# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in The Freehold?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, across The Freehold and the rest of Kent. The first thing to do is not to fire up the motor. When your engine has not yet turned over and the fuel is still inside your tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it requires, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much got in.

One ring our way will be sufficient: we will tell you what follows next. Make it straight away.

## What to try next about petrol in a diesel

- Do not crank it. Started anyway? Then never trust it. Diesel in a petrol car normally won't run, and so the motorist stops and the damage stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It drives off fine, for a couple of miles. Motorists get that confused. It isn't all right — your fuel system is grinding every mile you drive.

- Leave the car's ignition off too. Diesel does two jobs: it ignites, and before it combusts it greases that high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Flicking the ignition on is often sufficient to prime your system, which pulls the petrol out of your tank and into exactly those components.

- Do not dilute it. Diesel added on top removes nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The type makes no difference.

- A car that has never moved is the quickest one to sort, so remain where you are if you reasonably can. Stopped on the verge on Augustine Road? Hazards on, then keep the vehicle there. A difficult location works for us better than a started engine.

- Know where you are before phoning. A postcode that starts CT12 4, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the technician circles rather than showing up.

- Three replies settle the entire call-out: the liquid you tipped in, the rough measure of it, plus if anything has been going since. The number is 0333 366 0103.

Do not run it home. The journey in has already pushed a real volume of petrol-thinned diesel through your high-pressure pump of your Volkswagen Passat, and the drive back would close to double it for no purpose at all. Phone us from the platform if that's handier. We never need you standing over your car outside Minster whilst our technicians work, and we'd very much rather speak to you tonight than discover on Monday.

## On the forecourt: clearing petrol from the diesel

Pumps are where this work often starts, and where a big portion of that ends.

If you're still on the forecourt at the nearest petrol station, that is normally where the drain happens — we operate on garage forecourts regularly, with the site's agreement.

Nowhere else except a garage can the mistake be stopped with your engine still untouched.

We can still sort it out where it sits, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a private drive or in a lay-by, the car has been switched on and driven there, and that pulled fuel through the fuel filter and into your high-pressure pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a catastrophe, but the flush then has to reach past the tank to your lines and the filter, and the few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the key are what settle that.

Roll the car out of the way if the attendants volunteer, and they usually will. The next driver gets past the pump, and that is worth doing.

Cranking the car to move four car lengths isn't.

## The Freehold and the areas next to it

The Freehold is a residential suburb, and our team go out to the town and to the places near it on the usual runs: Minster, Durlock, Mount Pleasant, Hoo and Way.

Not on the list? That tells you nothing. The names above are simply the nearest few, and most locations around Kent have a page of their own somewhere on the site.

Presuming is the mistake to avoid, especially on the boundary or somewhere your phone gets lost. Phone and check.

Check the map for the ground included on this page.

The lot is territory we cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You do not drive your vehicle anywhere.

Move the car out of the gateway and sort it out later — that's what someone will say, and it is wrong. Stopped on the zig-zags outside Minster Church of England Primary School, a misfuelled diesel Peugeot 3008 is a nuisance and nothing worse. Restarted three more times for courtesy, it is no longer a tank fault but a fuel system one, as priming occurs with every start and more petrol goes through your filter on to your pump. Let people moan. Call us.

## Broken down by the roadside around The Freehold

Some people find no safe spot to pull over at all.

A routine call for us and not a rare one: worked out after setting off, ended up on the verge of Freeman's Road or in a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Fine there? Remain by it. Not okay? Climb out and clear of it.

It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that is the trouble: fire it up to get to somewhere handier and that mix goes further into the system with every mile driven.

Driving on causes your car far more harm than a technician driving out to an inconvenient location, and that is no bother for us.

It will start. It will drive off quite happily. That's the issue, because a diesel on a weakened tank runs generally while wearing down the parts its fuel should be protecting. So no, do not chance the trip home from The New Inn — leave the Mercedes E-Class then phone.

## A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

Your M2 is the one that counts now, and runs under 25 miles from The Freehold.

A drop in power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they come, instead of a clean stop — and a misfuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Get off at the next sensible junction, switch off, and do not start the vehicle to reposition.

It changes what we bring, so tell us when you call: on a longer trip — anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city — take it the mixture has been through the fuel filter, your pump and your injectors.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: your fuel has to hold pressure, not merely burn. Thin that fuel and pressure which should build then stay built leaks past gaps instead, leaving the motor a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was built around. Petrol weakens diesel, and diesel has to be heavy enough to seal the close-fitting parts it runs through — that's the whole process. It explains the ordinary Monkton Sports & Play Area call too: a diesel Audi A3 that travelled out without fuss and came back down on power, rough at idle, perhaps smoking a little. None of which is the engine failing, and that's the bit worth hearing. Your fuel has stopped acting like diesel. Put the fuel right and it stops.

## Where's The Freehold?

The Freehold is a suburban area in Kent, situated inland at an elevation of 16 metres, approximately 10.7 miles from Canterbury. The Freehold is characterized by its semi-detached housing stock, which reflects the typical residential development of the South East region. The Freehold is located near other local places such as Minster, Durlock, and Mount Pleasant, and is about 63.1 miles from London.

## Our visit in The Freehold, step by step

- We ask first, price after. What was put in? How much? Has your motor run? Those responses change what the work actually is.

- Our technicians drain your tank of the tainted fuel.

- Our engineers purge your fuel lines and clean the filter, so what is left in your system isn't what started the issue.

- Our technicians put new diesel in and bleed the fuel system.

- After it's turned on, we confirm it runs properly on new diesel.

After that it is ready to set off.

Our technicians do all of it wherever your car has ended up, which means it never needs to go to a garage, and if it has been spotted early, it is very rare for there to be permanent damage.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, in The Freehold?

If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening rule is unchanged — don't fire it up — yet the fault isn't.

Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that relies on it. That's petrol.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to corrosion and build-up in its place.

Our engineers handle both, and AdBlue removal around The Freehold has its own page with the full story — including why it's frequently the more significant of the two.

## The Freehold prices for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

Frankly, no single figure fits on a page like this. This job differs. Here's what changes it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel went in, compared with how much your tank can hold.

- Whether it's unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can our van get to it and work there sensibly?

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm instead of as a range.

Not urgent, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

A few streets, then it stopped. Throttle soft, idle uneven, and your diesel Volvo XC60 is parked up by Minster Village Hall. Your engine isn't giving up — that softness is fuel that won't build pressure. There is no light on the dash for it, and so motors like yours usually get driven a second time before anyone picks up the phone. Don't. Off, then phone us.

## Petrol in diesel: everyday questions in The Freehold

## Fuel drains on a The Freehold petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a good portion of this happens.

Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Esso is somewhere we're regularly, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear if working there is possible.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It rests on the ratio instead of the litres, and far more on whether the motor has run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, of course. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that blend sucked through it.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Turn off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop.

Driving is what takes the issue from your tank into your pump and injectors — but it's salvageable a lot more frequently than motorists fear, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A drain and flush carried out properly isn't a modification and doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a separate problem and it doesn't replace what petrol has thinned.

The pump still has to live with it, as that tank still has petrol in it afterwards.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

## Is your car still with you?

Keep the engine switched off.

If you have already driven it, pull in somewhere safe, turn it off then keep it off.

This is recoverable from a lot more commonly than motorists fear, and a still, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining in The Freehold and across Kent.
