# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Tandem

If you have not fired up the motor as yet, do not. A drain and nothing more is nearly always what a vehicle requires while the petrol is still inside that tank and the motor has not yet run, which is why it's the next few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the car wherever it has come to rest in Tandem or the remainder of West Yorkshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there.

Just one call to us is sufficient: our team shall tell you what happens after this. Try that straight away.

## What to try first about petrol in a diesel

- Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will normally refuse to run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the wear. Feed a diesel petrol and the thing starts, it idles, it moves off — fine for several miles. Motorists have that backwards, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't start the car. And if started, don't trust it: your fuel system is grinding while you drive.

- Two jobs, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure fuel pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only handles the one. That is why your ignition is left off too — flick it on and you usually prime the system, and that is petrol leaving the tank for just those parts.

- That guidance presumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It will not. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you have is a fuller tank of the same blend. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.

- Sit tight if it is wise to. Hazards on, motor off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Penistone Road, anywhere — a difficult location for us trumps a started diesel, and nothing is easier for us to sort out than a vehicle that never shifted.

- Check where you are before phoning. A postcode starting HD5 8, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than showing up.

- Three details settle your whole call-out: the fuel you put in, the rough amount involved, and if anything has been running since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

## Can petrol be drained from a diesel on the forecourt?

Much of the work begins at a pump, so a large part of it is completed on site.

Our technicians work on station forecourts regularly, with the owner's agreement, and so if you're still at Morrisons that is generally where the drain gets done.

Before the engine has run — a forecourt is the single location this ends up halted.

Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from your tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a calamity, and our engineers can still put it right where it is. It does mean your lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as your tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between checking the till receipt and reaching for your key.

Push the car out of the way if the staff offer, and they usually will. The next customer gets through the petrol pump, and that is worth doing.

Starting the car just for four car lengths? Not a chance.

If you've put petrol in the diesel Renault Clio around Tandem and you're now stuck at Aldi with a boot loaded with shopping, call us. Don't start the car a second time to exit that space. Our technicians will head your way, drain that tank, clean your fuel lines then put clean diesel in so you can drive away. A mile or so at light throttle draws little of it, which is why these are often the easy ones.

## Coverage in Tandem

The same journeys take us to Waterloo, Cowmes, Greenside, Dalton and Gawthorpe as well as Tandem, which is a small village.

If yours is not on this list it does not mean we do not come — there are separate pages for most places around West Yorkshire, and the ones named above are just the closest neighbours.

Phone and enquire rather than guessing — county lines above all, and wherever a satnav can get wrong.

That map shows the area this page includes.

Our technicians work at the roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of it, and the vehicle does not need to come to us.

Somebody will tell you to shift the car out of the gateway and fix it later. Don't. A wrongly fuelled diesel Audi A4 on the zig-zags at Dalton School is an inconvenience; the same motor started three more times to be polite is a fuel system and not a tank. Each restart primes the fuel lines and drags more petrol past your filter then into your pump. Stay put, let them complain, then call us.

## Kerbside stops across Tandem

Not everyone gets the chance to pull over somewhere sensible.

If you realised after setting off and finished up along the verge of Wakefield Road, or in a lay-by somewhere with your hazards flashing, that's a normal call for us and not an unusual one.

Fine right there? Remain with it. Not okay? Move out and away from it.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the mix further into your fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why your engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere handier.

We will send the van to an awkward location without any fuss, and for the vehicle that is much better than carrying on.

A diesel Mercedes C-Class in the parking area by Waterloo Tavern carrying a tank full of petrol in it is a straightforward job, right up till someone takes it home. Park the car there overnight then phone us next morning. Nothing deteriorates while it waits. What our technicians will ask about is if the run there was brief and cold, since that's where petrol is slowest to burn fully — and whatever won't burn can get past the piston rings and into the oil.

## A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

under 5 miles out of Tandem, your M62 is what counts now.

A loss of power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, rather than a clean stop — and a misfuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Get off at the next sensible exit, switch off, and don't start it to move it.

On a longer drive — anything close to the under 15 miles to the closest city — take it the contamination has been through your filter, the pump and the injectors, and tell us when you phone. It affects what our engineers bring.

## Where is Tandem?

Tandem is a locality in West Yorkshire, situated on the riverside at an elevation of 78 metres, with semi-detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation. Tandem lies approximately 10 miles from Bradford and is close to nearby places such as Waterloo, Cowmes, and Greenside. Tandem is part of the larger urban area surrounding Bradford, with the city's amenities and services within easy reach. Tandem has a population of around 4081 residents, according to approximate estimates.

## Once we reach you around Tandem: what we do

- Our technicians establish what got in, how much, and whether your engine has run. The responses change the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price.

- Our technicians drain the tank of the polluted mixture.

- We rinse your fuel lines and clear your filter, and so what's left in your system isn't what caused the issue.

- Bleeding your system follows, once fresh diesel is in.

- The motor is started and tested to make sure it runs correctly on clean diesel.

The vehicle is then ready for you to drive away.

There is no need to go to a garage at any stage, because the work is all done where the car is, and when it's noticed quickly, lasting damage is very rare.

## Tandem AdBlue removal is a different problem

If what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first rule is unchanged — don't fire it up — yet the problem is not.

Thinned diesel, and no protection left for the fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

AdBlue removal around Tandem has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it is usually the more significant of the two. Our engineers handle both.

A throttle gone soft, white smoke, a ragged idle, clattering: that is a misfilled diesel Citroen C3 telling you what's wrong. Don't restart the vehicle to find a better place — switch off where you have stopped, near St Michael & St Helen or anywhere else.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Tandem

One price wouldn't be fair here, because this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, weighed against how much the tank takes.

- Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.

- Whether a technician can safely reach the vehicle and work on it, which depends on where the car is.

Tell us what your car is, how much got in, and whether the engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range.

For the vehicle at home that is going nowhere and isn't pressing, is fine too.

No dashboard light exists for this, which is why motors in that position typically get driven again before anybody phones. Please don't be one of them. The throttle went limp and your idle turned lumpy after a couple of streets, and your diesel Hyundai Tucson is now waiting near Greenfields Family Centre. Softness there means fuel that can't build pressure properly instead of an engine giving up. Switch off. Call us.

## Things we get about petrol in diesel in Tandem

## I am on a forecourt in Tandem. Can you drain the car on the spot?

A good share of this work happens there, so yes.

We attend Esso and the other forecourts around town regularly, with the station's permission — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you if our engineers can work there.

## Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Litres are not the measure. Ratio is, and far more than either, it matters whether anything has been run.

Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been drawn right through, or has it not?

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and leave it off.

Driving shifts the issue along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly valuable thing left to you isn't restarting it.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out correctly isn't a change and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

## Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a distinct problem from a bygone era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind puts back.

The tank still has petrol in it after that, and your pump still has to live with it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — needed?

Wherever your car is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## Still with the vehicle?

Turned off is how it stays.

Switch it off somewhere sensible then leave it off, if you have already driven it.

This is recoverable from much more frequently than drivers assume, and a parked, cold car is the best place to be in.

Throughout West Yorkshire and around Tandem: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
