# The Next Steps, in Order: Petrol in a Diesel Car in The Park

Stop, and keep the engine off — not on, and not for a moment to move the car.

The next few minutes decide it far more than anything else: petrol in a diesel that has not run usually comes down to draining and cleaning, right there.

Wherever you are around The Park, this is how things go from here.

## Petrol in a diesel? What to do in minute one

Go through the following in order, before you do anything else.

- Pull your keys out. Even the ignition on its own can prime the system, drawing petrol out of the tank to exactly the components it damages, so keep the car alone completely.

- Topping up with diesel seems like it dilutes the issue. It doesn't: nothing gets out, and that tank simply holds more of the same.

- Hazard lights on. If you are at all close to moving traffic, make your car easy to see before you do anything else.

- By hand, never under your engine: that is how it comes off the pump. Get the forecourt attendants to help you push, however short the miles.

- Keep the receipt. It shows which fuel got in plus roughly how much, which is the first thing we will ask.

Still driving when you noticed? Come off the M60 at the next exit if that is where you are, under 15 miles from The Park, and pull over somewhere safe and not pushing on to the services. Then start at stage one.

## The fork in each The Park fuel drain: has it run yet?

One answer is what everything after this stage rests on.

Engine never run at all?

- That petrol is still in the tank and nowhere else.

- The job is a drain and a flush, usually done where your car is.

- This, here, is the best position to be in, and the reason step one counts.

If it has been started, even for a moment:

- Some petrol has left your tank by now, gone through the filter, and reached the lines.

- A longer run carries it right through to the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors.

- The farther it went, the larger this job — your lines, your filter, and sometimes more besides.

The reason the line falls there: diesel protects the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors as it flows through them, and petrol doesn't.

Petrol resting in a tank harms nothing.

Petrol being pumped is grinding down the parts that move the car.

## Before you call about petrol in a diesel in The Park: what our engineers need

Whether the technician circles or finds you depends on a little planning.

- Your whereabouts: a postcode beginning SK17 9 works best.

- Wherever you have parked, the road's name is useful — whether that's Park Road or somewhere else — and so does the name of a car park.

- Car parks are found more easily by what they serve: say the one outside Waitrose, and it is straightforward.

- Make and model of your vehicle, and the fact it's a diesel.

- Which got in counts: AdBlue is a separate job from petrol, plus The Park has a page for it. So say.

- The quantity: your receipt's litres, or otherwise how long you held the nozzle in.

- The distance it covered, and how hard, if it has run at all.

- Whose car it is. Some hire or company agreements want the owner to authorise this work, and that is easier settled before our technicians get there than after.

Then call 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — the car is at home and going nowhere — works as well.

## Waiting for a fuel drain around The Park: what to do

The wait is where well-intended help does the harm. Stick to these.

- Stay with your car if it is safe where it is — but if it has stopped somewhere dangerous, you come first: away from the traffic, waiting apart from it.

- Not to roll it a few yards, not to check it is all right, not for a passer-by's favour: nobody starts it.

- No additives. Two-stroke oil, injector cleaner, anything from the boot — none of that takes that petrol back out.

- No DIY draining. Siphoning petrol into a can at the roadside is hazardous, and it leaves your fuel that has by now gone beyond that tank.

- The ignition stays off. Even for your radio or the windows.

## When the van arrives: your fuel drain, step by step

- Three questions. What was put in, how much, and whether it has run. The replies decide the job, which is why our price comes after them and not before.

- Out of your tank comes the polluted mixture: your tank is cleared.

- Purging the fuel lines comes next, since a motor that ran has petrol past the tank, inside the lines themselves.

- Where your car has a workable filter, it is changed; if not, cleared.

- Priming follows after clean diesel is in.

- Starting it. After the fuel system is primed with clean diesel, our engineers start the car and make sure it runs smoothly.

Only once it is running on new diesel do our engineers leave.

It's very rare for a vehicle caught quickly to be left with lasting damage, and normal use starts again straight away.

## Once your fuel drain is done: driving in The Park a second time

- Drive normally. There is nothing special to do once it's been started on clean fuel.

- Pull over and ring us back if anything seems wrong early on — a light on your dash, smoke from the exhaust, an idle that runs rough, or a throttle with a dead spot.

- The work may come up later with a hire company, an insurer or a fleet manager. Keep your paperwork.

- Next time, go by the petrol pump's label rather than the colour of its handle.
