# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in The Flatts? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, across The Flatts and the rest of West Midlands. The very first thing to do is not to start your engine. When the engine has not run and the petrol is still inside the tank, a drain is nearly always all it takes, and the coming few minutes determine that, not how much was put in.

Our technicians can explain what the following step is. Call us — it comes ahead of anything else.

## Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in order

- Whenever you drive, your pump and the fuel injectors wear. That is why you never crank it, and why you never trust it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel specifically — the bit motorists get wrong — is that it drives away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor typically can't run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the wear with them. This one lets you drive on.

- Two things, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure fuel pump and injectors oiled. Petrol only does the one. Which is why the car's ignition is left off also — turn it on and you frequently prime that system, and that's petrol exiting that tank for just those parts.

- Never water down it. Diesel added on top removes nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system handles petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The octane makes no difference.

- Sit tight if it is wise to. Hazards on, engine off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Kendricks Road, anywhere — an awkward place for us beats a started diesel, and nothing is simpler for us to sort than a vehicle that never moved.

- Before you phone, have your position. Anything closest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode that starts WS10 8 — that is what settles whether our van shows up or circles.

- Ring 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three questions — what got in, approximately how much, plus whether the car has been run. The replies determine whatever happens next.

Ring us before you collect the vehicle. Petrol into a diesel Renault Megane this morning, and the vehicle outside Darlaston ever since? Then the wait has taken nothing from you: fuel in a tank is harmless, and any harm was done on the drive in, when your pump was pulling diesel that petrol had thinned.

## Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

A big part of the work is finished at a forecourt, since that is where it usually kicks off.

The drain typically takes place right there. Still on the forecourt at Texaco? Given the owner's agreement, that is a place our technicians work, and regularly.

At a forecourt, the mistake gets caught with the engine never started, and nowhere else does it.

The few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for the keys determine how much needs rinsing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — your car was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from your tank, through the filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means the lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as your tank. It's not a calamity, and our technicians can still put it right where the car sits.

Clear of the petrol pump, the next driver can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you roll the car. Very much worth doing.

Rolling the car four spaces does not warrant firing the motor.

## Places our vans cover around The Flatts

Darlaston Green, Darlaston, Fallings Heath, The Leys, Bentley — each of those on the rounds that bring us across to The Flatts too, a residential suburb.

If yours isn't on this list it does not mean we don't come — there are pages for most towns around West Midlands, and the ones named above are merely the immediate neighbours.

Call us to check rather than assuming — county lines especially, and anywhere your satnav may get wrong.

Use this map for the area shown here.

We work roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks across all of it, and your car doesn't need to travel to us.

You'll be advised to move it clear of the gateway and sort it out later. Don't. On the zig-zags at Salisbury Primary School, a wrongly fuelled Nissan Qashqai running on diesel is in the way, and that is all it is. Crank it three more times being polite and you have turned a tank into a fuel system: every start primes the fuel lines, every prime pulls more petrol beyond the fuel filter toward the pump. Let them grumble. Phone.

## Roadside breakdowns in The Flatts

Not everybody has a suitable place to stop.

Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Heath Road because you realised after setting off — our technicians take that call often enough that it's the ordinary kind.

Remain by your car while it's safe to sit there, but clear of it if it is not.

Don't start it up to reach a nicer location. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging draws the mixture deeper into the fuel system.

We'll bring our van to a difficult location without any fuss, and for your car that is far better than driving on.

You set off at the end, once our technicians have fired it up and confirmed it runs correctly on clean diesel, with the fuel system primed. Before that, in the car park outside The Globe Inn, the polluted fuel comes out of the tank, the fuel lines get cleaned and the filter comes off where your Audi A4 has a serviceable one. It all starts with three questions when we reach the vehicle: what got in, how much of it, and whether it has been started since.

## Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a few miles

The M6 is the road that matters now, and sits under a mile from The Flatts.

Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will frequently manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power ebbs away, your idle goes lumpy, and there may be smoke.

Take the first junction that's safe, stop there, and don't start the vehicle to move it.

Long trip? Anything near the under 5 miles to the nearest city and you should assume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it arrived at by the petrol. Say that on the phone, as it alters what goes in the van.

## The Flatts itself

The Flatts is a suburban area located on the riverside in the West Midlands, with an elevation of 126 metres. The Flatts sits near the city of Wolverhampton, approximately 4.5 miles away, and is close to nearby places such as Darlaston Green and Fallings Heath. The Flatts has a population of around 3997 people and is characterised by semi-detached housing. The Flatts is situated about 109 miles northwest of London, in a region of England with a mix of industrial and residential landscapes.

## What follows when our technicians reach you in The Flatts

- Our technicians ask first, quote after. What was put in? How much? Has your engine run? Those replies change what the work really is.

- Our engineers clear that tank of the contaminated mixture.

- What is remaining in your system should not be what caused the trouble, and so the fuel lines get rinsed and the filter cleaned.

- The system gets bled, on clean diesel.

- The motor is turned on and tested to make sure it runs smoothly on new diesel.

That leaves it ready to drive away.

Lasting damage is very rare when it has been noticed early, and because everything is done where the car is, it never has to go to a garage.

Our engineers flush your lines instead of only draining your tank, and the reason is that diluted fuel has already arrived at the filter and the pump: it was a start and a drive, however short. The hop really helps — pulled off the forecourt, receipt read, a diesel Dacia Duster parked up near Samaj Mandal a few hundred yards later is about as well as this goes once your engine has turned. Phone us then leave it off.

## A different problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around The Flatts

The problem is not the same, though the opening instruction is — do not crank it — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and strips out the lubrication the system relies on.

Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Often the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own The Flatts page. Both are ours to deal with.

Turn off where you have stopped, and don't start it to find somewhere better — by Masjid-E-Umar or anywhere at all. Rattling, a ragged idle, white smoke and a dead throttle are a wrongly fuelled diesel BMW 5 Series telling you what is wrong.

## The Flatts prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

What changes the figure is listed below, as this job isn't one job and our engineers cannot honestly put a single price on this page.

- Whether your engine has been started or driven. This is the key one.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, set against how much that tank can hold.

- The kind of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.

- Where the car is, and whether a van can safely get to and work on it.

Tell us the car, the quantity and if it has run, and you will get a clear answer rather than a range.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is fine for that.

## Petrol in diesel queries from The Flatts motorists

## Fuel drains on a The Flatts petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a large share of this takes place.

We attend another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts around town routinely, with the site's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you if we can work there.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres are not the yardstick. Ratio is, and far more than either, it matters if anything has been run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mix been sucked right through, or has it not?

## I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and keep it off.

It's salvageable much more regularly than people expect, even though driving is what moves the trouble from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out properly is not a change and does not void a manufacturer's warranty.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave the car switched off.

## Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

What petrol has thinned isn't replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old workaround for a different problem. So no.

The pump still has to cope with it, since your tank still has petrol in it later.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the vehicle is, we drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## You, and your car, still together?

Shut off is how it stays.

If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere safe, switch it off and leave it off.

Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best place to be in. Drivers fear this a lot more than they need to.

Emptying misfuelled cars, The Flatts and the rest of West Midlands, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
