# Tadley Hill: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Don't fire up your engine. If the fuel is still sitting in that tank and the engine has not turned over, a fuel drain is almost always all it needs — and that gets determined in the coming few minutes, not by how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they sit, across Tadley Hill and the rest of Hampshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway.

Our team can show you what the following move will be. Ring us — that goes before anything else.

## The next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Do not start the vehicle — and never believe it when it does start. Here is the thing motorists get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor given diesel generally just won't run, and so the motorist stops and the harm stops with them. A diesel given petrol typically starts, ticks over and drives away without complaint for several miles. It's not all right. It is wearing out that fuel system whenever you drive.

- Diesel ignites, and before it combusts it protects — that high-pressure pump, its injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the ignition alone also: switching it on is frequently all it takes to prime the system, and priming carries petrol from the tank into just those components.

- Never put diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system won't cope with petrol by percentage as that guidance assumes, and topping up takes out nothing — it just gives you a bigger tank of the same mixture. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.

- A motor that has never shifted is the quickest one to sort, and so wait where you are if you safely can. Pulled up on the verge on The Green? Hazards on, and leave the car there. An odd place suits us better than a started engine.

- Get your location ready before you phone. A postcode that starts RG26 3 and whatever is closest to you with a name on it is the difference between the van arriving and our van circling.

- Three facts decide the full visit: the liquid you put in, the rough measure involved, plus if anything has been running since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

## On the forecourt: removing petrol from the diesel

A big part of this work ends up done at a forecourt, as that's where it often kicks off.

If you're still at the forecourt at Esso, that's normally where the drain happens — we work on station forecourts all the time, with the station's agreement.

At a forecourt, it is caught with the engine never run, and nowhere else does that.

The few seconds between reading the till receipt and reaching for the keys determine how much needs rinsing. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was started and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means the lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as the tank. It is not a disaster, and we can still deal with it where the vehicle sits.

Wheel it out of the way if the staff suggest it, and they generally will. The next driver gets through the petrol pump, and that's worth doing.

Cranking the car just to shift four car lengths isn't.

Tell us this much and we can work with it: a diesel BMW 3 Series, a few litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, shut off outside Sainsbury's now. Time passed is not the thing our engineers need. Fuel drawn by your pump is.

## Coverage around Tadley Hill

Those same runs get us to Tadley Bottom, Pamber Green, Court Corner, Tadley and Pamber Heath as well as Tadley Hill, which is a residential suburb.

Not on that list? That means nothing. The names above are only the nearest few, and most places around Hampshire have a page of their own somewhere on our site.

Presuming is the mistake to skip, especially on the boundary or anywhere your satnav goes wrong. Call us and check.

The patch the page covers appears on this map.

Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: all of that is territory we cover, and none of that requires your vehicle to travel to us.

Every restart primes the fuel lines and pulls more petrol through the fuel filter and into your pump. So a misfilled diesel Nissan Qashqai on the zig-zags outside Tadley Community Primary School is a hassle, whereas the same motor fired up three more times to be polite is a fuel system and not a tank. A passer-by will tell you to shift the vehicle out of that gateway and sort it out later. Don't. Leave it there, let everyone moan, and call us.

## Tadley Hill: stranded where you parked

Not everyone finds a sensible place to stop.

Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge on Ward Place as you realised after setting off — we take that call so often that it is the usual kind.

Whether you sit by the vehicle or step clear of it depends on whether being in it looks wise.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws the mix further into your fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why the motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere safer.

We will send our van to a tricky location without any trouble, and for your car that is a lot better than carrying on.

Risk the trip home from The New Inn? Not a chance. It will fire up and it will move off quite happily, which is the problem — a diesel on a weakened tank acts usually while grinding the parts your fuel should be lubricating. Leave the Audi A4 then ring us.

## Petrol in a diesel, and the car has rolled

under 10 miles out of Tadley Hill, the local M3 is what matters here.

A wrongly fuelled diesel will often take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, while the symptoms when they arrive are usually a loss of power, an uneven idle and some smoke rather than a clean stop.

The first sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone.

Long drive? Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the contamination. Say that on the call, since it affects what goes in the van.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: your fuel has to hold pressure, not merely burn. Dilute that fuel and pressure which should build then stay built leaks past clearances instead, leaving the engine a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was designed about. Petrol dilutes diesel, and diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the close-fitting components it passes through — that's the full process. It accounts for the ordinary The Green call too: a diesel Ford Focus that drove out without complaint and came back down on power, uneven at idle, perhaps smoking a little. None of which is the engine failing, and that is the bit worth hearing. The fuel has stopped behaving like diesel. Put the fuel right and it stops.

## What our engineers do when our engineers reach you around Tadley Hill

- Three things get established before any price — the fuel that got in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.

- The polluted mixture is drawn from the tank.

- Fuel lines are cleaned through and your filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that created any of this.

- New diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets primed.

- Our technicians fire it up and confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

At that point it's ready to pull away.

Everything is done where your car is, so it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been spotted early, long-term damage is very rare.

About as well as this goes, once your engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and your diesel Mercedes E-Class left near War Memorial scarcely two streets on. Phone us, then leave the vehicle off. A short drive does truly help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, and so the fuel filter and the pump have had weakened fuel through them — hence rinsing the fuel lines rather than only draining that tank.

## A distinct matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Tadley Hill

Do not crank it: that first rule holds whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is the problem itself.

Petrol weakens the diesel and removes the lubrication the system relies on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.

Both are ours. There's a separate Tadley Hill page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Tadley Hill

One number would not be fair here, because this is not one job. These are the things that change it:

- This is the main one: whether your engine has been run, or driven.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- Which was put in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Access: the car's position, and if working on it there is sensible for a van.

Tell us the vehicle, the quantity and if it has run, and you'll get a clear answer instead of a range.

If it's not urgent — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

## Questions our technicians get about petrol in diesel around Tadley Hill

## I'm on a forecourt around Tadley Hill. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?

Plenty of what we do happens nowhere else. So yes.

Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you whether we can work there. With the station's agreement we attend Shell and the other forecourts around town all the time.

## Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Proportion decides it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run.

What decides how much work is required is whether that mixture has been pulled through the system — since though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one, either way that is the query.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What next?

Turn off somewhere safe, then keep it that way after you stop.

It's fixable far more often than people assume, even though driving is what takes the trouble from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no change at all.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another good reason to leave the car switched off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a distinct fault and it does not put back what petrol has thinned.

After that? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the vehicle is, our engineers drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## You, and the car, still together?

Turned off is how the car stays.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere safe, switch off, then let it remain that way.

Cold and parked, a vehicle is in the best place available — and drivers fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

Across Hampshire and around Tadley Hill: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
