# Petrol in a Diesel Car in The Point

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, throughout The Point and the remainder of Devon. The very first thing to do is not to turn on your engine. While your engine has not yet run and the petrol is still inside that tank, a tank drain is almost always all it requires, and the coming few minutes settle that, not how much went in.

We shall tell you what the following stage will be. Call us — this goes before everything else.

## Now what? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

- While you drive, the pump and your injectors wear. That's why you don't crank it, and why you never rely on it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel in particular — the point drivers get wrong — is that it drives off fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine typically can't run at all, which stops the person and stops the wear with them. This one lets you keep going.

- Leave the car's ignition alone too. Diesel does two roles: it combusts, and before it ignites it greases the high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Flicking the ignition on is commonly all it takes to prime the system, which carries that petrol out of your tank then into just those components.

- That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system copes with petrol by percentage. It does not. Tip diesel on top and nothing at all is removed; what you end with is a larger tank of the same mixture. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is still petrol.

- Sit tight if it is sensible to. Hazards on, engine off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Camperdown Terrace, anywhere — a tricky location for us trumps a started motor, and nothing is easier for us to handle than a vehicle that never shifted.

- The van arriving instead of circling turns on two things: a postcode that starts EX8 1, and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it. Get both prepared before you dial.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Expect three questions — what went in, approximately how many litres, plus whether the motor has been turned over. Those answers determine all that comes after.

The high-pressure fuel pump spent that morning run working on a fluid that had lost most of the protection it is made for. Diesel lubricates that pump, and the fuel injectors with it, before any of your fuel combusts; petrol does the burning and none of the lubricating. So imagine a diesel Renault Megane, filled at quarter past eight, taken in to work, and parked sitting outside Exmouth till you realise at about eleven. Three hours of sitting have altered nothing about it. The couple of miles before that altered plenty, which is why the thing our engineers put to you is about distance not hours. Phone. Keep the vehicle just where it stands.

## Draining petrol from your diesel at a forecourt

Much of this work begins at a pump, which means a good part of that gets finished there.

We operate on garage forecourts all the time, with the site's consent, so if you are still at Shell that is generally where this drain happens.

A forecourt is the one location this is stopped before your motor has started.

Fuel sucked out of the tank and through the filter, right to your high-pressure pump, is what happens when your engine is fired up and your car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers your filter and the lines along with that tank. That is still not a catastrophe, and our technicians sort it out where your car sits. What settles it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

Push it out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they normally will. The next motorist gets through the petrol pump, and that is worth doing.

Rolling it four bays does not justify firing the motor.

## The Point and the places next to it

Exmouth, Cockwood, Starcross, Withycombe Raleigh, Middlewood — every one of these on our journeys that bring us out to The Point as well, a residential suburb.

Not on this list? It means nothing. The places above are only the closest few, and the majority of locations around Devon have a page of their own somewhere on the site.

Assuming is the habit to skip, especially on the border or anywhere your phone fails. Call us to ask.

That map marks the ground this page covers.

The lot is ground we cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You don't move the vehicle anywhere.

## Stuck by the roadside near The Point

Not everyone has the chance to pull in somewhere safe.

If you realised after setting off and finished up along the verge of Shelly Reach, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights going, that is a normal call for us instead of an unusual one.

Fine where you are? Wait by it. Not okay? Step out and away from it.

Never start it up to reach a safer place. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags that blend deeper into your fuel system.

We'll bring the van to a tricky place without any trouble, and for your car that's far better than carrying on.

Chance the journey home from The Grove? No. It will fire up and it will pull away perfectly well, which is the issue — a diesel on a weakened tank acts usually while wearing the parts the fuel should be protecting. Park the Peugeot 308 then call us.

## A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

under 10 miles from The Point, the local M5 is what matters now.

Lost power, an uneven idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they appear, rather than a tidy stop — and a misfuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Get off at the first safe junction, turn off, and do not restart it to reposition.

It alters what our technicians bring, so tell us when you call: on a longer run — anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through your filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

Never drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse while the car waits, since a diesel Nissan Qashqai left outside Imperial Recreation Ground is doing none of what it did on the way there. Your pump has stopped turning.

## About The Point

The Point is a coastal suburban area in Devon, situated near the mouth of the Exe Estuary, with Exmouth and Cockwood to the south. The Point has a low elevation of around 4 metres, reflecting its coastal setting. The Point is characterized by its terraced housing and is located close to the city of Exeter, approximately 8.7 miles away.

## Our job around The Point, step by step

- The answers shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting: what went in, how much of it, and if your motor has run.

- Your tank gets cleared completely.

- Fuel lines are rinsed through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in the system that created any of this.

- The system gets bled, on new diesel.

- It is fired up with clean diesel in it, and our technicians check that it's running correctly.

After that it's ready to drive away.

There's no need for a garage at any point, as the work is all done where the car is, and when it is spotted soon, permanent damage is very uncommon.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, around The Point?

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the first step is unchanged — your engine remains off — while this fault underneath it's a separate one altogether.

Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and takes away the protection your fuel system depends on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

Both are ours. There is a separate The Point page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

Petrol in a diesel does its harm as a proportion, which is the reason we ask at all: the same few litres resting in a nearly empty tank make a far stronger mixture than they would in a full one. And petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure — the opposite of what a diesel wants — so a stronger blend knocks more, smokes more, goes flatter. None of which means you need an answer ready. Almost no one knows how full the tank was in a motor picked up two days ago, and our engineers work that out on the spot. Do ring the hire or company firm first, though: some contracts want them to sign off the work, and that is far quicker settled before than after. Then call us about the Ford Focus by Exmouth Rugby Club.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in The Point?

Frankly, no single price fits on a page like this. This job differs. Here is what varies it:

- This is the key one: whether your motor has been run, or driven.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- The type of fluid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.

- Access: the car's position, and if working on it there is safe for a technician.

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear and not as a range.

Not pressing, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then does the job.

A few streets, then it stopped. Throttle soft, idle ragged, and your diesel Dacia Duster is parked up near Exmouth Sea Wall. The engine isn't giving up — that softness is fuel that will not build pressure. There's no light on the dash for it, and so cars like yours usually get driven once more before somebody picks up the phone. Please don't. Off, and call us.

## Questions our technicians get about petrol in diesel in The Point

## At a petrol station in The Point, can you do a fuel drain there?

A big portion of this work takes place there, so yes.

Often, provided the site consents: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that place is something we answer there and then.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether the motor has run counts a lot more, though the ratio matters too, rather than the litres.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is if that mixture has been sucked through the fuel system.

## I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Pull over somewhere safe, switch off, then leave it off.

It is salvageable far more regularly than people assume, even though driving is what shifts the problem from the tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

It is not a change, and so a drain then flush carried out correctly does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

What is likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to stay off.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has weakened is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a separate issue. So no.

That tank still has petrol in it later, and your pump still has to live with it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There's no need to bring it to a dealership, as our technicians drain and flush your car wherever it is.

## Is your car still with you?

Your engine stays off.

Switch it off somewhere sensible and leave it off, if you have already driven it.

A stationary, cold vehicle is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more regularly than motorists expect.
