# Tittensor: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Not for a second, and not to move it: your motor remains off. Stop there.

Petrol in a diesel that has not been run is usually a drain and a flush, done right where the car sits, and what you do in the next few minutes settles that more than anything else.

Here is the order of things from now, anywhere you're in Tittensor.

## Minute one: petrol in a diesel, motor off

In this sequence, all before anything else:

- Bleeding the system pulls petrol from the tank towards the parts it harms, and turning the ignition on can be enough to do that. So the keys get taken out, and the ignition stays off altogether.

- No diesel on top. More fuel in removes none of the petrol — it just leaves you with more of the same blend.

- Get your car easy to see before anything else — hazard lights on — if there's traffic going past anywhere near you.

- By hand, never under the motor: that is how it comes off the pump. Get the forecourt staff to help you roll, whatever the mileage.

- Hold on to the till receipt. It says which fuel was put in and about how much, which is the first thing we will ask.

Still on the move when you noticed? Come off the M6 at the next exit if that is where you are, under 3 miles from Tittensor, and pull over somewhere sensible instead of pressing on to the services. Then start at step one.

## Tittensor fuel drain: has your engine run yet, or not?

Everything after this stage rests on one answer.

Not run, not even once:

- Nowhere but that tank: that is where that petrol yet is.

- Normally it is emptied and flushed just where your car is.

- No spot is better, and it's why the first stage matters so much.

If your engine has run, even briefly:

- The fuel lines and your filter already hold petrol drawn out of that tank.

- On a bigger run it has reached the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors.

- Miles is what makes it a larger job: flushed lines, a filter seen to, and at times further work.

The reason the line falls there: diesel lubricates your high-pressure pump and your injectors as it flows through them, and petrol does not.

A tank of petrol, left alone, damages nothing.

The parts that move it are wearing the moment petrol is being pumped.

## What to have ready when you call about petrol in a diesel from Tittensor

A technician that circles versus a technician that finds you: a little preparation is the difference.

- ST12 9 and the remainder of the postcode is the ideal way to start telling us where you are.

- Give the street — Copeland Avenue or wherever you have pulled up — or the car park.

- Or the landmark. A car park is easier to find by what it serves, such as the one outside One Stop.

- That it's a diesel, plus the make and model of the vehicle.

- What got in. Petrol, or AdBlue. AdBlue is a separate job with its own page for Tittensor, so say which.

- How long the nozzle was in, or the litres on your receipt — either gives us how much.

- Whether it's run. Then if it has, how far and how heavily.

- The owner may have to approve this work under some hire and company contracts — which is why it is quicker to settle whose vehicle it is before we arrive.

Next, 0333 366 0103. Not time-critical, the car parked at home with nowhere to be? Then works too.

## The wait for a Tittensor fuel drain, and what to do in it

Help, however well meant, is the thing that does the harm while you wait. So stick to these.

- Where the vehicle has stopped decides where you wait. Somewhere exposed: away from it, away from the traffic. Sensible: with it. Either way, safety before your car.

- A helpful passer-by does not crank it. Nor does anyone wanting to check it still works, or rolling it a few yards.

- Additives stay in the boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil draw none of the petrol out again.

- Siphoning petrol into a can by the kerbside is dangerous — and it also leaves whatever fuel has already gone beyond that tank. Don't try a home-made drain.

- Even your radio or your windows are not worth turning your ignition on for.

## Step by step: your fuel drain when our van arrives

- The quote comes after three questions, not before them — what was put in, how much, and if it has run — since those answers set the job.

- Then that tank is drained, and the contaminated fuel is taken out.

- The lines are purged. If it ran, the petrol has shifted beyond your tank, and your lines are carrying it.

- The filter is sorted. Cleared, or changed where the vehicle has a serviceable one.

- Clean diesel in, and the system primed.

- The start-up. With fresh diesel in and the system primed, it's fired up and checked to make sure it runs properly.

Our engineers wait until it's running on fresh diesel.

When it has been spotted quickly, lasting damage is very rare, and your car returns to normal use straight away.

## After your fuel drain: back on the road around Tittensor

- Nothing unusual is needed after a start with fresh diesel — normal driving is all.

- Give the first miles your attention. Smoke appearing, a warning light coming on, your idle going lumpy or the throttle hesitating: pull over and call us back.

- An insurer, a fleet manager or a hire firm may ask what was done, and so hold on to the paperwork.

- The handle's colour is not the thing to go by next time — the label on the petrol pump is.
