# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Swanage?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, across Swanage and the remainder of Dorset. The very first thing to do is not to start the engine. When your engine has not yet turned over and the fuel is still sitting in the tank, a tank drain is almost always all it requires, and the next few minutes settle that, not how much was put in.

We shall tell you what the next step will be. Contact us — this happens before all else.

## What to try next about petrol in a diesel

- Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will usually not run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine for several miles. People have that backwards, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So don't fire it up. And having started, never believe it: that fuel system is wearing while you drive.

- Diesel combusts, and before it combusts it lubricates — that injection pump, the injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave the car's ignition off as well: flicking it on is frequently all it takes to prime your system, and priming pulls petrol from the tank into exactly those components.

- Never water down it. Diesel tipped on top clears nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The grade makes no difference.

- Stay still if it is wise to. Hazards on, motor off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Taunton Road, anywhere — a difficult spot for us trumps a started engine, and nothing is simpler for us to sort than a vehicle that never moved.

- Before you phone, work out your position. Anything nearest to you with a name on it, plus a postcode beginning BH19 2 — that is what settles whether our van turns up or circles.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Tell us what got in, approximately how many litres, and also if your car has run. Those three facts decide the full job.

How many miles you drove is what we query, not how long your car has been standing — and here is why. Diesel has two jobs on its way through the engine: it ignites, and before burning it greases that injection pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first only. So a hurried fill on the drive in, it dawning on you close to eleven, and a diesel Volkswagen Golf sitting outside Poole since quarter past eight tells us those couple of miles were covered with your pump running on a liquid stripped of a great deal of its protection. Ring us and leave it right where it stands.

## Clearing petrol from your diesel at the forecourt

Pumps are where the job usually begins, and where a big portion of that ends.

Still at Texaco? Then that's usually where it takes place. Garage forecourts are everyday for us, with the permission of the site.

Before the engine has run — a forecourt is the only place the mistake gets stopped.

The few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for your key determine how much needs flushing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from the tank, through your filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means the lines and the filter require rinsing as well as that tank. It is not a catastrophe, and we can still put it right where the car stands.

Push the car out of the way if the attendants volunteer, and they normally will. The next customer gets past the pump, and that is worth doing.

Firing it over four car lengths? Never.

## Will we serve your end of Swanage?

Being a coastal town, Swanage gets a regular visit, and the villages round about come along on that same journey: Durlston and Herston, New Swanage and Ulwell, Coombe.

Not on this list? That says nothing. The places above are simply the nearest few, and the majority of places in Dorset have a page of their own elsewhere on our site.

On the border, or somewhere your phone misreads? Ring us to enquire instead of assuming.

That map is the patch this page includes.

Kerbside, forecourt, driveway, car park: all of it is territory we work on, and none of it asks the vehicle to come to us.

## Kerbside stops around Swanage

Not everyone has the chance to pull over anywhere safe.

If you realised after setting off and finished up on the verge of High Street, or at a lay-by somewhere with your hazards flashing, that is a normal call for us instead of an unusual one.

Wait by the car when it's wise to sit inside, but out of the car if it isn't.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws that mixture further into your fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why your motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better.

Driving on causes the vehicle far more harm than a van heading out to an awkward location, and that is no bother for us.

Try the drive home from Ship Inn? Not a chance. It will start and it will drive off perfectly well, which is the issue — a diesel on a weakened tank behaves generally whilst wearing the parts your fuel should be protecting. Leave the Ford Focus then call us.

## Petrol in a diesel, but the motor has travelled

This is where your M27 matters, under 50 miles out of Swanage.

A loss of power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, rather than a tidy stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Never restart it to reposition. Pull off at the next sensible junction then turn off.

It alters what our technicians bring, and so tell us when you call: on a longer trip — anything near the under 50 miles to the nearest city — assume the petrol has been through your filter, the pump and the injectors.

Nothing gets worse whilst it waits. Whatever your diesel Dacia Duster did on the way to Sandpit Field, it's doing none of it now: your pump is not turning. So take your time — but don't drive the vehicle home to buy yourself any.

## Where's Swanage?

Swanage is a seaside town situated in the southeastern part of Dorset, nestled at the eastern tip of the Isle of Purbeck. The town is surrounded by notable landmarks, including the dramatic Ballard Down and Old Harry Rocks to the north, and the picturesque Durlston Bay to the south. Swanage is also close to the bustling Poole Harbour and the stunning natural beauty of Studland Bay. Its scenic location makes it a charming coastal destination.

## What happens when our engineers arrive with you in Swanage

- Three things get established before any price — the fuel that went in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer shapes the work.

- Out goes the contaminated fuel.

- Our engineers flush the fuel lines and clean your filter, and so what is remaining in your system is not what started the problem.

- We put clean diesel in and bleed the system.

- Our engineers turn it on and make sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.

From there, you are ready to drive away.

Long-term damage is very rare when it has been noticed early, and because everything is done where the car is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

## Swanage AdBlue removal is a separate matter

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening instruction is unchanged — the engine remains off — while the issue beneath it is a separate one altogether.

Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and takes away the lubrication your fuel system depends on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.

Both are ours. There's a separate Swanage page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Clattering, a ragged idle, white smoke, a throttle gone dead. That is a wrongly fuelled diesel BMW X1 telling you what is wrong. Switch off where you have stopped, near Swanage Library or anywhere else, and don't start it to find a better place.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Swanage

One number wouldn't be fair here, because this isn't one job. These are the things that move it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- The sort of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.

- Whether a van can safely get to your car and work on it, which depends on where the car is.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and whether the motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range.

For the vehicle at home that is going nowhere and is not urgent, is fine too.

Repaired and starting are not the same thing, and the difference is the circuit: our technicians flush it, and take the fuel filter off where there's a serviceable one. Compare that with the confident suggestion you'll get — drain the car, refill with fresh diesel. Half true. Do exactly that to a diesel Seat Leon near The Mowlem and it will start, which is exactly why the suggestion sounds sensible. Then your engine sucks the petrol left behind in the fuel filter, and in the feed lines, straight back through your pump, as draining a tank does nothing whatever about fuel that has already left it. Ring us instead.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Swanage motorists

## I'm on a forecourt around Swanage. Can you drain the car on the spot?

Yes — forecourts are where a good share of this gets done.

Our engineers attend BP and the other forecourts around town routinely, with the site's permission — tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Whether the engine has run matters much more, though the proportion matters too, rather than the litres.

What settles how much work is needed is whether that blend has been drawn through the system — since though five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?

Pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, then keep the vehicle off.

It's fixable far more often than people assume, even though driving is what moves the trouble from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now is not restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no modification at all.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another good reason to leave the vehicle switched off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a distinct problem and it doesn't put back what petrol has diluted.

The tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to live with it.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There is no need to take it to a franchised dealer, since our technicians drain and flush your car wherever it is.

## Still with the vehicle?

Turned off is how the car remains.

Turn it off somewhere safe and keep it off, if you have already driven it.

A still, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more commonly than people expect.

Across Dorset and around Swanage: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
