# Swiss Valley: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, throughout Swiss Valley and the remainder of Carmarthenshire. The first thing to do is not to turn on the engine. When your engine has not yet been started and the petrol is still inside that tank, a drain is nearly always all it requires, and the coming few minutes settle that, not how much was put in.

Just one ring to us is plenty: our team will show you what happens from here. Make it first.

## The first five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Never start it — and don't rely on it if it runs. That is the part people get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor given diesel usually just cannot run, so the person stops and the damage stops with them. A diesel fed petrol usually starts, ticks over and moves off perfectly well for a few miles. It isn't all right. It's eating into your fuel system while you drive.

- Diesel burns, and before it ignites it greases — that high-pressure pump, its injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the ignition alone as well: flicking it on is often enough to prime that system, and priming pulls petrol from that tank into precisely those components.

- That advice presumes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It won't. Add diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you end with is a fuller tank of the same blend. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.

- Stay where you are if you reasonably can. A motor that has not moved is the quickest one to sort, and our team would much rather get to a tricky place than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Pen-nant, put the hazards on and keep the vehicle there.

- Check where you are before phoning. A postcode beginning SA14 8, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than showing up.

- Phone 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three things — what got in, approximately how much, and whether your car has been run. Those answers settle whatever happens next.

## Can petrol be drained out of your diesel at a forecourt?

Plenty of the work begins at the pump, meaning a large share of that gets done there.

The drain normally happens right there. Still on the forecourt at Shell? Given the station's agreement, that is a spot our technicians work, and routinely.

Nowhere else other than a garage can the mistake be halted with your engine still unstarted.

Our technicians can still sort it out where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the car has been fired up and driven there, and that pulled fuel through your filter then into your high-pressure pump, right from your tank. None of that is a calamity, though the flush then has to reach past your tank to the lines and your filter, and the few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for the key are what settle that.

The staff will normally happily wheel the vehicle clear of the petrol pump so the next customer can get past. It is worth doing.

Four car lengths is not worth a start.

## Swiss Valley plus the places next to it

Being a residential suburb, Swiss Valley gets a regular visit, while its neighbours nearby go along on that same trip: Felinfoel and Dafen, Llanerch and Pemberton, Tyrfran.

Not on this list? That says nothing. The names above are only the nearest few, and most locations around Carmarthenshire have a page of their own elsewhere on this site.

Near a border, or anywhere your satnav gets wrong? Phone to check instead of assuming.

That map is the area the page spans.

Our technicians work at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of it, and the car doesn't need to move to us.

Each restart primes your lines and draws more petrol past the filter and into the pump. So a misfilled diesel Ford Focus on the zig-zags at the local primary school is an inconvenience, whereas the same car fired up three more times to be courteous is a fuel system and not a tank. A passer-by will advise you to move it out of the gateway and fix it later. Please don't. Leave it there, let them moan, and call us.

## Swiss Valley: stranded where you stopped

Not everyone has a suitable place to pull over.

Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge on Blean Nant as you worked it out after setting off — we take that call so often that it is the usual kind.

Sit by your car when it is sensible to sit there, and out of the car when it's not.

Don't start it up to reach a nicer spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls the blend deeper into your fuel system.

Carrying on does your car far more harm than a van heading out to an inconvenient spot, and that's no bother for us.

## Already run it? Petrol in a diesel after a few miles

Your M4 is the one which matters here, and it sits under 3 miles from Swiss Valley.

Lost power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, rather than a tidy stop — and a misfuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

The next safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone.

It affects what we bring, so say so when you call: on a longer run — anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the fuel injectors.

Your pump is not turning, and so whatever the diesel Audi A3 did on the way to Penygaer Playing Fields, none of it is happening now. Nothing gets worse whilst it waits. Take your time over this — but don't drive it home to buy any.

## A bit about Swiss Valley

Swiss Valley is a suburban area in Carmarthenshire, situated near the coast and approximately 9.9 miles from Swansea. Swiss Valley has a relatively low elevation of 38 metres and is characterised by detached housing. Swiss Valley is close to nearby places such as Felinfoel, Dafen, and Llanerch, and is part of the wider Swansea urban area.

## What our technicians do when we reach you in Swiss Valley

- Our engineers establish what was put in, how much, and if your motor has run. The responses shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting.

- The tank gets emptied completely.

- Lines flushed, filter cleared. Whatever remains later isn't the thing that started the problem.

- Clean diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.

- It is fired up with clean diesel in it, and our technicians check that it's running smoothly.

From there, you're ready to pull away.

Lasting damage is very unusual when it has been caught quickly, and as all of this is done where your car is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

Seldom the trouble, the spot. On-street is the most common location our technicians work, and a cramped parking space is far preferable to a vehicle that has been driven somewhere more handy. What does help, when you phone from near Swiss Valley Community Hall, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a technician can stand beside without blocking the road, and if anything has run since you filled up. Then the BMW 5 Series gets drained, the fuel filter changed where a usable one exists, the lines purged and fresh fuel put through the entire system — because by now the worst of it is in the fuel lines, not your tank.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, in Swiss Valley?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — the engine remains off — whereas the issue under it is a separate one altogether.

The lubrication a fuel system depends on gets stripped away by petrol, which dilutes the diesel.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to corrosion and residue instead.

Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Swiss Valley page. Both are ours to handle.

Most of these happen somewhere unfamiliar, and the cause is mechanical rather than slapdash — almost no resistance meets a smaller petrol nozzle entering a modern diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Peugeot 208, a fill-up close to Phil Bennet Statue that you didn't think about? Ring us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anyone notices it, and the further they go, the more petrol winds up at your injectors.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Swiss Valley?

Honestly, no single number fits on a page like this. The job differs. Here is what varies it:

- This is the big one: whether your motor has been run, or driven.

- Wrong fuel in, against what your tank holds — that ratio.

- The sort of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.

- Where the vehicle is, and whether our van can sensibly reach and work on it.

Tell us what the vehicle is, how much went in, and whether the motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range.

Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is good for that.

The filter, your lines, your pump and its rail: that is where that mix is once a diesel has run, and it does not come back out with your tank contents. So the tank isn't where most of the problem sits by this point, and a diesel Kia Sportage that got close to Felinfoel Baptistery needs your circuit cleared instead of cleared.

## Things we hear about petrol in diesel in Swiss Valley

## I am on a forecourt in Swiss Valley. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?

Yes — forecourts are where a good part of this takes place.

Often, provided the site consents: Texaco, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether we can work in that location is something our engineers answer there and then.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It hinges on the ratio rather than the litres, and far more on whether your motor has run.

Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that decides how much work is needed is if that blend has been sucked through your fuel system.

## I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the problem out of the tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains fixable a lot more commonly than motorists expect.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty outlasts a drain and flush done to a correct standard, which is no change at all.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another good reason to leave the car turned off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has thinned isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a separate fault. So no.

Petrol stays in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

There is no need to take it to a main dealer, as we drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is.

## Is your car still with you?

Keep the engine shut off.

Turn it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it.

This is recoverable from much more frequently than motorists assume, and a stationary, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.

On-site fuel draining around Swiss Valley and across Carmarthenshire — at the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home.
