# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Tarpots?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, across Tarpots and the remainder of Essex. The very first thing to do is not to start the engine. While the engine has not yet turned over and the petrol is still in the tank, a tank drain is almost always all it needs, and the following few minutes settle that, not how much was put in.

Ring us before everything else starts, so you will know what follows next.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try next

- Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will generally fail to run at all, so the motorist stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it pulls away — fine for a few miles. Motorists have that reversed, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So do not start the vehicle. And having started, never believe it: your fuel system is wearing down whenever you drive.

- Leave your ignition alone too. Diesel has two roles: it ignites, and before it burns it protects that injection pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Switching the car's ignition on is often all it takes to prime your system, which carries this petrol out of your tank then into exactly those components.

- Topping up takes out nothing. It hands you a larger tank of the same mixture, since a diesel fuel system will not handle petrol by percentage in the way that advice implies — so never tip diesel on top to water down it. Type is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Stay where you are if you safely can. A motor that has never shifted is the simplest one to handle, and we'd much rather get to an odd location than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on Gleneagles, turn your hazards on and keep it there.

- Our van arriving rather than circling rests on two things: a postcode beginning SS7 5, and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it. Keep both ready before you ring.

- What went in, roughly how much, plus if your car has run — those three facts determine the entire visit. Phone 0333 366 0103 and tell us.

The drive in is what pulled weakened diesel through the pump. Standing still has drawn nothing. Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Passat, parked outside Benfleet all day, waits idle in the tank while it waits. Phone us first — before your keys come out.

## Can petrol be drained from your diesel on the forecourt?

Plenty of this job begins at a forecourt, meaning a good chunk of that is finished on site.

We work on station forecourts all the time, with the owner's agreement, and so if you're still at Esso that is typically where this drain gets done.

At the forecourt, it is caught with your motor never fired, and no place else does it.

We can still put it right where it sits, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, the vehicle has been switched on and moved there, and that pulled fuel through the filter and into your high-pressure pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a catastrophe, though the flush then has to go past the tank to the fuel lines and your filter, and the few seconds between checking your receipt and going for your key are what settle that.

Out from the petrol pump, the next customer can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you roll the car. Very much worth doing.

Four car lengths is not worth a start.

## Tarpots and the villages near it

Tarpots is a rural village, and our technicians head out to it and to the places by it on the same runs: New Thundersley, South Benfleet, North Benfleet, Thundersley and Hopes Green.

There are separate pages for most towns in Essex, and the ones listed above are just the nearest neighbours — so yours being absent from the list tells you nothing whatsoever about if we come.

Ring us to ask instead of guessing — boundaries particularly, and anywhere the satnav might struggle with.

The ground this page covers is on our map.

Your vehicle never needs to travel to us. We operate across all of that — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

## Stranded on the roadside somewhere around Tarpots?

Some people get no sensible place to pull in whatsoever.

A normal call for us instead of an odd one: realised after setting off, finished up on the verge on High Road or in a lay-by with the hazard lights going.

Wait with the car if it's safe to be inside, yet out of the car if it isn't.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags the mix further into your fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why the engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere better.

Carrying on does your car far more harm than a technician heading out to a tricky place, and that is no trouble for us.

Here is what a job in the car park at the pub in the village normally looks like. Our engineers get to the vehicle, ask what went in, roughly how much, and whether the motor has run since — these three replies decide most of the work. Then the contaminated mix comes out of the tank, the fuel lines get rinsed, and the fuel filter comes off where your Audi A4 has a replaceable one. Clean diesel goes in and the system is bled. Then we fire it up, make sure it runs properly, and you pull away.

## Petrol in a diesel, but the car has gone

This is where your M25 comes into it — under 15 miles away from Tarpots.

Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will often manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power ebbs away, the idle goes uneven, and there may be some smoke.

Take the first junction that's sensible, pull up there, and do not restart the vehicle to move it.

Long drive? Anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the contamination. Say that on the call, as it changes what goes in the van.

Fine on the way out, sluggish on the way back. If that is how that trip to Tarpots Recreation Ground went, the tank is where to look. Petrol weakens diesel, and weaker fuel slips past the close-fitting parts that are supposed to build injection pressure — so the farther your Vauxhall Astra went, the less well it held that pressure. Pull over somewhere sensible, turn off then call us.

## Tarpots itself

Tarpots is a village in Essex, situated inland at an elevation of 29 metres, approximately 7 miles from the coastal town of Southend-on-Sea. Tarpots lies within a network of nearby settlements, including New Thundersley, South Benfleet, and North Benfleet, and is around 29 miles from central London. Tarpots has a population of around 3889 residents, predominantly living in semi-detached housing. Tarpots is characterized by its suburban residential environment.

## The visit around Tarpots, step by step

- Our engineers find out what got in, how much, and whether your motor has run. The responses shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing.

- Our technicians clear the tank of the contaminated fuel.

- We rinse the fuel lines and clear your filter, and so what's remaining in your system isn't what started the problem.

- Clean diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets primed.

- Your engine is started and checked to make sure it runs properly on clean diesel.

That has your car ready to drive away.

Permanent damage is very rare when it has been caught quickly, and as everything is done where the car is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a couple of hundred yards, left close to Great Tarpots Library. For a diesel Ford Kuga whose engine has turned, that is about the best version there is. Call us, then let the car stand with the ignition alone. Short helps, genuinely — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the fuel filter has had diluted fuel through it, and so has the pump. Which is why the fuel lines get rinsed and not just the tank cleared.

## A different problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Tarpots

The fault isn't the same, though the opening step is — never crank it — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and takes away the protection your fuel system depends on.

Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea in water.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the full story lives on its own Tarpots page. Both are ours to deal with.

## Tarpots pricing for a petrol-in-diesel drain

What changes the price is set out below, as the job isn't one job and we cannot truthfully put a single figure on this page.

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank holds — that ratio.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever went in.

- Whether a technician can safely get to the car and work on it, which hinges on where your vehicle is.

Tell us what your car is, how much got in, and whether the engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range.

If it is not time-critical — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

By this point the tank is not where most of the trouble is. Once a diesel has run, the mix is in the filter, the fuel lines, your pump and the rail — and it doesn't come back out with your tank contents. A diesel Kia Sportage that got close to St Peters, Thundersley needs your system purged, not cleared.

## Questions we get about petrol in diesel around Tarpots

## I am on a forecourt in Tarpots. Can you drain the vehicle on the spot?

Yes, and it is where a big portion of this work happens.

Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you if our technicians can work there. With the owner's permission our engineers visit Shell and the other forecourts around town all the time.

## Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

It hinges on the proportion instead of the litres, and much more on whether the engine has run.

What decides how much work is needed is if that mix has been drawn through your fuel system — because though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

## I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Switch off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop.

Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of that tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable a lot more commonly than people fear.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out correctly isn't a change and does not void a manufacturer's warranty.

Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

## Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No.

Your tank still has petrol in it after that, and the pump still has to cope with it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Not at all. Our technicians drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

## You, and your car, still together?

Switched off is the way it stays.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle after that.

Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. People fear this much more than they need to.
