# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in The Murray? Don't Start It

Do not fire up the engine. If the petrol is still inside that tank and the motor has not yet turned over, a tank drain is almost always all it needs — and that's determined in the coming few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, all over The Murray and the rest of South Lanarkshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive.

Call us and we can explain what happens after that before you do much else.

## What now? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

- Don't fire it up — and do not rely on it when it starts. That is the part people get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine fed diesel generally just will not run, and so the motorist stops and the wear ends with them. A diesel filled with petrol generally starts, idles and pulls away quite happily for a couple of miles. It's not okay. It is wearing that fuel system whenever you drive.

- Diesel burns, and before it combusts it greases — the injection pump, the injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the ignition be as well: switching it on is frequently enough to prime the system, and priming draws petrol from the tank into precisely those parts.

- Do not water down it. Diesel put on top clears nothing, so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The grade makes no difference.

- Sit tight if it is safe to. Hazards on, engine off, leave the vehicle. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Heathery Knowe, anywhere — an awkward location for us beats a started engine, and nothing is quicker for us to deal with than a vehicle that never moved.

- Our van turning up instead of circling hinges on two things: a postcode beginning G75 0, and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it. Get both ready before you ring.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Expect three things — what went in, roughly how much, plus whether the motor has been started. Your responses determine everything that happens next.

## On a forecourt: draining petrol from your diesel

Pumps are where the work often begins, and where a large portion of it finishes.

If you are still at the forecourt at Morrisons, that is typically where this drain happens — we work on station forecourts all the time, with the site's consent.

Before your engine has fired — a garage is the one location the mistake ends up halted.

Fuel pulled out of your tank and through the fuel filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when the engine is switched on and your car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers your filter and the lines as well as that tank. That's still not a disaster, and our technicians sort it out where your car is. What decides it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after your receipt was checked.

The attendants will usually offer to roll the car out from the petrol pump so the next motorist can get through. It is worth doing.

Moving the car four bays doesn't warrant cranking it.

Simple, these ones, and the reason is the distance: a mile at gentle throttle draws hardly any fuel. Petrol into a diesel Renault Clio somewhere in The Murray, a boot loaded with shopping, and you stuck at Lidl — phone. Leaving that space is not worth another start. That tank gets emptied where it sits, the lines rinsed, fresh diesel in, and you head home.

## Areas we reach around The Murray

Those same trips carry us to Whitehills, West Mains, Greenhills, East Kilbride and Birniehill as well as The Murray, which is a residential suburb.

Not on this list? It means nothing. The places above are only the closest few, and most locations in South Lanarkshire have a page of their own somewhere on this site.

Contact us to ask rather than guessing — borders especially, and wherever your satnav tends to misread.

The patch this page spans is on this map.

Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: the lot is ground our engineers cover, and none of it needs your car to come to us.

Nothing alerts you, since from the driver's seat there's nothing to be warned about. Your diesel Peugeot 308 will have felt entirely ordinary on the way back from the local primary school, and they all do — which is the snag with petrol in a diesel instead of the reverse. Diesel in a petrol car mostly refuses to run, stopping the motorist and stopping the damage with them. Petrol in a diesel starts, ticks over, drives off as though nothing had happened, and all the while your pump works without the protection its fuel is meant to supply. Tell us about how far, and how hard. The harder matters more.

## Stranded at the kerbside around The Murray

The chance to pull in somewhere safe does not come to everybody.

If you worked it out after setting off and finished up by the verge beside The Murray Road, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards going, that's a common call for us instead of a rare one.

Fine where you are? Sit by it. Not safe? Get out and away from it.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that blend further into the fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere safer.

However awkward the place, it's no problem for us to come to it, and that is far better for the vehicle than driving on.

## Driven it already? Pull in, and read this

This is where the M74 comes in — under 10 miles away from The Murray.

A misfuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, and the signs when they come are usually a drop in power, a lumpy idle and smoke instead of a neat stop.

Take the next exit that's safe, stop there, and never start the vehicle to reposition.

It affects what we bring, so tell us when you phone: on a longer trip — anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city — assume the petrol has been through the filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

Pull in somewhere sensible, turn off then call us. Normal on the way out to Livingstone Drive, flat on the way back? Then look at your tank. Petrol dilutes diesel; thinner fuel seeps past the tightly fitted parts that build injection pressure; and the farther the diesel Dacia Duster went, the less of that pressure it held.

## Where is The Murray?

The Murray is a suburban area situated on the riverside in South Lanarkshire, with a mix of terraced housing and local amenities. The Murray sits near the city of Glasgow, approximately 8 miles from the city centre, and is close to nearby places such as Whitehills and Greenhills. The Murray has a population of around 6334 people and is located at an elevation of 191 metres. The Murray is part of the wider Glasgow urban area, with easy access to the city's facilities and services.

## When we reach you around The Murray: what we do

- Our technicians establish what got in, how much, and whether your engine has run. The responses shape the work, which is why we ask before quoting.

- Away comes the tainted fuel.

- What is left in your system shouldn't be what created the issue, and so the lines get rinsed and the fuel filter cleaned.

- New diesel goes in, and then the system gets primed.

- The motor is started and tested to be sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

From that point, you are ready to set off.

Everything is done where the car is, so it never needs to go to a workshop, and when it has been spotted quickly, lasting damage is very uncommon.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, around The Murray?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — the motor remains off — while the problem under it is a distinct one altogether.

The lubrication a fuel system relies on gets taken away by petrol, which dilutes the diesel.

Rust and residue are what a diesel tank gets instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There is a separate The Murray page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

Hire car or company car? Ring them before you call us — some agreements want the hire firm to sign off the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal faster than sorting it afterwards. Then call us about the Ford Fiesta close to The Murray Square shops, and do not worry that you cannot say how full that tank was. Almost nobody can, in a car they collected two days ago, and we work it out there. The reason we ask is that petrol in a diesel does its damage as a ratio: the same few litres in a nearly empty tank is a far stronger blend than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger that mixture, the more it rattles, smokes and goes flat.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost in The Murray

What changes the price is listed below, as the job is not one job and our engineers can't truthfully put a single price on this page.

- This is the key one: whether the engine has been started, or driven.

- Wrong fuel in, against what your tank takes — that ratio.

- Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there sensibly?

Tell us what your car is, how much went in, and whether your engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range.

Not urgent, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

By now your tank is the least of that. Run a diesel and the mixture goes into your filter, into your lines, into your pump, into the rail — and none of that leaves with that tank contents. A diesel Vauxhall Insignia that made it near The Murray Owen Centre wants its system purged. Emptying is not the same thing.

## Petrol in diesel: common queries in The Murray

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around The Murray?

Yes, and it is where a fair share of this work gets done.

We attend BP and the other forecourts locally regularly, with the owner's consent — tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Litres are not the measure. Ratio is, and far more than either, it matters whether anything has been run.

What determines how much work is needed is whether that blend has been sucked through your fuel system — because although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

## I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Turn off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop.

Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the issue out of the tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays recoverable far more commonly than motorists expect.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, draining and flushing is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

What's likelier to start a dispute is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to remain off.

## Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a distinct problem and it does not put back what petrol has thinned.

Petrol remains in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and cleaned wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

## Standing next to it?

Never turn your engine back on.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere sensible, switch off, then let the car stay that way.

This is recoverable from much more often than people assume, and a parked, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.

Across South Lanarkshire and around The Murray: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
