# Petrol in a Diesel Car in The Quarter

With your tank still holding the fuel and the engine not yet turned over, nearly every job requires only a drain, so leave the engine off. That outcome is decided in the minutes right after the fill-up, and not by the amount that was put in. Throughout The Quarter and the remainder of Kent, Petrol in Diesel drains the vehicle and flushes it where it is, whether by a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt.

Call us before everything else happens, and you'll learn what follows after that.

## What now? Petrol in a diesel, step by step

- Feed a petrol engine diesel and it will normally refuse to run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it ticks over, it drives off — fine enough for several miles. Most people have that reversed, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So don't crank it. And if started, don't trust it: the fuel system is grinding while you drive.

- Two tasks, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps that injection pump and injectors greased. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why the car's ignition stays off as well — turn it on and you frequently prime the system, and that's petrol exiting the tank for exactly those parts.

- Never dilute it. Diesel put on top clears nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The octane makes no difference.

- Sit tight if it is wise to. Hazards on, motor off, keep the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Pinnock Lane, anywhere — an odd location for us is better than a started engine, and nothing is simpler for us to sort out than a car that never moved.

- Check where you are before ringing. A postcode that starts TN12 0, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than turning up.

- Phone 0333 366 0103. Let us know what was put in, about how much, plus if the engine has run. Those three details settle the full job.

## Can petrol be taken from a diesel on the forecourt?

Pumps are where the job usually kicks off, and where a big part of it closes.

Our technicians work on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the station's agreement, and so if you're still at Esso that is normally where the drain happens.

Nowhere other than a garage can the mistake be spotted with your motor still unrun.

Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the car was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was pulled from the tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump. That is not a calamity, and we can still sort it out where it sits. It does mean your lines and your filter need cleaning as well as that tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between reading your receipt and reaching for your key.

The attendants will generally happily push the car clear of the petrol pump so the next motorist can get by. That is worth doing.

Starting the car to shift four vehicle lengths isn't.

Each start primes that fuel system and pulls more of the mix out of your tank and on to the pump — which is why a car shunted twice into a better spot has quietly turned into a worse job than one left precisely where it stopped. So if our technicians can't work beside your diesel Nissan Qashqai, our technicians roll the vehicle without starting it. None of that is pedantry about a couple of seconds of running. Car parks like the one outside Spar our engineers work in regularly, and the fuel is seldom the tricky part: that bay is. Cars either side, a trolley shelter behind, at times a height bar at the entrance settling if our van can reach you at all. Tell us how hemmed in you are, and which way your car points.

## Coverage around The Quarter

The Quarter is a residential suburb, so we head out to it and to the villages by it on the same trips: Staplehurst, Knox Bridge, Marden Thorn, Sinkhurst Green and Knowles Hill.

If yours isn't on the list it doesn't mean we don't come — there are dedicated pages for the majority of places in Kent, and the ones named above are just the closest neighbours.

Near a border, or somewhere your satnav misreads? Ring us to enquire instead of assuming.

The area this page spans appears on the map.

Every bit of that is territory we serve: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You do not drive the vehicle anywhere.

A passer-by will urge you to move it out of the gateway and sort it out later. Don't. A misfuelled diesel Mercedes C-Class on the zig-zags outside Staplehurst School is a hassle; the same motor started three more times to be courteous is a fuel system instead of a tank. Each restart primes your lines and pulls more petrol through your filter then into the pump. Leave it there, let everyone grumble, then give us a call.

## The Quarter: stranded wherever you parked

Not everyone gets a chance to pull in anywhere safe.

A routine call for us instead of a rare one: worked out after setting off, landed by the verge on Hanmer Way or in a lay-by with your hazards flashing.

Fine there? Stay beside it. Not safe? Step out and clear of it.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol draws that blend further into the fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the motor doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better.

A technician heading to an awkward place is no bother for us, and it's much better for the vehicle than carrying on.

What we'll want to know is whether that trip there was brief and cold, since that is where petrol is least able to burn fully — and whatever does not burn can get past the rings and into the engine oil. Right up to the moment somebody takes it home, a diesel Audi A3 sitting in the parking area outside The Kings Head carrying a tank of petrol in it is an easy job. Nothing worsens while it waits, and so leave the vehicle there overnight then call us next morning.

## Petrol in a diesel, but the vehicle has moved

The local M20 is the one which matters now, and it runs under 10 miles from The Quarter.

A drop in power, a lumpy idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they appear, rather than a neat stop — and a misfilled diesel will usually get you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

Don't start it to reposition. Get off at the first safe junction then switch off.

Suppose the worst of it on a long run. Anything near the under 25 miles to the closest city, and the petrol has been through the fuel filter, through your pump, through the injectors. Tell us when you ring. What we bring changes.

## About The Quarter

The Quarter is a suburban area in Kent, situated inland at an elevation of 24 metres, and is located near the villages of Staplehurst and Marden Thorn. The Quarter sits approximately 38 miles from London and 24 miles from Canterbury, making it a commuter base for those working in the city. The Quarter has a population of around 1161 people and is characterised by semi-detached housing. The Quarter is part of the wider landscape of the Weald of Kent, a region of rolling hills and woodland.

## When we get to you around The Quarter: what follows

- The replies shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing: what was put in, how much of that, and whether your motor has run.

- That tank gets drained completely.

- Fuel lines are rinsed through and the filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that caused any of this.

- Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.

- The motor is fired up and tested to confirm it runs correctly on new diesel.

From there, you are ready to set off.

There is no need to go to a garage at any stage, as the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it's noticed soon, lasting damage is very uncommon.

## A separate problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around The Quarter

If what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first step is unchanged — do not start it — but the issue isn't.

Diluted diesel, and no lubrication left for your fuel system that relies on it. That is petrol.

Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes rust and deposits.

We deal with both, and AdBlue removal around The Quarter has its own page with the details — including why it is often the more significant of the two.

Most of these occur somewhere unfamiliar, and the cause is mechanical instead of sloppy — almost no resistance meets a narrower petrol nozzle entering a modern diesel filler neck. Two days into a diesel Citroen C3, a fill-up near Staplehurst Library that you did not think about? Phone us from where you are. Courtesy and hire cars go further before anyone spots it, and the further they go, the more petrol arrives at your injectors.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost around The Quarter

What moves the price is laid out below, because this job is not one job and our engineers cannot honestly put a single number on this page.

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, measured against how much the tank takes.

- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.

- Whether our van can sensibly reach your car and work on it, which depends on where your vehicle is.

A clear answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the amount, and whether it has run.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is ideal for that.

Drain it then put fresh diesel in — that is the suggestion you will get, usually from somebody sure of themselves, and it is half right. Do exactly that to a diesel Kia Sportage by Staplehurst Village Centre and it would start, which is what makes the suggestion sound sensible. What takes place next is the issue: your engine straight away pulls the petrol still waiting in your filter and the feed lines straight back through your pump, since emptying a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Ring us instead. Our technicians flush your circuit and take the fuel filter off where the vehicle has a working one, which is the difference between the car being put right and your car only starting.

## The Quarter drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Fuel drains on a The Quarter petrol station forecourt

Yes — forecourts are where a good part of this takes place.

We attend Murco and the other forecourts nearby all the time, with the site's permission — tell us which one you're at when you call and we'll tell you whether our technicians can work there.

## Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

It depends on the proportion instead of the litres, and far more on whether the engine has run.

What decides how much work is needed is if that mixture has been drawn through the system — because though five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one, either way that's the query.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and keep it off.

Driving shifts the issue along — out of your tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really useful thing left to you isn't restarting it.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain and flush done to a proper standard, which is no change at all.

What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to remain off.

## Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

What petrol has weakened isn't restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a distinct fault. So no.

Afterwards? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Not at all. We drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a dealership.

## You, and your vehicle, still together?

The motor remains off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting it after that.

Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Motorists fear this a lot more than they need to.
