# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Team Valley? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, across Team Valley and the remainder of Tyne and Wear. The very first thing to do is not to start the motor. While your engine has not yet turned over and the petrol is still in the tank, a tank drain is nearly always all it takes, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much was put in.

Our team can explain what the next move is. Phone — it comes ahead of everything else.

## What to do first about petrol in a diesel

- Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will usually refuse to run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the wear. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it pulls away — fine for a couple of miles. Most people have that muddled, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So don't start the car. And once started, never rely on it: your fuel system is wearing down as you drive.

- Two things, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps the injection pump and injectors protected. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why your ignition remains off as well — turn it on and you usually prime your system, and that's petrol exiting the tank for precisely those components.

- That guidance presumes a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol by percentage. It doesn't. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is cleared; what you get is a fuller tank of the same blend. And no, the octane makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.

- Stay put if it's safe to. Hazards on, ignition off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Queensway North, anywhere — a difficult spot for us is better than a started engine, and nothing is easier for us to deal with than a car that never shifted.

- Find out where you are before calling. A postcode that starts NE11 0, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than arriving.

- What was put in, roughly how much, and also whether the car has run — the three facts decide the entire call-out. Phone 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

## Clearing petrol from a diesel on a forecourt

Plenty of this job begins at a forecourt, so a large chunk of it gets completed there.

Our technicians work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the owner's permission, and so if you are still at Sainsbury's that's typically where the drain gets done.

The forecourt is the only place the mistake gets halted before your motor has started.

Fuel pulled out of the tank and through your filter, all the way to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when the engine is started and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes the fuel filter and the fuel lines as well as that tank. That's still not a disaster, and our technicians sort it out where your car is. What settles it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was checked.

The staff will normally happily wheel the vehicle clear of the petrol pump so the next driver can get past. That is worth doing.

Four car lengths is not worth a restart.

The tricky part is that bay, not your fuel. Motors either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and occasionally a height barrier on the way in that determines whether our van can reach you at all — so when you call from a car park like the one at Sainsbury's, tell us how much room there is about you and which way round your car is. Those our technicians attend often. Should there be no room to work alongside the diesel Skoda Octavia, it gets rolled with the engine off, and not out of pedantry over a handful of seconds of running: priming happens at every start, more of that blend leaves that tank for your pump, and two shunts into a better space have gradually made a worse job of what was simply a car sitting still.

## Team Valley and the villages beside it

The same journeys get us to Chowdene, Lobley Hill, Low Fell, Lady Park and Saltwell along with Team Valley, which is a residential suburb.

Not on the list? It means nothing. The names above are just the nearest few, and most towns across Tyne and Wear have a page of their own elsewhere on our site.

Close to a border, or anywhere the satnav struggles with? Ring us and ask instead of presuming.

The area this page covers appears on our map.

The lot is territory our technicians serve: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You don't drive the vehicle anywhere.

Twenty to nine. By Oakfield Junior School. Late already, and your receipt in your hand says unleaded. Turn the hazard lights on, leave the engine alone, then call us. You could think three miles is nothing, in the BMW 3 Series or anything else — except that fuel is metered to demand, and a drive taken in a rush asks for a great deal of that.

## Roadside breakdowns in Team Valley

Not everybody finds a decent place to pull over.

A normal call for us and not a rare one: worked out after setting off, finished up along the verge of Queensway South or in a lay-by with the hazard lights flashing.

Clear of the motor when it is not wise to be inside, beside it if it is.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that mix further into your fuel system — and oblige it often will, which is why the engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere safer.

Our van driving to a tricky place is no problem for us, and it's much better for the car than pressing on.

Risk the drive home from The Nine Pins? No. It will fire up and it will move off perfectly well, which is the issue — a diesel on a diluted tank runs normally while wearing down the components your fuel should be protecting. Leave the Audi A4 and call us.

## Driven it already? Pull in, then read this

under 3 miles out of Team Valley, the Central Motorway East is what counts now.

A loss of power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, rather than a tidy stop — and a misfuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Do not restart it to reposition. Come off at the first safe exit and turn off.

Assume the worst of that on a long trip. Anything approaching the under 5 miles to the nearest city, and the contamination has been through the filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Say so when you call. What our engineers bring alters.

Injection pressure is the part being lost. Petrol dilutes diesel, and weaker fuel seeps past the close-fitting components that are supposed to build that pressure, so the farther a diesel Peugeot 3008 drove, the less well it held. Happy on the way out and sluggish on the way back is how the drive to Shanks Wood went, then, and that tank is the place to look. Stop somewhere safe, turn off and ring us.

## All about Team Valley

Team Valley is a small suburban area located on the riverside in Tyne and Wear, near the city of Newcastle upon Tyne. Team Valley sits at a low elevation of around 10 metres, close to the River Tyne, and is surrounded by other nearby places such as Chowdene and Lobley Hill. Team Valley has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are the most predominant. Team Valley is situated approximately 3 miles from Newcastle upon Tyne, making it a convenient residential area.

## When we get to you around Team Valley: what happens

- The replies alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing: what went in, how much of that, and whether your motor has run.

- The tank gets cleared completely.

- Our technicians flush your fuel lines and clear the fuel filter, and so what is remaining in the system isn't what started the trouble.

- Our technicians put new diesel in and bleed the system.

- Our technicians turn it on and confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

That leaves the car ready to pull away.

All of this is done where your car is, so it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been noticed early, permanent damage is very rare.

About as well as this goes, once the engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and the diesel Ford Fiesta parked near Site of Ravensworth coalmill hardly two streets on. Call us, and leave it off. A short drive does truly help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, so your filter and your pump have had weakened fuel through them — hence purging the fuel lines instead of only clearing that tank.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, around Team Valley?

If what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the first step is unchanged — don't crank it — but this fault isn't.

Petrol thins your diesel and strips the lubrication the system depends on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

AdBlue removal in Team Valley has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it is frequently the more serious of the two. Our technicians handle both.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Team Valley?

Our technicians can't put one figure on this page frankly, as this job is not one job. What changes it:

- This is the key one: whether the engine has been started, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, weighed against how much the tank holds.

- The kind of liquid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Whether our van can sensibly reach your vehicle and work on it, which depends on where your car is.

A firm answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the quantity, and whether it has run.

Not time-critical, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then works.

## Things we get about petrol in diesel around Team Valley

## I'm on a forecourt around Team Valley. Can you drain it on the spot?

A fair part of this work takes place there, so yes.

Our technicians attend EV Chargers and the other forecourts nearby regularly, with the owner's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether the engine has run matters much more, though the ratio counts too, rather than the litres.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been drawn right through, or has it not?

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

Driving moves the problem along — out of your tank, into the pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely valuable thing left to you isn't restarting it.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out correctly is not an alteration and does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a separate issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No.

Later? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to put up with the stuff.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There is no need to take it to a franchised dealer, because we drain and flush the car wherever it is.

## You, and your vehicle, still together?

Keep the engine switched off.

Turn it off somewhere sensible and leave it off, if you have already driven it.

Cold and still, a motor is in the best position available — and drivers fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

Throughout Tyne and Wear and around Team Valley: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
