# Syke: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, all over Syke and the remainder of Greater Manchester. The first thing to do is not to start the motor. While the engine has not turned over and the petrol is still inside that tank, a drain is nearly always all it needs, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much went in.

Our team will explain what your next move is. Ring us — that comes ahead of everything else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do next

- While you drive, your pump and your injectors wear down. That is why you never crank it, and why you don't rely on it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel in particular — the point motorists get wrong — is that it drives away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor generally won't run at all, which stops the person and stops the wear with them. This one lets you keep going.

- Leave the car's ignition off as well. Diesel has two tasks: it burns, and before it combusts it protects that high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Turning the car's ignition on is usually enough to prime the system, which pulls the petrol out of that tank and into precisely those components.

- Topping up clears nothing. It gives you a bigger tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system doesn't accept petrol by percentage as that advice assumes — so do not pour diesel on top to dilute it. Grade is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.

- A motor that hasn't moved is the quickest one to handle, so wait where you are if you reasonably can. Parked on the verge on Dewhirst Road? Hazards on, then keep the vehicle there. A tricky place works for us better than a started motor.

- Get your whereabouts prepared before you phone. A postcode beginning OL12 9 and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it is the difference between a van turning up and the van circling.

- Three facts decide the full call-out: the liquid you poured in, the rough quantity involved, plus whether it has been running since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

Phone us before you drive the car. Petrol into a diesel Renault Clio this morning, and the vehicle at Smithy Bridge ever since? Then the wait has taken nothing from you: fuel in a tank is idle, and any harm happened on the journey in, when your pump was drawing diesel that petrol had diluted.

## Can petrol be drained from your diesel on a forecourt?

A good part of this work ends up done at a pump, as that's where it mostly kicks off.

Still at Texaco? Then that is typically where it takes place. Station forecourts are routine for us, with the permission of the site.

At a forecourt, it gets halted with your engine never run, and nowhere else manages it.

Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from the tank, through the filter and into your high-pressure pump. That's not a catastrophe, and our technicians can still deal with it where it sits. It does mean the lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as your tank, and that's determined by the few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for your key.

The attendants will usually help you move it clear of the pump so the next customer can get through. That's worth doing.

Cranking it for four car lengths? No.

## Will our engineers reach your side of Syke?

Being a residential suburb, Syke sees a regular call, and the areas close by go along on that same run: Nar and Lower Healey, Middle Healey and Buckley, Great Howarth.

We still come. The names above are only the closest neighbours, and a page is there for most places around Greater Manchester, and so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage.

Phone to ask instead of assuming, above all when you're on a border or somewhere your phone gets wrong.

That map marks the patch the page includes.

The vehicle doesn't need to come to us. Our technicians work across all of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

You will be told to move it clear of that gateway and deal with it later. Don't. On the zig-zags by Healey Foundation Primary School, a misfilled BMW 3 Series running on diesel is in the way, and that is all it is. Crank it three more times being courteous and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the fuel lines, every prime pulls more petrol through the filter towards your pump. Let them grumble. Call us.

## Syke: broken down where you stopped

Not everybody gets a chance to stop somewhere safe.

A routine call for us rather than an unusual one: noticed after setting off, ended up on the verge beside Ring Lows Lane or in a lay-by with your hazards on.

Clear of the vehicle while it isn't safe to sit in it, by it if it is.

It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the catch: fire it up to get to somewhere better and that mixture goes further into your fuel system with every mile driven.

Our van heading to a difficult location is no trouble for us, and it's a lot better for the vehicle than driving on.

Easy job, this one — until somebody drives it home. A diesel Peugeot 308 parked outside Hunter's Rest with petrol in the tank loses nothing by sitting there overnight, so leave the vehicle then call us once it is light. Expect a question about the trip there, though. Brief and cold is precisely where petrol struggles to burn, and what won't burn can work past the rings and into the oil.

## Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

Here is where the A627(M) counts, under 3 miles away from Syke.

A misfuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the symptoms when they arrive are normally a drop in power, a rough idle and some smoke rather than a tidy stop.

Pull off at the next sensible junction, turn off, and do not restart the vehicle to reposition.

Long run? Anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it arrived at by the contamination. Say that on the call, as it alters what goes in the van.

## A little about Syke

Syke is a suburban area in Greater Manchester, situated near several lakes and surrounded by other local places such as Nar, Lower Healey, and Middle Healey. Syke sits at an elevation of 194 metres, approximately 11.6 miles from Manchester, and features predominantly semi-detached housing. Syke is part of the larger North West region, about 170.1 miles from London.

## When we reach you in Syke: what happens

- The answers change the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing: what went in, how much of it, and if your engine has run.

- Our engineers empty the tank of the contaminated fuel.

- Lines purged, filter cleared. Whatever remains later isn't the thing that created the problem.

- Our technicians put new diesel in and prime the system.

- Our technicians fire it up and confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

Then it's ready to drive away.

Our technicians do all of it wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never needs to be taken to a garage, and when it has been noticed soon, it is very uncommon for there to be long-term damage.

## Syke AdBlue removal is a separate problem

Do not fire it up: that first rule holds whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What changes is the fault itself.

Petrol dilutes the diesel and strips the lubrication the fuel system depends on.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to corrosion and residue instead.

Both are ours. There's a separate Syke page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Authorisation first, where there is a hire firm or a company behind your car — some agreements require it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, phone us about the diesel Dacia Duster close to Christ Church. You will not know how full the tank was. Hardly anyone does, two days into a vehicle, and it gets worked out on the spot regardless. Our technicians ask since the harm petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a couple of litres in an almost empty tank make a much stronger blend than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is built to resist igniting under pressure, which is exactly what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more your engine knocks and smokes and flattens off.

## Syke pricing for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

What moves the price is laid out below, because this job is not one job and our technicians cannot truthfully put a single price on this page.

- This is the key one: whether your engine has been run, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, weighed against how much that tank takes.

- Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Access: the vehicle's position, and if working on it there is sensible for a van.

Tell us your vehicle, the quantity and whether it has run, and you will get a clear answer instead of a range.

Not pressing, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then works.

What happens next is the issue. Your engine at once sucks the petrol left waiting in the fuel filter and the feed lines back round through the pump a second time, as draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it then put fresh diesel in, a person confident will tell you — and that suggestion is only half right, since do it to a diesel Ford Fiesta parked up, Wardle War Memorial say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound plausible. Phone us instead. Our engineers flush the circuit and take the fuel filter off where your vehicle has a working one, and that's the difference between the vehicle being put right and your car merely starting.

## Syke drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Fuel drains on a Syke petrol station forecourt

A fair part of this work takes place there, so yes.

Routinely, provided the site consents: Shell, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that location is something our technicians answer straight away.

## Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

It depends on the proportion instead of the litres, and far more on whether your motor has run.

What settles how much work is required is if that mix has been drawn through your fuel system — because even though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different case from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of your tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable far more frequently than motorists expect.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain then flush done to a good standard, which is no alteration at all.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one, which is another good reason to leave it turned off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No.

Your pump still has to cope with it, since the tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever your car is, our engineers drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## Is your car still with you?

Don't turn it back on.

If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere sensible, turn it off and leave it off.

A parked, cold car is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more often than people assume.

Across Greater Manchester and in Syke: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
