# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Touch

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, across Touch and the rest of Fife. The very first thing to do is not to turn on the engine. While your engine has not run and the fuel is still sitting in your tank, a tank drain is almost always all it takes, and the coming few minutes determine that, not how much went in.

Our engineers shall explain what your next step will be. Phone — that comes before all else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to do next

- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will typically fail to run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it moves off — fine enough for several miles. People have that muddled, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. So never fire it up. And if started, never depend on it: that fuel system is wearing down as you drive.

- Diesel combusts, and before it combusts it protects — the high-pressure fuel pump, its injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the car's ignition alone also: flicking it on is usually all it takes to prime that system, and priming moves petrol from the tank into just those parts.

- Do not dilute it. Diesel added on top removes nothing, and so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The grade makes no difference.

- Wait where you are if you sensibly can. A motor that has never moved is the simplest one to handle, and we would rather drive to a tricky place than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Linburn Grove, turn those hazards on and keep the car there.

- Find out where you are before ringing. A postcode beginning KY11 4, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of arriving.

- Three replies settle your whole job: the liquid you poured in, the approximate volume of it, and if it has been going since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

How far you travelled is what our technicians ask about, not how long the car has been stood — and this is why. Diesel performs two tasks on its way through an engine: it combusts, and before burning it protects the high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol manages the first only. So a fast refuel on the drive in, the realisation coming around eleven, and a diesel Renault Clio left at Dunfermline Queen Margaret since quarter past eight tells us those couple of miles were done with your pump working on a liquid stripped of a lot of its protection. Phone us then keep the car just where it stands.

## Forecourt draining for petrol in a diesel

The work begins at a forecourt, typically. Frequently the work finishes at one as well.

The drain normally gets done there and then. Still on the forecourt at Asda? Given the site's agreement, that is somewhere our engineers work, and routinely.

The forecourt is the one setting this gets stopped before your engine has started.

Anywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was sucked from the tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump. That's not a catastrophe, and we can still deal with it where it is. It does mean your lines and your filter need rinsing as well as that tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between reading your receipt and reaching for the keys.

The attendants will generally help you move it clear of the petrol pump so the next driver can get through. It is worth doing.

Firing the car over four vehicle lengths? Don't.

Every start primes the fuel system and draws more of the mixture out of the tank and on to the pump — which is why a vehicle moved twice into a nicer bay has quietly turned into a bigger job than one left exactly where it stopped. So when we can't work next to your diesel Volkswagen Tiguan, our engineers move it without running it. None of that is fussiness about a few seconds of running. Car parks like the one outside Asda our engineers visit frequently, and the fuel is seldom the difficult part: the bay is. Motors either side, a trolley shelter behind, sometimes a height limit at the way in deciding if a technician gets to you at all. Tell us how boxed in you are, and which way your car points.

## Do our engineers cover your corner of Touch?

Being a residential suburb, Touch gets a routine call, whilst the areas close by go with it on that same run: Halbeath and Bellyeoman, Garvock Hill and Kingseathill, Townhill.

We do come. Those places above are merely the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for nearly all locations across Fife, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage.

Phone to check instead of guessing — county lines particularly, and wherever your phone can get wrong.

That map is the area the page covers.

Your vehicle does not need to come to us. Our technicians work over the lot — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

## Kerbside breakdowns in Touch

Not everybody gets the opportunity to stop anywhere safe.

Set off, then twigged? Ended up by the verge of Linburn Road, or stuck in some lay-by with your hazards going? That is a normal call here. Not a rare one.

Clear of the vehicle if it isn't safe to wait there, beside it when it is.

It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the trouble: fire it up to reach somewhere safer and that mixture goes further into the fuel system with every mile driven.

However awkward the spot, it is no bother for us to get to it, and that's far better for the car than carrying on.

## Petrol in a diesel, and the motor has moved

under a mile from Touch, the M90 is what counts now.

Lost power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the signs when they appear, instead of a clean stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Never start it to reposition. Pull off at the next sensible junction and switch off.

It changes what our technicians bring, so say so when you call: on a longer trip — anything close to the under 3 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through your filter, the pump and your injectors.

## A little about Touch

Touch is a suburban area situated on the banks of a river in Fife, with a mix of detached housing and local amenities. Touch sits near the city of Dunfermline, which is approximately 1.8 miles away, and is close to other nearby places such as Halbeath and Bellyeoman. Touch has a population of around 3731 people and is located at an elevation of 87 metres, providing views of the surrounding countryside.

## What follows when we reach you around Touch

- We ask first, price after. What went in? How much? Has your engine run? Those answers shape what the work really is.

- Your tank gets emptied completely.

- What is remaining in the fuel system should not be what created the problem, and so the fuel lines get flushed and the filter cleaned.

- We pour fresh diesel in and bleed the fuel system.

- It is fired up with fresh diesel in it, and we confirm that it is running properly.

The vehicle is then ready for you to pull away.

Lasting damage is very unusual when it has been noticed early, and because everything is done where the car is, it never needs to be taken to a garage.

Why so blunt about leaving your keys alone? Since your pump is before the injectors, and a worn one sends whatever it loses downstream with the fuel. Ring us. Leave the Mercedes C-Class by Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank by mistake, around Touch?

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — your engine remains off — whereas the problem under it is a distinct one altogether.

Petrol weakens your diesel and removes the lubrication the fuel system depends on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Tip that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

AdBlue removal around Touch has a page of its own with the details on it, including why it's usually the more serious of the two. We handle both.

Authorisation first, where there's a hire firm or a company behind the vehicle — some contracts require it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, call us about your diesel Dacia Duster close to St Margaret's Parish Church. You'll not know how full that tank was. Barely anybody does, two days into a car, and it gets worked out on the spot anyway. Our engineers ask because the damage petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a couple of litres in a nearly empty tank make a much stronger mixture than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is built to resist igniting under pressure, which is precisely what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more the engine knocks and smokes and flattens off.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain costs in Touch

One figure would not be honest here, as this is not one job. These are the things that change it:

- Whether your motor has been started or driven. This is the main one.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, measured against how much that tank holds.

- Whether it is unleaded or AdBlue.

- Whether a van can sensibly get to your vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where the car is.

The vehicle, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm and not as a range.

Not pressing, with the vehicle at home and going nowhere? Then works.

By this point your tank isn't where most of the damage is. Once a diesel has run, the mixture is in the filter, the lines, the pump and the rail — and it doesn't come back out with the tank contents. A diesel Vauxhall Astra that made it near The Vine Church needs the circuit cleared, not drained.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Touch motorists

## I am on a forecourt in Touch. Can you drain it on the spot?

A big share of this work happens there, so yes.

Tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you if our engineers can work there. With the owner's agreement our engineers attend Shell and the other forecourts around town regularly.

## Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

Litres are not the yardstick. Proportion is, and much more than either, it counts whether anything has been run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same query in the end: has that mix been sucked right through, or has it not?

## I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

Not restarting it is the single most helpful thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of your tank then into your pump and injectors, yes, and it stays salvageable far more regularly than people assume.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out properly, emptying and cleaning is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

What's likelier to start a disagreement is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more reason for the motor to remain off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. It belongs to a different fault from a separate era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind replaces.

Your pump still has to put up with it, as that tank still has petrol in it after that.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

No. We drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

## Is your vehicle still with you?

Don't switch the engine on again.

Already driven it? Then stop somewhere safe, switch off, and let it stay that way.

Cold, stationary, going nowhere: that is the best position to be in. People fear this much more than they need to.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — call-out fuel draining around Touch and throughout Fife.
