# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Thurgoland

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled cars where they sit, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, all over Thurgoland and the rest of South Yorkshire. The first thing to do is not to fire up the motor. While your engine has not been started and the fuel is still sitting in the tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it requires, and the coming few minutes decide that, not how much went in.

Contact us so our technicians shall explain what happens next before you attempt much else.

## What to try first about petrol in a diesel

- Never crank it — and do not believe it if it does start. That is the part drivers get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol engine filled with diesel typically just will not run, so the driver stops and the damage ends with them. A diesel given petrol generally starts, ticks over and pulls away just fine for several miles. It's not fine. It is wearing your fuel system as you drive.

- Leave the car's ignition alone as well. Diesel has two tasks: it combusts, and before it combusts it protects the high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Switching the ignition on is often enough to prime that system, which draws that petrol out of the tank and into precisely those parts.

- Never add diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system will not tolerate petrol by percentage the way that advice suggests, and topping up gets rid of nothing — it simply leaves you a larger tank of the same mix. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.

- Remain where you are if you reasonably can. A car that has never shifted is the simplest one to handle, and we would rather come to a tricky location than have it started. If you are stopped on the verge on Thurgoland Hall Lane, switch those hazards on and leave the car there.

- Check where you are before calling. A postcode beginning S35 7, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of turning up.

- Three answers determine the entire call-out: the liquid you poured in, the rough volume involved, and whether anything has been running since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

Quarter past eight, a quick fill on the way in, and you realise at about eleven — by that point your diesel Volkswagen Golf has been standing at Silkstone Common for three hours. Phone then keep the vehicle precisely where it is. The drive in is the thing that counts most, since diesel performs two roles on its way through an engine: it ignites, and before it burns it greases that injection pump and those injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. So those few miles were travelled with your pump running on a fluid that had given up much of the protection it is built around — which is why the question our technicians ask is how many miles you travelled, not how long the car has been parked.

## Clearing petrol from your diesel on the forecourt

Forecourts are where this work mostly begins, and where a good portion of it finishes.

We operate on petrol station forecourts all the time, with the owner's agreement, and so if you're still at Murco that's normally where the drain happens.

No place other than the forecourt can the mistake be caught with your motor still unrun.

Fuel sucked out of that tank and through the filter, right to your high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the motor is fired up and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the fuel filter and your lines together with your tank. That is still not a calamity, and our technicians deal with it where the car sits. What determines it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the receipt was read.

Away from the pump, the next motorist can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you roll the car. Well worth it.

Moving the car four spaces doesn't justify firing the engine.

## Coverage around Thurgoland

Sim Hill, Pinfold Hill, Eastfield, Hill Top, Crane Moor — each of these on the rounds that bring us over to Thurgoland as well, a village.

Not on that list? That tells you nothing. The names above are simply the closest few, and most places across South Yorkshire have a page of their own somewhere on the site.

Assuming is the mistake to resist, particularly on a boundary or somewhere a satnav fails. Ring us and enquire.

The patch this page spans appears on our map.

Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: every bit of it is territory we work on, and none of that requires the vehicle to come to us.

## Stranded at the kerb anywhere around Thurgoland?

Not everyone gets a sensible place to pull in.

A common call for us rather than an unusual one: worked out after setting off, landed along the verge beside Stonecrest Rise or at a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Whether you stay with the car or step clear of it rests on whether sitting there feels wise.

Do not fire it up to reach a safer place. It will go — a diesel on petrol generally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the mix deeper into the fuel system.

A van coming to a tricky place is no bother for us, and it is far better for your car than driving on.

Do not risk it. The drive home from Horse & Jockey is entirely possible, which is exactly the problem — a weakened tank doesn't stop a diesel starting or pulling away, it just wears the parts your fuel is supposed to protect. Ring us, and let the Ford Focus stay where it is.

## Some miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

Your M1 is the one which counts now, and it lies under 5 miles from Thurgoland.

It will usually get you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is some smoke, a lumpy idle and power falling away — not a neat stop. Wrongly fuelled diesels seldom give you one of those.

The first safe junction is the one to take. Switch off there, and leave the restarting alone.

Long run? Anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that got to by the contamination. Say that on the call, because it affects what goes in the van.

Standing still, it gets no worse. The pump isn't turning, so whatever occurred on the way to Spring Wood in that diesel Mercedes C-Class is finished happening. Time is yours. Just do not take it home on the motor to find more of that.

## Where is Thurgoland?

Thurgoland is a village in South Yorkshire, situated near the River Don and surrounded by hills such as Sim Hill and Pinfold Hill. Thurgoland has a population of around 899 people and is characterized by semi-detached housing. Thurgoland sits at an elevation of 241 metres, approximately 9.5 miles from Sheffield and 150.9 miles from London. Thurgoland is part of the wider Sheffield urban area, with nearby Eastfield also being a notable neighbouring location.

## What comes next when our engineers reach you around Thurgoland

- Our technicians ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has your motor run? Those answers shape what the work actually is.

- Out comes the polluted fuel.

- Our engineers clean the lines and clean the fuel filter, and so what is left in the system is not what started the trouble.

- Your system gets bled, on new diesel.

- When it is fired up, our engineers make sure it runs correctly on new diesel.

That leaves your car ready to pull away.

Everything is done where the car is, so it never has to be taken to a garage, and when it has been spotted early, lasting damage is very uncommon.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, around Thurgoland?

The issue isn't the same, though the first rule is — never start it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Petrol thins your diesel and takes away the protection the fuel system depends on.

Rust and residue are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, as AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There is a separate Thurgoland page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

New locations are where this occurs most, and the reason is mechanical not slapdash: the slimmer petrol nozzle slides into a current diesel filler neck with practically no resistance at all. Fuelled up close to Holy Trinity without thinking, in a diesel Audi A3 you have had for two days? Call us where you are. Hire and courtesy cars often get driven further before anyone spots it, and miles is what settles how much petrol reaches your injectors.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Thurgoland?

Our engineers can't put one number on this page honestly, because the job is not one job. What changes it:

- Whether the motor has been run or driven. This is the big one.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, measured against how much your tank holds.

- Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where your car is, and if a technician can safely get to and work on it.

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm instead of as a range.

Not pressing, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

By this point the tank isn't where most of the trouble is. Once a diesel has run, that mixture is in the fuel filter, the fuel lines, the pump and the rail — and it doesn't come back out with your tank contents. A diesel Kia Sportage that got by Wortley Top Forge needs the circuit flushed, not emptied.

## Thurgoland motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## At a petrol station in Thurgoland, can you do a fuel drain there?

Much of what our technicians do happens nowhere else. So yes.

Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we will tell you whether we can work there. With the owner's permission our technicians visit Cecil Penney Ltd and the other forecourts around town regularly.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Whether the motor has run matters far more, though the ratio matters too, instead of the litres.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that mixture been pulled right through, or has it not?

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the vehicle

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

It's fixable far more frequently than people assume, even though driving is what takes the issue from the tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out correctly is not an alteration and doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

What petrol has weakened isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a distinct fault. So no.

The tank still has petrol in it later on, and the pump still has to put up with it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Wherever your car is, we drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

## Is your vehicle still with you?

The engine remains off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle later.

A stationary, cold motor is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from much more often than motorists expect.

Across South Yorkshire and in Thurgoland: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
