# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Swillington

If you have not started the engine as yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing more is almost always what a motor needs while the petrol is still in the tank and the motor has not been started, which is why it is the following few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the car wherever it has stopped in Swillington or the rest of West Yorkshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, and drains and cleans it there.

Ring us and then we can tell you what happens after that before you try much else.

## What to do first about petrol in a diesel

- Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will normally refuse to run at all, so the person stops there and so does the damage. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine for a few miles. Motorists have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't fire it up. And having started, do not trust it: that fuel system is grinding as you drive.

- Leave the car's ignition alone as well. Diesel performs two jobs: it combusts, and before it ignites it greases that high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Turning the ignition on is usually sufficient to prime the system, which draws that petrol out of that tank then into precisely those components.

- Topping up clears nothing. It leaves you a larger tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system will not handle petrol by percentage in the way that guidance assumes — so don't put diesel on top to weaken it. Grade is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.

- A car that hasn't shifted is the quickest one to handle, and so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on Astley Lane? Hazards on, and leave the vehicle there. An odd location suits us better than a started diesel.

- Before you call, get your whereabouts. Anything next to you with a label on it, plus a postcode starting LS26 8 — that's what decides whether our van shows up or circles.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Tell us what was put in, approximately how much, plus whether your car has started. Those three replies determine the full visit.

The trip back would more or less double it, for no reason at all. One commute has already put a real quantity of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure fuel pump of your Volkswagen Golf. So leave the car where it is. Ring us from the platform if that is handier — nobody needs you hovering over the car outside Woodlesford whilst our engineers work, and tonight is better than finding out on Monday.

## On the forecourt: clearing petrol from the diesel

Pumps are where the job mostly begins, and where a fair share of it finishes.

We operate on station forecourts routinely, with the site's consent, so if you are still at Esso that's typically where the drain gets done.

A filling station is the single place it is caught before the engine has fired.

The few seconds between reading your receipt and reaching for the key determine how much requires flushing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from your tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means your lines and the fuel filter require cleaning as well as the tank. It is not a calamity, and our engineers can still deal with it where the car sits.

Push it out of the way if the attendants volunteer, and they usually will. The next driver gets by the pump, and that's worth doing.

Four vehicle lengths is not worth a restart.

Petrol in the Renault Megane, and it takes diesel? Shopping in the boot, you outside Co-op Food, somewhere around Swillington? Then phone, and leave the engine out of that — not even to leave that spot. Someone gets to you. Tank drained, fuel lines flushed, clean diesel in, and home you go. Gentle throttle over a mile pulls hardly anything, so these are usually the simple jobs.

## Service in Swillington

Little Preston, Hollinthorpe, Swillington Common, Great Preston, Newsam Green — each of these on our journeys that take us out to Swillington as well, a village.

If yours is not on the list it doesn't mean we do not come — there are pages for most places in West Yorkshire, and the ones named above are just the nearest neighbours.

Assuming is the mistake to skip, above all on a border or somewhere a satnav gets lost. Ring us to check.

The ground this page covers appears on this map.

Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: the lot is ground we cover, and none of it needs the car to come to us.

## Swillington: stuck wherever you parked

Some people get no suitable spot to stop whatsoever.

A normal call for us and not an odd one: worked out after setting off, finished up along the verge of Church Lane or at a lay-by with the hazard lights flashing.

Safe there? Stay by it. Not safe? Move out and clear of it.

Never start it up to reach a nicer location. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging draws that mixture deeper into your fuel system.

We will bring the van to an awkward location without any trouble, and for the car that is a lot better than pressing on.

This is what a job in the car park at Swillington Miners Welfare Club and Institute usually looks like. We reach your car, ask what was put in, approximately how much, and whether the engine has run since — those three answers decide much of the work. Then the tainted mix comes out of that tank, the fuel lines get rinsed, and the fuel filter comes off where your Ford Focus has a serviceable one. New diesel goes in and the fuel system is primed. Then our technicians start the car, check it runs properly, and you set off.

## Already run it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles

under a mile out of Swillington, your M1 is what matters here.

A drop in power, a lumpy idle, smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, instead of a tidy stop — and a misfuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Get off at the first safe exit, switch off, and never start the vehicle to reposition.

Long trip? Anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the petrol. Say that on the call, because it changes what goes in our van.

## Swillington itself

Swillington is a village in West Yorkshire, situated on the banks of the River Aire at an elevation of around 61 metres. Swillington lies close to the city of Leeds, approximately 5.9 miles to the east, and is surrounded by nearby places such as Little Preston and Hollinthorpe. Swillington has a mix of housing types, with semi-detached homes being particularly prevalent. Swillington is located about 165.3 miles north of London, in the Yorkshire and the Humber region.

## What we do when our engineers get to you in Swillington

- The replies alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing: what was put in, how much of that, and if your motor has run.

- Your tank is emptied completely.

- Fuel lines are flushed through and your filter cleared, leaving nothing in your system that started any of this.

- Clean diesel goes in, and then your system gets primed.

- We turn it on and check it runs correctly on clean diesel.

That leaves it ready to set off.

Our technicians do all of it wherever your car has come to a stop, which means it never has to be taken to a garage, and if it has been noticed soon, it is very uncommon for there to be permanent damage.

The pump rests before the injectors, and so whatever a wearing one sheds travels on with your fuel — which is why we're direct about not driving on. Ring us, and leave your diesel Audi Q5 where it's close to St Mary's Church.

## A distinct job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Swillington

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first rule is unchanged — your motor remains off — while the issue underneath it is a distinct one altogether.

The protection a fuel system relies on gets taken away by petrol, which dilutes the diesel.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus residue.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Swillington page. Both are ours to deal with.

## Swillington prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

What shifts the price is listed below, because the job isn't one job and our engineers cannot truthfully put a single number on this page.

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- The type of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there is safe for a van.

A firm answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the quantity, and if it has run.

Not pressing, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

By this point your tank isn't where most of the trouble is. Once a diesel has run, the mix is in your filter, your lines, the pump and the rail — and it doesn't come back out with your tank contents. A diesel Mercedes GLC that got by Great & Little Preston Village Hall needs the system purged, not emptied.

## Things our engineers hear about petrol in diesel in Swillington

## I'm on a forecourt around Swillington. Can you drain the vehicle here?

A fair portion of this work happens there, so yes.

Our engineers work at Oakdale Garage and the other forecourts nearby all the time, with the site's permission — tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there.

## Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

It hinges on the ratio instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether your motor has run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that mixture pulled through it.

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What now?

Pull in somewhere safe, switch off, and keep the car off.

Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does shift the trouble out of that tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable a lot more often than motorists fear.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no modification at all.

Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a distinct problem and it does not restore what petrol has thinned.

Your pump still has to put up with it, since the tank still has petrol in it after that.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever the vehicle is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## Still with your vehicle?

Keep it switched off.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull in somewhere safe, turn it off then keep it off.

A still, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from much more often than drivers expect.

On-site fuel draining in Swillington and across West Yorkshire — at the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home.
