# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in The Bank?

With your tank still carrying the petrol and your engine not yet turned over, nearly every job requires only a drain, so leave the engine off. That outcome is decided in the minutes immediately after filling up, and not by the amount that was put in. Across The Bank and the remainder of Cheshire, Petrol in Diesel drains your car and cleans it where it sits, whether at a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt.

Ring us before everything else happens, and you'll see what happens after that.

## The next five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Don't start the car — and do not trust it when it fires up. This is the bit drivers have wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine fed diesel typically just will not run, so the driver stops and the harm ends with them. A diesel given petrol normally starts, ticks over and pulls away without complaint for a few miles. It isn't all right. It is grinding the fuel system whenever you drive.

- Two jobs, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure fuel pump and injectors protected. Petrol only handles the one. That is why your ignition is left off as well — turn it on and you frequently prime the system, and that is petrol leaving the tank for just those parts.

- That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It does not. Pour diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you have is a larger tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.

- Stay put if it is sensible to. Hazards on, motor off, keep the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on The Bank, anywhere — a tricky location for us beats a started diesel, and nothing is easier for us to sort than a motor that never shifted.

- Know where you are before phoning. A postcode beginning ST7 3, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise our van circles rather than turning up.

- Three answers settle the entire visit: the fuel you put in, the approximate quantity of it, plus whether anything has been running since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

Phone us before you collect the car. Petrol into a diesel Renault Clio this morning, and the car at Kidsgrove ever since? Then the day has taken nothing from you: fuel sitting in a tank is harmless, and any wear came on the journey in, when the pump was pulling diesel that petrol had weakened.

## Can petrol be pumped from your diesel at the forecourt?

A big chunk of this work is done at a forecourt, since that is where it usually begins.

Still at Tesco? Then that's generally where it takes place. Garage forecourts are everyday for us, with the agreement of the site.

At a garage, the mistake gets caught with the engine never started, and nowhere else does that.

The few seconds between reading your receipt and going for the keys decide how much requires flushing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from the tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and your filter require rinsing as well as your tank. It's not a calamity, and our engineers can still put it right where your car is.

Staff will generally pitch in pushing it away from the petrol pump, which lets the next driver get past. Welcome the help.

Firing the car for four vehicle lengths? Don't.

## Areas our vans reach around The Bank

These same trips take us to Mow Cop, Dales Green, Scholar Green, Ackers Crossing and The Rookery along with The Bank, which is a village.

If yours isn't on this list it doesn't mean we don't come — there are dedicated pages for nearly all locations in Cheshire, and the ones mentioned above are merely the closest neighbours.

Ring us to ask rather than presuming, especially if you are on a border or anywhere the satnav struggles with.

The patch the page includes appears on the map.

The car does not need to come to us. We operate over the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

A passer-by will urge you to shift the vehicle out of the gateway and fix it later. Please don't. A misfuelled diesel BMW 3 Series on the zig-zags outside Woodcocks' Well CofE Primary School is an inconvenience; the same vehicle fired up three more times to be helpful is a fuel system rather than a tank. Each restart primes your lines and draws more petrol past your filter and into your pump. Leave it there, let people grumble, then ring us.

## Roadside breakdowns around The Bank

A chance to stop anywhere suitable doesn't come to everyone.

Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge beside Meadowside Lane as you realised after setting off — our technicians take that call regularly enough that it's the ordinary kind.

Sit beside your car while it's safe to wait in it, but out of the vehicle when it is not.

Don't start up your engine to limp the vehicle somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will usually oblige, and every mile it obliges for is drawing the mixture further into your fuel system.

A technician coming to an awkward place is no bother for us, and it is much better for the vehicle than carrying on.

This is what a job in the car park by The Rising Sun typically looks like. Our engineers arrive at your car, ask what was put in, roughly how much, and whether your engine has run since — these three replies decide much of the work. Then the contaminated blend comes out of the tank, your lines get rinsed, and the filter comes off where your Mercedes C-Class has a replaceable one. Clean diesel goes in and the fuel system is primed. Then our engineers fire it up, make sure it runs correctly, and you set off.

## Petrol in a diesel, and your car has gone

Here is where the local M6 comes into it — under 5 miles from The Bank.

A drop in power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the signs when they come, rather than a tidy stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Pull off at the first sensible exit, switch off, and never restart the vehicle to reposition.

It changes what our technicians bring, and so say so when you phone: on a longer drive — anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city — assume the petrol has been through the filter, your pump and the injectors.

## A little about The Bank

The Bank is a small village in Cheshire, situated on the riverside with a mix of rural and suburban characteristics. The Bank sits at an elevation of 178 metres, overlooking the surrounding countryside, and is located near the Potteries region. The Bank has a population of around 653 people, predominantly living in detached houses, and is close to nearby places such as Mow Cop and Scholar Green.

## When our technicians arrive with you in The Bank: what we do

- Our engineers ask first, price after. What got in? How much? Has your motor run? Those answers change what the work actually is.

- The contaminated fuel comes out of your tank.

- What is left in your system should not be what created the issue, so your fuel lines get flushed and your filter cleared.

- Priming follows, once new diesel is in.

- Our technicians start it and make sure it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

From that point, you're ready to set off.

Permanent damage is very unusual when it has been spotted early, and as all of it is done where the car is, it never has to be taken to a garage.

Emptying your Audi A3, changing your filter where there's a workable one, purging the fuel lines, putting fresh fuel through the whole circuit: that's this job, and it is shaped by the worst of that sitting in your lines rather than in your tank by this point. Three things help when you ring from near Mount Pleasant Village Hall — which side the filler is on, whether a van can pull up beside without blocking the road, and whether the engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the usual location our technicians work, so the location itself is hardly ever the problem. A narrow parking bay is better than a motor driven somewhere more convenient.

## The Bank AdBlue removal is a separate matter

If what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first rule is unchanged — do not crank it — but the fault is not.

Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and takes away the protection your fuel system depends on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with the diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.

Frequently the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own The Bank page. Both are ours to deal with.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in The Bank

We cannot put one price on this page truthfully, as the job isn't one job. What moves it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that ratio.

- Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where the vehicle is, and if a van can sensibly reach and work on it.

Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and if the motor has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is fine for that.

Purged, not emptied — that is what a diesel Citroen C3 which got as far as Mount Pleasant Village Sign needs. Running a diesel puts that mixture into your filter, your lines, the pump and its rail, none of which empties with the tank, and so by now that tank holds the smaller part of the trouble.

## Petrol in diesel: everyday questions around The Bank

## I'm on a forecourt in The Bank. Can you drain the car on the spot?

Yes — forecourts are where a large portion of this gets done.

Often, provided the site consents: Sainsbury's, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that place is something we answer straight away.

## Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

It rests on the proportion instead of the litres, and a lot more on whether the motor has run.

Five litres into an almost dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been pulled right through, or has it not?

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What then?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and keep it off.

It's salvageable a lot more commonly than motorists assume, even though driving is what takes the issue from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out correctly is not an alteration and does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

What is likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for your engine to remain off.

## Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

What petrol has thinned is not replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a distinct issue. So no.

Petrol stays in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You do not need one. Your car is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

## You, and the car, still together?

The motor stays off.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, switch off, then let it stay that way.

Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. People fear this much more than they need to.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — call-out fuel draining in The Bank and throughout Cheshire.
