# Petrol in a Diesel Car in The Leys: What Happens Now

Whatever you do, never switch your motor on, even for a moment, to shift it. Pause; leave the vehicle off.

Emptied and purged, right where it sits: that's generally all an unrun diesel with petrol in it takes. Whether it stays that simple rests on the minutes to come more than on anything else.

Wherever you are around The Leys, this is the order things run from here.

## Engine off: minute one with petrol in a diesel

In this order, and before everything else:

- Take the keys out. Even your ignition on its own can prime the system, drawing petrol out of your tank to precisely the parts it harms, and so keep the vehicle alone entirely.

- No diesel on top. More fuel in removes none of the petrol — it just makes you with extra of the same mixture.

- Near moving traffic? Then the hazards go on before anything else, and so the car is simple to see.

- However short the way, starting it to shift it is the thing to avoid. At a forecourt, push the car away from the pump by hand instead, then ask the staff to help.

- Keep your receipt: the fuel and the rough amount are written on it, and they are what our engineers ask about first.

Still driving when you noticed? Come off the M6 at the next exit if that is where you are, under 3 miles from The Leys, and pull over somewhere sensible instead of pressing on to the services. Then start at step one.

## The fork in each The Leys fuel drain: has it run yet?

What happens next turns on one answer, and just one.

If it has never been started:

- Nowhere but that tank: that is where the petrol still is.

- A drain and flush, on the spot, is usually all of that.

- Being here is as good as it gets — which is the whole point of stage one.

Engine run, even briefly?

- The fuel lines and the filter already hold petrol drawn from that tank.

- The high-pressure fuel pump as well as your injectors see it too on a bigger run.

- Lines flushed, the fuel filter sorted, occasionally more: this job expands as the mileage does.

Petrol does not lubricate. Diesel does, oiling the high-pressure pump and injectors as it passes through, which is why the line sits where it does.

In that tank, left alone, petrol does no harm.

The components that shift it are wearing the moment petrol is being pumped.

## Before you call about petrol in a diesel around The Leys: what we need

A little planning is the difference between a technician that finds you and a van that circles.

- Where you have stopped. A postcode starting WS10 8 is the best start.

- Give the road — St. Lawrence Way or wherever you have pulled up — or the car park.

- Name a car park by what it serves — the one outside Asda, for example — and it is much easier to find.

- That it is a diesel, plus the make and model of your vehicle.

- Petrol or AdBlue? Tell us which. They are separate jobs, and AdBlue has its own The Leys page.

- How long the nozzle was in, or the litres from the receipt — either tells us how much.

- Has it run? If so, say how far it got, and the way it was driven.

- The owner may have to authorise this work under some hire and company contracts — which is why it is faster to settle whose motor it is before our engineers arrive.

Then phone 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — your car is at home and going nowhere — works as well.

## The Leys fuel drain on its way? While you wait

Hold to these: kindly meant help causes the damage during the wait.

- Wait with your car if it's safe where it is — but if it has stopped somewhere unsafe, you come first: away from the traffic, waiting apart from it.

- No one starts it. Not a passer-by being helpful, not to check it is all right, not to roll the car a couple of yards.

- Additives stay in the boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil draw none of that petrol out a second time.

- Clearing it yourself is not the answer: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and your fuel beyond your tank remains put anyway.

- Leave your ignition off — your windows and the radio too.

## When the van arrives: your fuel drain, step by step

- Three questions. What was put in, how much, and if it's run. The answers shape this job, which is why the quote comes after them and not before.

- Next the tank is cleared, so the polluted fuel comes out.

- Cleaning the lines comes next, because a car that ran has petrol past your tank, in the lines themselves.

- Cleaned, or swapped if your car has a serviceable one: the fuel filter is seen to next.

- Clean diesel in, and the system primed.

- Our engineers fire it up only after new diesel has gone in and bled the system, then make sure that it's running smoothly.

Only once it is running on clean diesel do our engineers leave.

Permanent damage is very unusual if it has been noticed quickly, so the car can go right back to normal use.

## Once your fuel drain is done: driving around The Leys a second time

- Started on new diesel, it needs nothing special of you. Simply drive normally.

- Give the first miles your attention. Smoke showing, a warning light coming on, your idle going lumpy or the throttle stumbling: pull over and ring us back.

- Hold on to the documents. A hire firm, a fleet manager or an insurer may ask what was done.

- The handle's colour is not the thing to go by next time — the label on the petrol pump is.

Stage one is the whole of it: motor off, keys out, receipt in your pocket. From there Petrol in Diesel carries on, at the forecourt, at the roadside or on your drive.
