# The Next Steps, in Order: Petrol in a Diesel Car in The Inch

Not for a moment, and not for moving it: the engine stays off. Stop there.

Has not been run? Then petrol in a diesel tends to be a straightforward drain-and-flush job wherever the vehicle has stopped — and nothing settles that as much as these next few minutes do.

What follows is the sequence from here, anywhere around The Inch you happen to be.

## Engine off: minute one with petrol in a diesel

In this sequence, all before anything else:

- Bleeding your fuel system pulls petrol from your tank towards the parts it harms, and switching your ignition on can be enough to do that. So your keys get taken out, and the ignition stays off altogether.

- A fuller tank of the same mixture is all adding diesel leaves you, because it removes nothing. So no more diesel.

- Near moving traffic? Then your hazards go on before everything else, so the vehicle is easy to see.

- The staff will usually help you roll it clear of the pump. Ask, then move it by hand — never on your engine, even for a few yards.

- Keep your receipt. It shows which fuel got in and about how much, which is the first thing we will ask.

If you were still driving when you noticed, stop somewhere safe instead of pushing on for the services — on the M8, under 10 miles from The Inch, that means the next junction. Stage one follows.

## Each The Inch fuel drain starts here: has your motor run?

One answer is what everything after this stage rests on.

Motor not run at all?

- All the petrol remains in your tank, and just there.

- Where your car stands is usually where the work is done: a drain, then a flush.

- Being here is the best case — which is the entire point of step one.

If it has been started, even for a second:

- Some petrol has left your tank already, gone through the fuel filter, and got into the fuel lines.

- On a longer run it has reached the high-pressure pump as well as your injectors.

- Lines flushed, your filter sorted, occasionally more: this job expands as the mileage does.

That line falls there because diesel protects the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors on its way through them — and petrol doesn't.

A tank of petrol, left alone, hurts nothing.

Petrol being pumped is grinding down the parts that shift it.

## What to have prepared when you call about petrol in a diesel from The Inch

Whether the technician circles or finds you depends on a little preparation.

- Your location: a postcode beginning EH16 5 works best.

- A road name is a help: Kingston Avenue, say, or whichever street you've stopped in. A car park works too.

- Car parks are found more easily by what they serve: tell us the one at Aldi, and it's straightforward.

- That it is a diesel, plus the make and model of your car.

- Say which was put in — petrol or AdBlue — since AdBlue is a separate job, with a page of its own for The Inch.

- How long the nozzle was in, or the litres from the receipt — whichever tells us how much.

- The distance it covered, and how heavily, if it ran at all.

- The owner may have to approve the work under some hire and company agreements — which is why it is quicker to settle whose motor it is before our engineers get there.

Ring 0333 366 0103 once you've got that ready — or, if the vehicle is at home, going nowhere, use .

## Waiting for a fuel drain around The Inch: what to do

Hold to these: well-meant help does the harm during the wait.

- Safety before the car. If it has stopped somewhere exposed, get yourself clear of the traffic and wait away from it. If it is safe where it stands, wait with it.

- Nobody starts it. Not a passer-by being kind, not to check it is all right, not to roll the car a few yards.

- Something from the boot, oil meant for two-strokes or injector cleaner: no additive removes that petrol.

- A home-made drain leaves your fuel already gone beyond your tank, and siphoning petrol by the road is dangerous besides.

- Not for the radio, not for the windows: your ignition remains off.

## The fuel drain, step by step, once the van arrives

- First, three questions: which fuel got in, the amount, and has it run? Those replies decide this job, so our quote follows them.

- The tank is cleared. The contaminated mix comes from that tank.

- The lines are cleaned. If it ran, that petrol has shifted beyond the tank, and the fuel lines are holding it.

- Cleared, or changed if your car has a usable one: the filter is dealt with next.

- The fuel system is primed with clean diesel.

- The start-up. With clean diesel in and the system primed, it is started and tested to be sure it runs properly.

Only when it is running on fresh diesel do our technicians head off.

The vehicle returns to normal use straight away, and long-term damage is very unusual if it has been caught early.

## Back on the road in The Inch after the fuel drain

- Once it's been started on clean fuel, there is nothing special to do: drive normally.

- Give the first miles your attention. Smoke appearing, a warning light coming on, your idle going lumpy or your throttle hesitating: pull over then call us back.

- An insurer, a fleet manager or a hire firm may ask what was done, and so keep your paperwork.

- The handle's colour is not the thing to go by next time — the label on the petrol pump is.
