# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Tower Hill? Don't Start It

With that tank still holding the petrol and your engine not yet run, almost every job needs only a drain, so leave your engine off. That outcome is determined in the minutes right after filling up, rather than by the amount that got in. All over Tower Hill and the rest of Surrey, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and cleans it where it is, whether by a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt.

Our team can tell you what the next stage will be. Call us — this goes before everything else.

## Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Do not crank it — and never trust it when it starts. Here is the part motorists get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. A petrol motor given diesel normally just will not run, so the driver stops and the wear stops with them. A diesel fed petrol typically starts, idles and pulls away quite happily for a couple of miles. It's not okay. It is eating into your fuel system while you drive.

- Leave the car's ignition alone too. Diesel does two tasks: it ignites, and before it burns it greases that high-pressure fuel pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first and not the second. Turning your ignition on is usually sufficient to prime the system, which draws this petrol out of that tank then into exactly those parts.

- Topping up takes out nothing. It gives you a larger tank of the same blend, because a diesel fuel system will not tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that guidance presumes — so do not tip diesel on top to water down it. Octane is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Sit tight if it is safe to. Hazards on, engine off, keep it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Tower Hill, anywhere — an odd location for us is better than a started diesel, and nothing is easier for us to deal with than a car that never shifted.

- Know where you are before ringing. A postcode beginning RH4 2, and the name of whatever is next to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of arriving.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Tell us what got in, roughly how much, plus if the motor has fired. Those three replies determine the entire call-out.

## Draining petrol from the diesel at a forecourt

Pumps are where this job often starts, and where a good portion of it finishes.

If you are still on the forecourt at BP, that's generally where this drain takes place — our technicians work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the station's permission.

A forecourt is the one spot it can be caught before the motor has started.

Fuel pulled out of your tank and through the fuel filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when your engine is started and the car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush covers the filter and the fuel lines together with the tank. That's still not a catastrophe, and we put it right where the vehicle sits. What determines it is whether the key was reached for in the seconds after your receipt was read.

Out from the petrol pump, the next motorist can get past — so yes, let the attendants help you wheel the car. Well worth it.

Firing the car to roll four vehicle lengths is not.

## Tower Hill and the towns near it

Tower Hill is a residential suburb, and so our vans are out to the town and to the areas near it on the usual trips: Rose Hill, Stonebridge, North Holmwood, Dorking and Deepdene.

If yours is not on this list it does not mean we do not come — there are separate pages for nearly all locations in Surrey, and the ones named above are merely the nearest neighbours.

Presuming is the thing to skip, especially on the border or somewhere the satnav struggles. Ring us and ask.

The map outlines the patch the page spans.

Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: every bit of that is ground our technicians serve, and none of that asks your car to come to us.

Nothing warns you, since from the driver's seat there's nothing to be warned about. Your diesel Audi A4 will have seemed perfectly usual on the way back from St John's Church of England Primary School, and they all do — which is the snag with petrol in a diesel rather than the reverse. Diesel in a petrol vehicle mostly refuses to run, stopping the driver and stopping the harm with them. Petrol in a diesel starts, ticks over, pulls away as though nothing had happened, and all the while the pump does its work without the lubrication its fuel is supposed to supply. Tell us approximately how far, and how hard. The harder counts more.

## Stuck by the roadside anywhere in Tower Hill?

Some drivers have no sensible place to pull in at all.

A routine call for us and not an unusual one: worked out after setting off, landed on the verge of Elmhurst Drive or in a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Whether you stay beside the car or stand away from it turns on if being there is wise.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that mixture further into the system — and oblige it often will, which is why the engine does not get restarted to limp somewhere safer.

We will take our van to an inconvenient place without any fuss, and for your car that is much better than pressing on.

Simple job, this one — till someone takes it home. A diesel Mercedes E-Class sitting at Prince of Wales with petrol in your tank loses nothing by sitting there overnight, so leave the vehicle then phone once it is light. Expect a query about that drive there, though. Brief and chilly is precisely where petrol fails to burn, and what won't burn can work past the rings and into the oil.

## Driven it already? Pull over, and see this

under 5 miles from Tower Hill, the M25 is what matters now.

A loss of power, an uneven idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, instead of a neat stop — and a misfuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Come off at the first sensible junction, turn off, and do not restart the car to move it.

On a longer run — anything approaching the under 25 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through the fuel filter, the pump and your injectors, and say so when you ring. It alters what we bring.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: your fuel has to hold pressure, not only burn. Thin that fuel and pressure which should build and stay built leaks past clearances instead, leaving the motor a weaker, later, less even delivery than it was designed round. Petrol dilutes diesel, and diesel has to be thick enough to seal the close-fitting components it passes through — that's the whole mechanism. It explains the usual The Glory Wood call too: a diesel Peugeot 208 that travelled out without a murmur and came back down on power, uneven at idle, perhaps smoking a little. None of which is the motor failing, and that's the bit worth hearing. Your fuel has stopped acting like diesel. Put the fuel right and it stops.

## A little about Tower Hill

Tower Hill is a suburban area in Surrey, situated inland at an elevation of 116 metres, and is located approximately 21.5 miles from London. Tower Hill is characterized by its predominantly flat-type housing and is near to other suburban areas such as Rose Hill and North Holmwood. Tower Hill sits within the South East region of England, close to the nearby city of Westminster. Tower Hill has a population of around 4817 residents.

## What comes next when our technicians arrive with you around Tower Hill

- Three things get checked before any price — your fuel that went in, the quantity, and if anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.

- Our technicians empty your tank of all the polluted mixture.

- Lines cleaned, filter cleared. Whatever is left after that is not the thing that caused the issue.

- Clean diesel goes in, and then your system gets primed.

- Your engine is started and tested to be sure it runs properly on new diesel.

From that point, you're ready to pull away.

There is no need for a workshop at any stage, since the work is all done where your car is, and when it is spotted early, lasting damage is very unusual.

Rarely the trouble, the location. On-street is the most common location our technicians work, and a tight parking bay is far preferable to a vehicle that has been driven somewhere more handy. What does help, when you ring from near Dorking Lawn Tennis & Squash Club, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a technician can park alongside without blocking the road, and if anything has run since you filled up. Then your Kia Sportage gets emptied, your filter changed where a workable one exists, your lines rinsed and clean fuel put through the whole circuit — as by now the worst of that is in your lines, not that tank.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, in Tower Hill?

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — your engine remains off — whereas this fault beneath it is a distinct one altogether.

Weakened diesel, and no protection left for the system that depends on it. That is petrol.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with your diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the detail sits on its own Tower Hill page. Both are ours to handle.

## Tower Hill prices for a petrol-in-diesel drain

One price would not be fair here, since this is not one job. These are the things that change it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- The type of liquid in the tank, petrol or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a technician get to it and work there safely?

A clear answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the vehicle, the quantity, and if it has run.

Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is ideal for that.

By this point the tank isn't where most of the trouble is. Once a diesel has run, the mix is in the filter, the lines, the pump and its rail — and it doesn't come back out with the tank contents. A diesel Volvo XC60 that got close to Harvest Community Church needs the circuit cleared, not emptied.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Tower Hill drivers

## Fuel drains on a Tower Hill petrol station forecourt

A large share of this work happens there, so yes.

Regularly, provided the site agrees: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that place is something our engineers answer straight away.

## Is there a sensible amount of petrol in a diesel?

It depends on the proportion instead of the litres, and much more on whether your motor has run.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is whether that blend has been drawn through your fuel system.

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove it. What next?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

It is salvageable much more commonly than people assume, even though driving is what shifts the issue from your tank into the pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It is not an alteration, and so a drain then flush carried out correctly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

What's likelier to start an argument is a diesel that has been run on petrol. One more good reason for the engine to remain off.

## Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old fix for a separate problem and it does not put back what petrol has weakened.

The tank still has petrol in it later, and the pump still has to cope with it.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — necessary?

No. Our engineers drain and clean your car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a dealership.

## You, and your vehicle, still together?

Don't switch the car on again.

Already driven it? Then pull in somewhere safe, turn off, and let the vehicle remain that way.

Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Motorists fear this far more than they need to.

Clearing misfilled cars, Tower Hill and the rest of Surrey, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
