# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Tartaraghan? Don't Start It

If you have not fired up the engine as yet, do not. A drain and nothing more is almost always what a vehicle needs while the fuel is still sitting in that tank and your engine has not yet been started, which is why it is the next few minutes that matter, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel travels to the car wherever it has ended up in Tartaraghan or the remainder of County Armagh, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and flushes it there.

Just one call our way will be sufficient: our technicians shall explain what follows after this. Do this straight away.

## Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

- Never fire it up — and never rely on it when it starts. This is the part motorists have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor given diesel normally just can't run, so the person stops and the harm stops with them. A diesel filled with petrol generally starts, idles and drives away perfectly well for a couple of miles. It's not okay. It is wearing out your fuel system as you drive.

- Two tasks, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only handles the one. That is why the ignition remains off also — turn it on and you often prime your system, and that is petrol exiting the tank for just those components.

- Do not dilute it. Diesel added on top takes out nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The octane makes no difference.

- We'd sooner get to an awkward place than have it started — so if you safely can, sit tight. Nothing is easier to deal with than a motor that hasn't shifted. On the verge on Chalet Road, that means hazards on then leave the car.

- Find out where you are before ringing. A postcode beginning BT62 1, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than showing up.

- Ring 0333 366 0103. Let us know what went in, about how many litres, and also if your car has fired. These three replies decide your whole visit.

## Removing petrol from your diesel on a forecourt

Pumps are where the job mostly starts, and where a fair chunk of it ends.

If you are still at the forecourt at the nearest petrol station, that is normally where the drain gets done — we work on garage forecourts regularly, with the site's agreement.

At a garage, it is caught with your engine never fired, and no place else manages it.

Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from your tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a calamity, and we can still put it right where it is. It does mean the fuel lines and your filter need rinsing as well as your tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for the key.

Staff will generally help out pushing it out from the pump, which lets the next customer get by. Welcome the offer.

Shifting the car four spaces does not justify cranking the engine.

The phone call our engineers hope for runs like this: diesel Renault Clio, a couple of litres of unleaded, done a couple of miles, now switched off at the local shops. What we're truly asking is how much fuel your pump has drawn — not how long ago it was.

## Can our engineers cover your corner of Tartaraghan?

Tartaraghan is a small village, and our vans head out to the town and to the villages near it on those same trips: The Birches, Bannfoot, Maghery, Annaghmore and Scotch Street.

There are pages for nearly all places in County Armagh, and the ones listed above are merely the immediate neighbours — so yours being absent from that list says nothing whatsoever about whether our engineers come.

Phone to ask instead of guessing — borders particularly, and wherever your satnav may struggle with.

The patch this page spans appears on this map.

Every bit of that is territory our technicians cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You never drive your car anywhere.

A passer-by will urge you to shift the car out of the gateway and deal with it later. Do not. A misfuelled diesel Nissan Qashqai on the zig-zags at the local primary school is a nuisance; the same vehicle started three more times to be polite is a fuel system instead of a tank. Each restart primes your lines and pulls more petrol past the filter and into the pump. Stay put, let everyone complain, and phone us.

## Stranded by the roadside around Tartaraghan

A chance to pull over anywhere sensible doesn't fall to everybody.

Set off, then twigged? Landed on the verge of Welsh Place, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazards going? That is a routine call here. Not an odd one.

Safe there? Sit with it. Not safe? Get out and clear of it.

It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that is the problem: restart it to get to somewhere handier and the mixture goes further into your fuel system with every mile covered.

However tricky the place, it is no trouble for us to come to it, and that's a lot better for your car than carrying on.

Straightforward job, this one — until someone takes it home. A diesel Mercedes C-Class left by the pub in the village with petrol in your tank loses nothing by standing there overnight, so leave the vehicle and call us once it is light. Expect a query about the run there, though. Short and chilly is exactly where petrol struggles to burn, and what won't burn can get past the piston rings then into the oil.

## Petrol in a diesel, and your car has rolled

Here is where the local M77 counts, over 50 miles from Tartaraghan.

A misfilled diesel will usually get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong, and the symptoms when they appear are usually lost power, a rough idle and some smoke rather than a neat stop.

The first safe exit is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone.

Long trip? Anything approaching the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the mixture. Say that on the phone, since it alters what goes in the van.

## Where's Tartaraghan?

Tartaraghan is a small locality in County Armagh, situated inland at an elevation of 18 metres, approximately 9.8 miles from the city of Armagh. Tartaraghan is characterised by its semi-detached housing and is located near other localities such as The Birches, Bannfoot, and Maghery. Tartaraghan has a population of around 555 people and is part of the wider Armagh area. Tartaraghan is also relatively distant from major cities, with London being around 336.7 miles away.

## What comes next when we arrive with you around Tartaraghan

- Three things get asked before any quote — the fuel that was put in, the amount, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.

- Out comes the tainted mixture.

- Our engineers flush your fuel lines and clear your filter, so what's left in the system isn't what caused the issue.

- The fuel system gets primed, on new diesel.

- Your engine is turned on and tested to confirm it runs correctly on clean diesel.

Then it is ready to drive away.

Long-term damage is very unusual when it has been caught soon, and because all of this is done where the car is, it never has to be taken to a garage.

Our technicians rinse the lines rather than only clearing the tank, and the reason is that diluted fuel has already reached the filter and the pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The hop truly assists — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Peugeot 3008 parked up close to the centre a couple of hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Phone us and leave it off.

## A different matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Tartaraghan

Don't crank it: that first rule applies whether what got in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this problem itself.

The lubrication a fuel system relies on gets stripped away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

Both are ours. There is a separate Tartaraghan page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Authorisation first, where there's a hire firm or a company behind the vehicle — some contracts insist on it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, ring us about the diesel Audi A3 close to a street just off the centre. You will not know how full your tank was. Barely anyone does, two days into a motor, and it gets worked out there all the same. Our engineers ask since the harm petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a couple of litres in a nearly empty tank make a much stronger mixture than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is built to resist igniting under pressure, which is precisely what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more your engine knocks and smokes and flattens off.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Tartaraghan

Frankly, no single price belongs on a page like this. The job differs. Here is what varies it:

- This is the big one: whether your engine has been run, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, against how much your tank holds.

- The sort of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can our van reach it and work there sensibly?

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much went in, and whether the motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range.

Not pressing, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Tartaraghan motorists

## Fuel drains on a Tartaraghan petrol station forecourt

A large share of this work takes place there, so yes.

Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like another forecourt nearby is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear if working there's possible.

## Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Litres are not the measure. Ratio is, and much more than either, it matters whether anything has been run.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is required is whether that mixture has been sucked through the system.

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What now?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

Driving takes the issue along — out of your tank, into the pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really useful thing left to you is not restarting the car.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out properly is not an alteration and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a distinct issue and it does not restore what petrol has thinned.

The pump still has to live with it, because your tank still has petrol in it later on.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Not at all. Our technicians drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a main dealer.

## Is your vehicle still with you?

Turned off is the way the car remains.

Turn it off somewhere sensible and leave it off, if you have already driven it.

This is recoverable from far more commonly than motorists fear, and a still, cold vehicle is the best place to be in.

Throughout County Armagh and in Tartaraghan: mobile fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
