# Thrumpton: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not turned on the engine as yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing more is nearly always what a car requires while the fuel is still in your tank and the engine has not yet been started, which is why it is the coming few minutes that count, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the vehicle wherever it has ended up in Thrumpton or the remainder of Nottinghamshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and flushes it there.

Just one ring our way will be plenty: our engineers can tell you what comes from here. Do this straight away.

## Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Whenever you drive, the pump and the injectors wear. That's why you do not fire it up, and why you do not believe it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel especially — the point drivers get wrong — is that it pulls away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine usually will not run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the damage with them. This one lets you carry on.

- Leave your ignition be also. Diesel has two jobs: it combusts, and before it combusts it protects that high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol handles the first but not the second. Flicking your ignition on is often enough to prime the system, which pulls this petrol out of the tank and into just those components.

- Topping up takes out nothing. It gives you a larger tank of the same mix, since a diesel fuel system does not accept petrol by percentage as that guidance implies — so don't put diesel on top to dilute it. Grade is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.

- We would rather get to a difficult location than have it started — so if you reasonably can, stay still. Nothing is quicker to sort out than a car that hasn't shifted. On the verge on Newton Street, that means hazards on then leave it.

- Get your location prepared before you dial. A postcode that starts DN22 7 and whatever is closest to you with a label on it is the difference between a van arriving and a van circling.

- What was put in, roughly how much, and also if the engine has run — those three facts shape the entire call-out. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Quarter past eight. A quick top-up on the trip in. Somewhere around eleven it dawns on you, and by then the diesel Volkswagen Golf has sat outside Retford for three hours. Ring us then keep it where it sits. What is key is the run in, because diesel both burns and — before that — lubricates your pump and the injectors, while petrol only ever combusts. Those few miles worked your pump on a fluid drained of a lot of its protection, and no volume of standing in a car park adds any of that back. Hence the thing we ask about mileage rather than hours sitting, and hence the advice to leave the keys be till our engineers turn up.

## Can petrol be taken out of your diesel at a forecourt?

A large chunk of this work ends up done at the pump, because that is where it usually starts.

Still at Esso? Then that's usually where it takes place. Garage forecourts are everyday for us, with the permission of the owner.

Before the engine has fired — the forecourt is the one setting the mistake gets spotted.

The few seconds between reading the receipt and reaching for the keys determine how much needs cleaning. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from that tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means your lines and the filter need flushing as well as that tank. It is not a calamity, and our technicians can still put it right where the car sits.

The attendants will usually offer to wheel the vehicle clear of the petrol pump so the next motorist can get by. It is worth doing.

Cranking it just to roll four vehicle lengths is not.

Any start primes that fuel system and draws more of the mix out of your tank and on to your pump — which is why a car moved twice into a nicer bay has gradually grown into a worse job than one left exactly where it stopped. So when our engineers can't work next to the diesel Renault Clio, our engineers move it without firing it. None of that is fussiness about a couple of seconds of running. Car parks like the one outside Lidl we work in regularly, and your fuel is seldom the awkward part: the bay is. Motors either side, a trolley shelter behind, sometimes a height limit at the way in deciding if our van gets to you at all. Tell us how hemmed in you are, and which way your car faces.

## Service in Thrumpton

Newtown, South Retford, White Houses, West Field, Ordsall — every one of those on our trips that bring us over to Thrumpton too, a residential suburb.

If yours isn't on the list it does not mean we do not come — there are pages for most locations in Nottinghamshire, and the ones named above are simply the nearest neighbours.

Call us to ask instead of guessing — county lines especially, and anywhere your phone may struggle with.

This map is the patch this page covers.

Roadside, forecourt, private drive, car park: all of it is territory our engineers work on, and none of that requires your car to travel to us.

Every restart primes the fuel lines and draws more petrol through your filter and into your pump. So a misfuelled diesel Skoda Octavia on the zig-zags outside Thrumpton Primary Academy is an inconvenience, whereas the same motor started three more times to be courteous is a fuel system and not a tank. Somebody will advise you to shift the vehicle out of that gateway and deal with it later. Do not. Stay put, let everyone moan, and ring us.

## Stopped by the roadside somewhere around Thrumpton?

Some drivers get no sensible place to pull over at all.

If you noticed after setting off and landed by the verge of Whinney Moor Lane, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazards on, that's a common call for us and not an unusual one.

Clear of the motor while it isn't wise to wait there, by it when it is.

Don't restart your motor to nurse the vehicle somewhere better — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling that mix further into the fuel system.

Driving on causes the car far more harm than our van heading out to an awkward spot, and that's no problem for us.

Three replies decide much of the work: what got in, roughly how much, and whether the engine has run since. We ask for them as soon as we get to the car in the car park at The Elms Hotel. Next the contaminated blend comes out of the tank, your lines are rinsed, and where your Peugeot 308 has a serviceable filter, it comes off. After fresh diesel is in and your system primed, our technicians fire it up and confirm it runs smoothly before you set off.

## Run it already? Stop, then read below

This is where your Doncaster By-Pass comes in, under 10 miles from Thrumpton.

Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power ebbs away, your idle turns rough, and there may be smoke.

Take the next junction that is sensible, pull up there, and do not restart the vehicle to move it.

Presume the worst of it on a long run. Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the nearest city, and the mixture has been through your filter, through the pump, through your injectors. Tell us when you call. What our engineers bring changes.

Thrumpton is also within commuting distance of larger cities, being around 129.3 miles from London.

## Our call-out around Thrumpton, step by step

- We ask first, price after. What was put in? How much? Has the engine run? Those answers change what the work really is.

- The tainted mixture comes from the tank.

- Lines rinsed, filter cleared. Whatever is left after that is not the thing that caused the problem.

- Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.

- It's started with new diesel in it, and our technicians make sure that it is running properly.

That has the car ready to set off.

Our technicians do everything wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been spotted early, it is very rare for there to be permanent damage.

## A different job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Thrumpton

The fault is not the same, though the opening instruction is — never fire it up — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

Petrol weakens your diesel and takes away the protection your fuel system relies on.

Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes rust and deposits.

Both are ours. There is a separate Thrumpton page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Thrumpton?

One number wouldn't be honest here, as this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:

- Whether your motor has been started or driven. This is the main one.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, judged against how much the tank holds.

- Whether it is petrol or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there sensibly?

A firm answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the amount, and if it has run.

If it's not pressing — the car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

By now the tank is the least of that. Run a diesel and the blend goes into your filter, into the fuel lines, into the pump, into the rail — and none of that leaves with the tank contents. A diesel BMW 1 Series that made it near Retford Little Theatre needs its circuit cleared. Draining is not the same thing.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Thrumpton drivers

## I'm on a forecourt in Thrumpton. Can you drain the car on the spot?

A large part of this work takes place there, so yes.

Tell us which one you're at when you ring and we will tell you if we can work there. With the owner's consent we attend BP and the other forecourts nearby all the time.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It hinges on the ratio rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether your engine has run.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is if that blend has been sucked through the system.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Somewhere safe, then stop, then switch off and keep it off.

It is salvageable far more frequently than people assume, even though driving is what shifts the trouble from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty survives a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no change at all.

Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

## Two-stroke oil in the tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a distinct problem from a different era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind restores.

That tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and the pump still has to put up with it.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

## Is your car still with you?

Shut off is how the car remains.

If you have already driven the car, pull over somewhere sensible, turn it off then leave it off.

Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. Motorists fear this a lot more than they need to.

Emptying misfilled motors, Thrumpton and the rest of Nottinghamshire, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
