# Toton: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not started your engine yet, don't. A drain and nothing else is almost always what a vehicle requires while the petrol is still sitting in the tank and the engine has not run, which is why it is the next few minutes that matter, not how much got in. Petrol in Diesel goes to the vehicle wherever it has stopped in Toton or the remainder of Nottinghamshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a drive, and drains and cleans it there.

One call our way will be sufficient: we will show you what comes from here. Try it first.

## What to do first about petrol in a diesel

- Give a petrol engine diesel and it will usually fail to run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the harm. Give a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it idles, it moves off — fine enough for several miles. Drivers have that backwards, which is the bit they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So don't fire it up. And once started, never depend on it: that fuel system is wearing down whenever you drive.

- Two tasks, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure fuel pump and injectors protected. Petrol only does the one. That is why the ignition stays off also — turn it on and you commonly prime that system, and that is petrol leaving your tank for just those components.

- Do not weaken it. Diesel added on top removes nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Just petrol. The type makes no difference.

- A car that has never shifted is the easiest one to deal with, and so remain where you are if you sensibly can. Pulled up on the verge on Stapleford Lane? Hazards on, and keep it there. A tricky spot works for us better than a started engine.

- Check where you are before calling. A postcode beginning NG9 6, and the name of whatever is nearest to you. Otherwise the van circles rather than showing up.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Let us know what was put in, about how many litres, and whether the motor has fired. These three answers settle the whole visit.

Phone before you drive the vehicle. Petrol into a diesel Volkswagen Golf this morning, and the vehicle at Attenborough ever since? Then the day has taken nothing from you: fuel in a tank is dormant, and any damage came on the trip in, when your pump was drawing diesel that petrol had thinned.

## Clearing petrol from your diesel at a forecourt

A good portion of this job gets finished at a forecourt, because that is where it often begins.

Still at Tesco? Then that is normally where it happens. Station forecourts are routine for us, with the agreement of the station.

At a forecourt, the mistake is caught with the engine never fired, and no place else manages it.

The few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for the key decide how much needs cleaning. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and driven to get there, so fuel was drawn from that tank, through the filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the filter need cleaning as well as that tank. It's not a catastrophe, and we can still put it right where the car stands.

Staff will usually chip in pushing it clear of the petrol pump, which lets the next motorist get through. Accept the offer.

Cranking it to move four vehicle lengths isn't.

The difficult part is that bay, not your fuel. Cars either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and now and then a height barrier on the way in that determines if our van can reach you at all — so when you phone from a car park like the one at Tesco Extra, say how much room there's round you and which way round the vehicle is. Those we cover often. Should there be no space to work beside the diesel Renault Clio, it gets shifted with the motor off, and not out of pedantry over a few seconds of running: priming occurs at every start, more of the mixture exits the tank for your pump, and two shunts into a roomier space have silently made a harder job of what was merely a vehicle standing still.

## Coverage near Toton

The same rounds carry us to Long Eaton, Chilwell, Attenborough, Stapleford and Sandiacre along with Toton, which is a residential suburb.

Our technicians do come. The names above are just the immediate neighbours, and a page is there for most locations across Nottinghamshire, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage.

On the boundary, or somewhere the satnav misreads? Ring us and enquire rather than assuming.

The area this page includes appears on this map.

All of that is ground we cover: a roadside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You do not move the car anywhere.

Someone will urge you to move the vehicle out of that gateway and sort it out later. Please don't. A wrongly fuelled diesel BMW 3 Series on the zig-zags by Toton Banks Road Infant and Nursery School is an inconvenience; the same motor restarted three more times to be courteous is a fuel system and not a tank. Each restart primes the fuel lines and drags more petrol through the filter then into the pump. Stay put, let them grumble, and ring us.

## Broken down at the kerbside around Toton

Some drivers have no suitable place to pull over whatsoever.

A normal call for us and not an odd one: worked out after setting off, finished up along the verge of Swiney Way or at a lay-by with your hazards on.

Whether you wait beside the vehicle or step away from it depends on if staying in it looks wise.

It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the trouble: restart it to get to somewhere handier and that mixture goes further into the system with every mile travelled.

However tricky the location, it's no bother for us to come to it, and that is a lot better for the car than carrying on.

## Already run it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

Here is where the M1 counts, under 3 miles away from Toton.

Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will often do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is rarely a neat stop. Power ebbs away, your idle gets lumpy, and there may be some smoke.

Take the next junction that is sensible, stop there, and never restart it to move it.

It alters what we bring, so say so when you call: on a longer trip — anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city — assume the petrol has been through your filter, the pump and the fuel injectors.

Your pump is not turning, and so whatever the diesel Audi A4 did on the way to Manor Farm Recreation Ground, none of it is happening now. Nothing is getting worse whilst it waits. Take your time over this — but do not drive the vehicle home to buy any.

## Toton itself

Toton is a suburban area in Nottinghamshire, situated on the banks of the River Erewash at an elevation of around 33 metres. Toton lies approximately 5.6 miles southwest of Nottingham, near the towns of Long Eaton and Chilwell. Toton is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting its development as a residential area. Toton is also close to Attenborough, with its nature reserve and riverside walks.

## The call-out around Toton, step by step

- The replies shape the work, which is why our technicians ask before pricing: what was put in, how much of that, and if your engine has run.

- The contaminated fuel is pulled out of your tank.

- Lines rinsed, filter cleared. Whatever remains later isn't the thing that caused the issue.

- Bleeding the system follows, once clean diesel is in.

- The motor is turned on and tested to be sure it runs properly on fresh diesel.

From that point, you're ready to set off.

Our engineers do everything wherever your car has stopped, which means it never needs to go to a garage, and when it has been caught quickly, it is very uncommon for there to be long-term damage.

## A distinct job: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Toton

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the first instruction is unchanged — your motor stays off — whereas the issue under it is a different one altogether.

Petrol dilutes your diesel and takes away the lubrication the fuel system relies on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

Both are ours. There's a separate Toton page for AdBlue removal, with the details on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Knocking, a ragged idle, white smoke, a throttle gone soft. That's a misfilled diesel Mercedes C-Class telling you what is wrong. Switch off where you have stopped, close to Toton Churches (Methodist) or anywhere else, and don't start it to find a better location.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost around Toton

Truthfully, no single number belongs on a page like this. This job changes. Here's what changes it:

- This is the key one: whether the engine has been started, or driven.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- The type of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Whether a technician can safely get to the vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where the vehicle is.

A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the amount, and whether it has run.

For the vehicle at home that's going nowhere and is not pressing, works too.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Toton motorists

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Toton?

Yes — forecourts are where a large share of this gets done.

Tell us which one you are at when you call and we'll tell you whether we can work there. With the owner's agreement our technicians visit Asda and the other forecourts around town routinely.

## Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

It rests on the ratio rather than the litres, and much more on whether the motor has run.

Five litres into an almost dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mixture been drawn right through, or has it not?

## I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Pull over somewhere sensible, switch off, and leave the vehicle off.

Driving is what shifts the problem from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it is salvageable far more regularly than motorists expect, and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart the vehicle.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, draining and rinsing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct problem, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No.

Afterwards? Still petrol in the tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

There's no need to bring it to a main dealer, as our technicians drain and clean the car wherever it is.

## You, and the vehicle, still together?

Turned off is how it stays.

Switch it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it.

A parked, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more often than people expect.
