# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Swanwick? Don't Start It

Don't turn on the motor. While the petrol is still inside the tank and the motor has not yet turned over, a fuel drain is almost always all it requires — and that's settled in the following few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, throughout Swanwick and the remainder of Hampshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway.

Just one call to us is enough: our technicians can explain what follows next. Do that first.

## Your first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Whenever you drive, your pump and the fuel injectors wear down. That's why you don't start the vehicle, and why you never believe it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel in particular — the point drivers get wrong — is that it pulls away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine typically cannot run at all, which stops the person and stops the wear with them. This one lets you keep going.

- Leave the car's ignition alone as well. Diesel has two jobs: it ignites, and before it combusts it protects that high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol does the first and not the second. Turning your ignition on is frequently enough to prime the system, which carries that petrol out of that tank and into exactly those parts.

- Do not weaken it. Diesel tipped on top clears nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage is not how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The type makes no difference.

- Sit tight if it is sensible to. Hazards on, ignition off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Coal Park Lane, anywhere — a tricky spot for us is better than a started motor, and nothing is quicker for us to sort than a vehicle that never moved.

- Know where you are before ringing. A postcode beginning SO31 7, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of showing up.

- What went in, about how much, and also if the engine has started — those three replies determine the entire visit. Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Don't run it home. The drive in has already pushed a real volume of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure fuel pump of that Volkswagen Golf, and the drive back would close to double it for no gain at all. Call us from the platform if that's quicker. Our technicians do not need you standing over your car at Bursledon whilst our engineers get on, and we'd very much rather talk to you tonight than find out on Monday.

## Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

Most of the job starts at the pump, so a good share of that gets finished on site.

If you're still at the forecourt at Esso, that is normally where the drain happens — our technicians work on station forecourts regularly, with the station's permission.

Before your motor has started — a garage is the single location this is halted.

The few seconds between reading the receipt and going for the key determine how much needs flushing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from the tank, through your filter then into your high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the filter require cleaning as well as your tank. It is not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still deal with it where your car is.

Move it out of the way if the attendants offer, and they usually will. The next customer gets past the pump, and that's worth doing.

Shifting the car four spaces does not justify cranking it.

## Service around Swanwick

Swanwick is a coastal village, and our technicians are out to the town and to the places by it on the usual runs: Lower Swanwick, Sarisbury, Bursledon, Oak Hill and Lowford.

If yours isn't on the list that does not mean we never come — there are separate pages for most towns across Hampshire, and the ones listed above are just the immediate neighbours.

On a border, or somewhere your phone can't find? Phone to enquire instead of assuming.

Look at our map for the ground included here.

The vehicle never needs to come to us. We operate over the lot — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

## Stranded on the roadside somewhere in Swanwick?

Not everyone has the chance to pull in somewhere sensible.

A routine call for us instead of a rare one: worked out after setting off, landed by the verge of Bentham Way or in a lay-by with the hazards going.

Okay right there? Remain beside it. Not safe? Climb out and clear of it.

Do not start it up to reach a safer spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the mix deeper into the system.

However tricky the location, it is no trouble for us to come to it, and that's much better for the car than carrying on.

What we'll ask about is whether that drive there was brief and chilly, since that's where petrol is slowest to burn properly — and what doesn't burn can slip past the piston rings then into the engine oil. Right up to the moment someone drives it home, a diesel Peugeot 308 parked in the parking area outside The Ship carrying a tank full of petrol in it is an easy job. Nothing degrades while it stands, so park the vehicle there overnight then ring us in the morning.

## Petrol in a diesel, but the car has moved

under a mile from Swanwick, your M27 is what counts here.

Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will usually manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power ebbs away, the idle turns rough, and there may be smoke.

The next safe exit is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone.

On a longer drive — anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through your filter, your pump and your injectors, and tell us when you ring. It affects what we bring.

Stop somewhere safe, turn off and ring us. Fine on the way out to Swanwick Wood, gutless on the way back? Then look at the tank. Petrol dilutes diesel; runnier fuel slips past the precision components that build injection pressure; and the farther the diesel Nissan Qashqai travelled, the less of that pressure it held.

## A bit about Swanwick

Swanwick is a small village in Hampshire, situated on the coast near the mouth of the River Hamble. Swanwick sits at a low elevation of around 15 metres, close to the nearby villages of Lower Swanwick and Sarisbury. Swanwick is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock and remains a quiet residential community within commuting distance of Southampton. Swanwick is also relatively close to the major port city of Southampton, being only 5 miles away.

## The call-out in Swanwick, step by step

- We check what was put in, how much, and whether the motor has run. The answers alter the work, which is why we ask before pricing.

- Our technicians clear your tank of all the tainted mixture.

- Lines rinsed, filter cleaned. Whatever is left after that isn't the thing that created the problem.

- Clean diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.

- It is run with fresh diesel in it, and we confirm that it's running properly.

That leaves the car ready to pull away.

All of it is done where your car is, so it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been noticed soon, lasting damage is very unusual.

Pulled off the forecourt, read the receipt, and left the diesel Ford Focus up close to Bursledon Brickworks a couple of hundred yards later? That is about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Phone us then leave it off. The short drive genuinely helps, but it was still a start and a drive, so thinned fuel has arrived at the filter and the pump — which is why our engineers clean the fuel lines rather than only emptying the tank.

## Swanwick AdBlue removal is a different problem

The fault isn't the same, though the first instruction is — don't fire it up — if what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and residue in its place.

Both are ours. There's a separate Swanwick page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs around Swanwick

Honestly, no single figure belongs on a page like this. The job changes. Here is what changes it:

- Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the big one.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there safely?

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run.

For the vehicle at home that is going nowhere and is not time-critical, is fine too.

A couple of streets, then it stopped. Throttle limp, idle lumpy, and the diesel Audi A3 is parked up close to Sarisbury Community Centre. The engine is not giving up — that deadness is fuel that won't build pressure. There's no light on the dash for it, and so cars like yours generally get driven again before somebody picks up the phone. Don't. Off, then phone us.

## Things our technicians hear about petrol in diesel around Swanwick

## At a petrol station around Swanwick, can you do a fuel drain there?

A fair portion of this work takes place there, so yes.

Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Tesco is somewhere we're often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear whether working there is possible.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Ratio settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether the motor has run.

A nearly empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that mixture drawn through it.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the car. What now?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the issue out of that tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable far more commonly than drivers fear.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, emptying and rinsing is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

What is likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the engine to remain off.

## Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

What petrol has thinned isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a distinct fault. So no.

Your pump still has to put up with it, since that tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

You don't need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a dealership.

## Waiting next to it?

Never switch your engine back on.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting it after that.

Cold and still, a vehicle is in the best place available — and drivers fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.

Clearing misfuelled motors, Swanwick and the rest of Hampshire, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
