# The Friary: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, across The Friary and the remainder of Wiltshire. The first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. While the engine has not yet run and the petrol is still inside the tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes, and the coming few minutes settle that, not how much was put in.

Contact us before everything else happens, so you'll see what happens after that.

## The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Do not crank it — and don't rely on it when it starts. That is the part people get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor filled with diesel normally just won't run, so the driver stops and the damage stops with them. A diesel fed petrol usually starts, ticks over and drives off without complaint for several miles. It's not fine. It is grinding that fuel system as you drive.

- Diesel combusts, and before it ignites it greases — that high-pressure fuel pump, its injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the ignition off too: switching it on is frequently enough to prime the system, and priming pulls petrol from your tank into just those parts.

- Don't tip diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system won't cope with petrol by percentage in the way that guidance implies, and topping up clears nothing — it only gives you a bigger tank of the same mix. The grade makes no difference either: super unleaded is still petrol.

- A car that has never moved is the easiest one to sort, and so stay where you are if you reasonably can. Parked on the verge on St Ann Street? Hazards on, and leave it there. An odd spot works for us better than a started motor.

- Get your location prepared before you ring. A postcode starting SP1 2 and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it is the difference between our van arriving and our van circling.

- Ring 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three queries — what was put in, about how many litres, plus if the engine has been started. Your answers settle whatever happens next.

How many miles you travelled is what we care about, not how long your car has been stood — and here is why. Diesel does two jobs on its way through an engine: it burns, and before burning it lubricates its high-pressure pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first only. So a hurried top-up on the drive in, the penny dropping somewhere around eleven, and a diesel Volkswagen Tiguan left outside Salisbury since quarter past eight shows those few miles were covered with your pump labouring on a liquid robbed of much of its protection. Call us and keep the vehicle right where it stands.

## Clearing petrol from your diesel at a forecourt

Plenty of the work starts at a forecourt, which means a large chunk of that is finished on site.

Our technicians work on garage forecourts regularly, with the site's agreement, so if you are still at Esso that is typically where this drain gets done.

At the forecourt, it is halted with your motor never started, and nowhere else manages that.

Fuel pulled out of your tank and through the fuel filter, right to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what happens when your engine is switched on and your car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush includes your filter and the fuel lines as well as your tank. That's still not a catastrophe, and our engineers put it right where your car sits. What settles it is whether the key was turned in the seconds after the receipt was read.

Away from the pump, the next motorist can get by — so yes, let the staff help you move the car. Well worth it.

Firing the car just to move four vehicle lengths isn't.

## Can our engineers reach your corner of The Friary?

The Friary is a residential suburb, and so our team get out to the town and to the villages by it on the usual runs: The Close, Salisbury, Wyndham Park, Milford and St Pauls.

There are pages for most locations across Wiltshire, and the ones mentioned above are just the closest neighbours — so yours being missing from the list tells you nothing whatsoever about if our technicians come.

Near the border, or anywhere your phone struggles with? Ring us to check instead of assuming.

Look at this map for the patch included on this page.

We operate at the roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of it, and the vehicle does not need to travel to us.

Nothing alerts you, because from behind the wheel there's nothing to be warned about. Your diesel Audi A4 will have seemed entirely ordinary on the way back from St Osmund's Catholic Primary School, Salisbury, and they all do — which is the trap with petrol in a diesel rather than the reverse. Diesel in a petrol car generally refuses to run, stopping the driver and stopping the harm with them. Petrol in a diesel starts, idles, moves off as though nothing had happened, and all the while your pump keeps working without the protection its fuel is supposed to supply. Tell us approximately how far, and how hard. The harder matters more.

## Stuck by the kerbside in The Friary

Not everyone has the chance to pull over anywhere sensible.

Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of Friary Lane since you noticed after setting off — we take that call often enough that it is the usual kind.

Whether you sit by the vehicle or stand away from it rests on whether being nearby seems sensible.

It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that is the trouble: fire it up to get to somewhere better and that blend goes further into your fuel system with every mile covered.

Driving on does the car far more harm than a van driving out to an inconvenient location, and that is no trouble for us.

Leave it there overnight. Ring us first thing. Nothing about a diesel Dacia Duster standing in the parking area by The Chapter House worsens as it sits, tank of petrol or not, and the job remains a simple one right up till the moment it gets taken home. The query our technicians arrive with is about that trip there: a cold motor over a short hop is where petrol ignites least well, and whatever fails to burn can work its way past the rings into the sump.

## Run it already? Pull over, then see below

under 15 miles out of The Friary, your M27 is what matters now.

A misfilled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, and the symptoms when they come are typically a drop in power, a rough idle and smoke rather than a neat stop.

Take the first exit that's safe, stop there, and don't restart it to reposition.

Long drive? Anything approaching the under a mile to the closest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the contamination. Say that on the phone, as it changes what goes in the van.

## The Friary itself

The Friary is a suburban area located on the riverside in Wiltshire, with The Friary sitting at an elevation of 48 metres above sea level. The Friary is situated close to the city centre of Salisbury, with The Friary being just 0.4 miles away from the city. The Friary is characterized by its predominant housing type, which is flat, and The Friary is part of the larger urban area surrounding Salisbury.

## What our engineers do when our engineers get to you around The Friary

- The responses change the work, which is why we ask before pricing: what went in, how much of that, and whether your motor has run.

- Out flows the contaminated mixture.

- What is remaining in the system shouldn't be what started the trouble, so the fuel lines get rinsed and the filter cleared.

- We pour new diesel in and prime your system.

- It is started with clean diesel in it, and our engineers make sure that it is running properly.

That has it ready to pull away.

Long-term damage is very unusual when it has been noticed early, and because everything is done where your car is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

Why so blunt about leaving your keys alone? Since the pump is upstream of the injectors, and a worn-out one sends whatever it sheds downstream with the fuel. Call us. Leave the Vauxhall Astra close to Graham Oliver Gallery.

## A different job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around The Friary

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening instruction is unchanged — your motor stays off — whereas the fault beneath it is a separate one altogether.

The lubrication a fuel system depends on is taken away by petrol, which dilutes your diesel.

Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and deposits.

AdBlue removal around The Friary has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's often the more significant of the two. Our technicians deal with both.

A vehicle you collected two days ago gets driven further before anyone sees anything, which is the hire and courtesy problem in one sentence — and how far it went is what determines the volume of petrol arriving at your injectors. Nothing careless about the mistake itself: a modern diesel filler neck takes the smaller petrol nozzle with almost no resistance, so new locations see most of these. Call us from wherever you are, close to St Ann's Gate or not, and we'll come to the Mercedes A-Class.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain in The Friary

Our engineers cannot put one price on this page truthfully, since this job is not one job. What moves it:

- Whether the motor has been run or driven. This is the key one.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- The sort of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Access: the car's position, and if working on it there is sensible for a van.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much went in, and if your motor has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing pressing about it — is fine for that.

## Petrol in diesel: frequent queries in The Friary

## At a petrol station around The Friary, can you do a fuel drain there?

A large portion of this work gets done there, so yes.

Often, provided the site agrees: BP, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that spot is something our engineers answer on the spot.

## Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Ratio settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: different situations, definitely. Either way, the work needed comes down to one thing, which is whether the system has had that mix drawn through it.

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? Now what?

Turn off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop.

Driving is what moves the problem from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it is fixable a lot more commonly than motorists expect, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart the vehicle.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It is not an alteration, and so a drain then flush carried out properly doesn't void a manufacturer's warranty.

An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

Two-stroke oil solves a separate problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No.

After that? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You don't need one. Your car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

## Is your car still with you?

Switched off is the way it remains.

If you have already driven the car, pull in somewhere safe, switch it off and keep it off.

This is recoverable from much more often than drivers expect, and a stationary, cold car is the best place to be in.

Call-out fuel draining around The Friary and across Wiltshire — at the roadside, on the forecourt or at home.
