# The Next Steps, in Order: Petrol in a Diesel Car in Top of Heap

Not for a moment, and not for moving it: the engine remains off. Pause there.

Cleared then rinsed, just where it is: that's usually all an unrun diesel with petrol in it needs. Whether it stays that straightforward rests on the minutes ahead more than on anything else.

Anywhere you happen to be in Top of Heap, here is the order things run from here.

## Petrol in a diesel? What to do in minute one

First, these — in this sequence.

- The ignition off, keys out. Switched on, the ignition can prime your system — and priming is what moves petrol out of the tank into the parts it harms.

- No diesel on top. More fuel in removes none of that petrol — it only makes you with more of the same blend.

- Hazard lights on. If you're at all close to moving traffic, make the vehicle easy to see before you do anything else.

- By hand, never under your engine: that's how it leaves the pump. Get the forecourt attendants to help you push, however short the mileage.

- Hold on to the till receipt: the fuel and the rough amount are printed on it, and they are what our technicians ask for first.

If you were still driving when you noticed, stop somewhere safe instead of pushing on for the services — on the M66, under 3 miles from Top of Heap, that means the next exit. Stage one comes next.

## Each Top of Heap fuel drain starts here: has the motor run?

From this stage on, everything hinges on a single answer.

If your engine has not run at all:

- All the petrol sits inside that tank, and only there.

- Usually it's drained and cleaned right where the car is.

- No spot is better, and it is why the first stage matters so much.

If the engine has run, even briefly:

- Petrol has been pulled from the tank, through the fuel filter and into your lines.

- A longer run takes it all the way to the high-pressure pump and the fuel injectors.

- The job expands with the distance — lines cleaned, filter sorted, sometimes more.

Why the line falls there: diesel protects the high-pressure pump as well as the injectors as it flows through them, and petrol doesn't.

Petrol resting in a tank damages nothing.

Once it is pumped, petrol begins wearing down whatever moves it.

## Top of Heap, petrol in a diesel: have these ready before you call

Whether the technician goes round or finds you depends on a little preparation.

- OL10 3 and the remainder of the postcode is the best way to begin telling us where you are.

- Give the road — Heys Lane or wherever you have pulled up — or the car park.

- Car parks are found most easily by what they serve: say the one outside Morrisons, and it's straightforward.

- Say what your vehicle is — make, model — and confirm it's diesel.

- Say which was put in — petrol or AdBlue — because AdBlue is a different job, with a page of its own for Top of Heap.

- How much. Litres from the receipt, or how long the nozzle was in the filler.

- Has it run? If so, say how far it got, and how it was driven.

- The owner may have to approve the work under some hire and company contracts — which is why it's quicker to settle whose car it is before our engineers arrive.

Then call 0333 366 0103. If it can wait — the vehicle is at home with going nowhere — does the trick too.

## Waiting for a fuel drain around Top of Heap: what to do

The wait is where well-intended help does the damage. Hold to these.

- Wait with the vehicle if it's safe where it is — but if it has stopped somewhere unsafe, you come first: away from the traffic, waiting apart from it.

- Nobody starts it. Not a passer-by being helpful, not to check it is all right, not to roll the vehicle a couple of yards.

- No additives. Two-stroke oil, injector cleaner, anything from the boot — none of it gets the petrol back out.

- A home-made drain leaves your fuel already gone beyond that tank, and siphoning petrol by the road is hazardous too.

- Keep the ignition off — the windows and your radio too.

## When our van gets there: your fuel drain, step by step

- Fuel, volume, whether it has run: the replies set this job, and that is why we give a quote after them rather than before.

- Next that tank is cleared, so the contaminated fuel is taken out.

- If it ran, your lines are carrying petrol that has shifted beyond your tank — so they're flushed.

- Then your filter: swapped where there's a usable one, cleared where there's not.

- Your system is primed on fresh diesel.

- First start on fresh diesel. When bleeding is done, your engine is fired up and our technicians make sure that it runs correctly.

Only when it is running on new diesel do our engineers head off.

Permanent damage is very uncommon if it has been spotted quickly, so the vehicle can go straight back to normal driving.

## Back on the road in Top of Heap after the fuel drain

- Nothing unusual is needed after a start with clean diesel — ordinary driving is all.

- Give the first miles your attention. Smoke appearing, a warning light coming on, your idle going lumpy or the throttle hesitating: pull over and call us back.

- Your paperwork covers the query a rental company, fleet manager or insurer may ask: what work was carried out. Keep it.

- Next time, trust the pump's label instead of the colour of its handle.
