# Petrol in a Diesel Car in The Green

If you have not fired up the motor as yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing else is almost always what a vehicle requires while the fuel is still sitting in that tank and your engine has not yet turned over, which is why it is the following few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel comes to your car wherever it has come to rest in The Green or the remainder of South Yorkshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and flushes it there.

We shall show you what the following move will be. Ring us — this goes before all else.

## What next? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

- While you drive, your pump and the fuel injectors wear down. That is why you do not crank it, and why you don't trust it once it has started. The thing about petrol in a diesel specifically — the bit most people get wrong — is that it drives away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine typically cannot run at all, which stops the person and stops the harm with them. This one lets you drive on.

- Two jobs, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure fuel pump and injectors greased. Petrol only manages the one. That is why the ignition is left off as well — flick it on and you frequently prime that system, and that's petrol exiting your tank for exactly those components.

- That guidance assumes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It will not. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you have is a bigger tank of the same mixture. And no, the type makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.

- Stay where you are if you safely can. A car that has not shifted is the simplest one to deal with, and our team would rather get to a difficult location than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Unwin Crescent, switch your hazards on and keep the vehicle there.

- The van turning up instead of circling rests on two things: a postcode beginning S36 6, and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it. Have both ready before you ring.

- Three replies settle the whole visit: the fuel you put in, the rough amount involved, and whether anything has been running since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

The high-pressure fuel pump spent that morning drive running on a fuel that had shed most of the protection it is built around. Diesel protects that pump, and the injectors with it, before any of your fuel burns; petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. So imagine a diesel Volkswagen Golf, filled at quarter past eight, driven in to work, and parked standing outside Penistone until you realise somewhere around eleven. Three hours of standing have changed nothing about it. The couple of miles before that changed a good deal, which is why the thing we ask is about miles rather than time. Call us. Leave the car right where it is.

## Clearing petrol from a diesel at a forecourt

A large part of the work is done at the pump, because that's where it often begins.

We work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the site's agreement, and so if you are still at Texaco that's usually where this drain gets done.

A forecourt is the only place it gets caught before the engine has run.

The few seconds between seeing the receipt and reaching for the key determine how much needs rinsing. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the car was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was drawn from your tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as your tank. It is not a calamity, and we can still deal with it where your car sits.

Attendants will usually help out pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next customer get by. Welcome the help.

Cranking the car just to roll four vehicle lengths isn't.

Tell us this much and our engineers can work with it: a diesel Renault Megane, some litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, turned off at Spar now. Time gone by isn't the thing our engineers need. Fuel sucked by your pump is.

## Can our technicians cover your end of The Green?

Those same runs get us to Penistone, Cubley, Castle Green, Bridge End and Spring Vale besides The Green, which is a residential suburb.

Our technicians still come. The names above are only the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all locations around South Yorkshire, and so an absence from the list is not an absence from the coverage.

Contact us and check rather than presuming, above all if you're on a boundary or somewhere a satnav gets wrong.

That map is the ground the page covers.

Your car does not need to travel to us. We work throughout the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Your diesel BMW 3 Series will have felt entirely ordinary on the way back from Penistone St John's Voluntary Aided Primary School. They all do, and that is the trap with petrol in a diesel instead of the other way round. Put diesel in a petrol motor and it generally will not run, so the person stops and the wear stops with them. Put petrol in a diesel and it fires up, idles and drives off as though nothing has happened — meanwhile the high-pressure pump works without the protection your fuel is meant to be giving. Nothing tells you, since from the driver's seat there's nothing to alert you about. Phone us with about how far you travelled and how hard you drove it; the second answer matters more than the first.

## Stranded on the roadside somewhere in The Green?

Not everybody has a chance to pull in somewhere sensible.

A routine call for us and not an unusual one: noticed after setting off, ended up by the verge of Green Road or in a lay-by with the hazards on.

Sit with the car if it is safe to wait in it, but clear of the vehicle if it is not.

Never fire up the engine to limp the vehicle somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling that mixture further into your fuel system.

Driving on does the car far more harm than our van heading out to an inconvenient location, and that is no bother for us.

## Run it already? Pull over, then read this

This is where the M1 comes in, under 5 miles from The Green.

A drop in power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, rather than a clean stop — and a misfuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Take the next junction that's safe, pull up there, and don't restart the car to move it.

Suppose the worst of that on a long run. Anything near the under 15 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through your filter, through your pump, through your injectors. Mention it when you call. What our engineers bring differs.

Out there happy, back gutless. If that was the trip to Penistone Recreation Ground, look at that tank. Diesel gets weakened by petrol, and thin fuel seeps past the fine clearances meant to build injection pressure — so every further mile your diesel Mercedes E-Class covered, the less pressure it held onto. Somewhere sensible, turn off, ring us.

## The Green itself

The Green is a suburban area situated near the River Don in South Yorkshire, with The Green being located at an elevation of 230 metres above sea level. The Green sits approximately 11.7 miles from Sheffield and is close to nearby places such as Penistone and Cubley. The Green is characterised by its semi-detached housing and riverside setting, with The Green being part of the wider Sheffield urban area. The Green is also relatively distant from London, at around 152.8 miles away.

## What happens when our technicians arrive with you in The Green

- Our technicians establish what went in, how much, and if your engine has run. The answers alter the work, which is why we ask before giving a price.

- The polluted fuel comes out of your tank.

- Lines flushed, filter cleared. Whatever is left later is not the thing that started the trouble.

- Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.

- It is started with clean diesel in it, and we make sure that it's running correctly.

From there, you are ready to pull away.

We do everything wherever the car has stopped, which means it never needs to go to a workshop, and if it has been noticed quickly, it's very rare for there to be permanent damage.

## The Green AdBlue removal is a separate matter

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — the engine stays off — while this issue under it is a different one altogether.

Petrol thins your diesel and removes the lubrication the fuel system relies on.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes corrosion and build-up in its place.

Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details lives on its own The Green page. Both are ours to deal with.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in The Green

One number wouldn't be honest here, since this is not one job. These are the things that move it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, compared with how much your tank takes.

- Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there sensibly?

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and if the engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range.

For the vehicle at home that is going nowhere and isn't pressing, is fine too.

What occurs next is the trouble. The engine at once pulls the petrol still resting in the fuel filter and the feed lines back round through the pump a second time, because emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it and put new diesel in, someone confident will tell you — and that tip is half right, as do it to a diesel Kia Sportage parked up, Penistone Library say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound plausible. Call us instead. Our engineers flush your system and take your filter off where the vehicle has a workable one, and that is the difference between the car being fixed and the vehicle merely starting.

## Questions our engineers hear about petrol in diesel in The Green

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around The Green?

Much of what our technicians do takes place nowhere else. So yes.

Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Cecil Penney Ltd is somewhere we are frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear whether working there's possible.

## Is there a sensible quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Proportion settles it instead of litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run.

What determines how much work is needed is if that mixture has been sucked through your fuel system — because though five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Pull in somewhere sensible, switch off, then keep the car off.

Driving is what shifts the trouble from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it's salvageable much more often than people assume, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart the car.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, draining and rinsing is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a distinct fault from a bygone era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind replaces.

Petrol stays in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no break from it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever the car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a trip to the main dealer does not come into it.

## Waiting next to it?

That engine remains off.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, switch off, and let the car stay that way.

Cold and still, a vehicle is in the best position available — and people fear this a lot more than the recovery rate warrants.

Emptying misfilled motors, The Green and the rest of South Yorkshire, wherever they are. Roadside. Forecourt. Home.
