# Swallow Beck: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, throughout Swallow Beck and the rest of Lincolnshire. The very first thing to do is not to fire up the motor. While your engine has not been started and the petrol is still in your tank, a drain is nearly always all it takes, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much got in.

Our technicians can explain what your next part is. Ring us — it comes before everything else.

## What now? Petrol in a diesel, in order

- Do not crank it — and do not depend on it if it does start. Here is the part people have wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor fed diesel normally just can't run, so the driver stops and the damage stops with them. A diesel fed petrol generally starts, idles and moves off just fine for a couple of miles. It's not fine. It is wearing out that fuel system while you drive.

- Turning the ignition on often primes the system, and priming is what draws petrol out of the tank and into the pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol manages the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the ignition off.

- Never tip diesel on top to thin it. A diesel fuel system does not handle petrol by percentage the way that guidance suggests, and topping up removes nothing — it only leaves you a bigger tank of the same mix. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.

- Stay still if it's safe to. Hazards on, motor off, keep the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Moorland Way, anywhere — a tricky spot for us is better than a started motor, and nothing is easier for us to deal with than a motor that never moved.

- Keep your whereabouts prepared before you ring. A postcode beginning LN6 7 and whatever is closest to you with a sign on it is the difference between our van turning up and a van circling.

- Three replies decide the whole job: the fuel you poured in, the approximate measure involved, and whether it has been turning since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

## On the forecourt: clearing petrol from the diesel

The job starts at the pump, mostly. Frequently the work ends there as well.

Still at Sainsbury's? Then that is generally where it takes place. Station forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the owner.

The forecourt is the one spot the mistake can be halted before the engine has started.

We can still deal with it where it sits, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the car has been started and moved there, and that drew fuel through the filter then into your high-pressure pump, all the way from the tank. None of that is a calamity, although the flush then has to go past the tank to your lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for your key are what decide that.

The attendants will normally happily push the vehicle out from the pump so the next customer can get by. It is worth doing.

Four car lengths is not worth a start.

Diesel Volkswagen Passat. Some litres of unleaded. Done a couple of miles. Turned off now, at The Food Warehouse. That is the enquiry our engineers want, because the real question under it's about quantity through the pump not hours on the clock.

## Parts we cover near Swallow Beck

Swallow Beck is a residential suburb, and our vans get out to it and to the areas by it on the usual trips: Boultham Moor, Hartsholme, Swanpool, Bracebridge and Boultham.

Not on the list? It tells you nothing. The names above are simply the nearest few, and nearly all places around Lincolnshire have a page of their own somewhere on our site.

Near a border, or anywhere the satnav misreads? Phone and ask instead of assuming.

Look at this map for the area included here.

Your vehicle never needs to travel to us. We operate across all of it — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Twenty to nine. At the gates of Hartsholme Academy. Late already, and the till receipt in your hand shows unleaded. Turn the hazard lights on, leave your motor alone, and phone us. You might think three miles is nothing, in your Skoda Octavia or anything else — except that fuel is supplied on demand, and a drive taken in a rush demands a great deal of it.

## Stuck by the kerbside anywhere in Swallow Beck?

Not everyone finds a sensible place to stop.

A normal call for us instead of an odd one: worked out after setting off, landed along the verge on Middlebrook Road or in a lay-by with the hazard lights on.

Whether you stay with your car or move clear of it turns on if staying there feels wise.

It will usually oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the catch: fire it up to reach somewhere safer and that blend goes further into the system with every mile driven.

However difficult the spot, it's no problem for us to get to it, and that is much better for the vehicle than pressing on.

It will fire up. It will drive off perfectly well. That is the issue, as a diesel on a diluted tank behaves generally while wearing down the parts its fuel should be lubricating. So no, do not risk the drive home from Crown & Arrows — leave the Nissan Qashqai then phone.

## Petrol in a diesel, and the car has moved

This is where the local Doncaster By-Pass comes in — under 25 miles from Swallow Beck.

Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a tidy stop. Power drains away, the idle gets uneven, and there may be some smoke.

Take the next junction that is safe, pull up there, and do not restart the car to reposition.

Presume the worst of it on a long drive. Anything close to the under 3 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through your filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Tell us when you call. What our technicians bring differs.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: the fuel has to hold pressure, not merely burn. Dilute that fuel and pressure which should build then stay built escapes past clearances instead, leaving the motor a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was built around. Petrol thins diesel, and diesel has to be thick enough to seal the precision parts it passes through — that's the whole process. It explains the normal Boutham Moor Wood call too: a diesel Ford Focus that drove out without fuss and came back down on power, lumpy at idle, maybe smoking a little. None of which is the engine failing, and that's the part worth hearing. Your fuel has stopped acting like diesel. Put your fuel right and it stops.

## Where's Swallow Beck?

Swallow Beck is a suburban area located on the outskirts of Lincoln, situated near the River Witham in Lincolnshire. Swallow Beck sits at a low elevation of around 13 metres, close to nearby places such as Boultham Moor and Hartsholme. Swallow Beck is characterized by its semi-detached housing and riverside setting, providing a residential community within walking distance of Lincoln city centre.

## Once we arrive with you around Swallow Beck: what we do

- Our engineers find out what was put in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The responses change the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting.

- Our engineers clear your tank of all the polluted mixture.

- Fuel lines are purged through and the fuel filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that caused any of this.

- New diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.

- It is started with new diesel in it, and our technicians check that it is running correctly.

From there, you are ready to drive away.

Our technicians do all of it wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been noticed early, it is very unusual for there to be long-term damage.

Rarely the problem, the place. On-street is the most common location our technicians work, and a tight parking bay is far preferable to a vehicle that has been driven somewhere more handy. What does help, when you ring from close to Starmers Pits, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether our van can park next to without blocking the road, and if anything has run since you filled up. Then the Peugeot 3008 gets cleared, the fuel filter changed where a serviceable one exists, the lines rinsed and fresh fuel put through the whole system — since by now the worst of it is in your lines, not the tank.

## Swallow Beck AdBlue removal is a different problem

The problem isn't the same, though the first rule is — do not crank it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Weakened diesel, and no protection left for the fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and build-up instead.

Often the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Swallow Beck page. Both are ours to handle.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Swallow Beck

Our engineers cannot put one figure on this page honestly, since the job is not one job. What shifts it:

- This is the main one: whether your motor has been run, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, set against how much the tank takes.

- Which got in: unleaded or AdBlue.

- Access: the car's position, and if working on it there's safe for a technician.

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the quantity, and if it has run.

Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is ideal for that.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Swallow Beck motorists

## At a petrol station in Swallow Beck, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes — forecourts are where a fair part of this happens.

Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Asda is somewhere we're often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear whether working there is possible.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

It hinges on the proportion instead of the litres, and much more on whether your motor has run.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is whether that blend has been drawn through the fuel system.

## I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Switch off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop.

Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of that tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable far more commonly than people fear.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out correctly, draining and rinsing is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a disagreement with one.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol weakened. No.

The pump still has to cope with it, as that tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the vehicle is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## You, and the vehicle, still together?

The motor remains off.

Switch it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold and parked, a motor is in the best place available — and people fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining in Swallow Beck and throughout Lincolnshire.
