# Townsend: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Pause, then keep your engine off — not on, and not for a second to shift it.

Cleared and cleaned, right where it is: that is usually all an unrun diesel with petrol in it takes. Whether it remains that straightforward rests on the minutes ahead far more than on everything else.

Anywhere you happen to be around Townsend, this is the order things run from here.

## Petrol in a diesel? What to do in minute one

Work through these before anything else, in this order.

- The ignition off, keys out. Turned on, the ignition can prime the system — and priming is what draws petrol out of your tank into the parts it harms.

- No diesel on top. More fuel in removes none of the petrol — it just makes you with extra of the same blend.

- Hazards on. If you are at all near moving traffic, make the vehicle easy to see before you do anything else.

- The staff will normally help you push it clear of the petrol pump. Ask, and move it by hand — not under the engine, even for a couple of yards.

- Keep the till receipt. It shows which fuel was put in plus roughly how much, which is the first thing we'll ask.

On the M4, under 25 miles from Townsend, the next exit is the location to come off; anywhere, the first safe place to stop. Do not press on to the services. Then go back to step one.

## The fork in every Townsend fuel drain: has it run yet?

From this point on, everything comes down to a single answer.

Engine never run at all?

- No place but the tank: that's where that petrol still is.

- Draining and flushing, on the spot, is usually all of that.

- This is as good as it gets — which is the entire point of stage one.

Run at all, however briefly:

- Petrol has been pulled from your tank, through your filter then into the lines.

- Your high-pressure pump as well as the fuel injectors get it on a longer run.

- Miles is what makes it a larger job: flushed lines, a filter seen to, and at times further work.

The line falls there because diesel protects the high-pressure fuel pump and your injectors on its way through them — and petrol doesn't.

Petrol resting in a tank damages nothing.

Pump the petrol, though, and it wears the very parts doing the moving.

## Townsend, petrol in a diesel: have these prepared before you call

Get ready a little, and the technician finds you rather than circling.

- The ideal start is a postcode — one beginning SN10 4 — for where you have stopped.

- A road name is a help: The Croft, say, or whichever street you've stopped in. A car park works too.

- Car parks are located most easily by what they serve: say the one outside The Co-operative Food, and it is simple.

- The car. Make, model, and that it's a diesel.

- Petrol or AdBlue? Say which. They are separate jobs, and AdBlue has a separate Townsend page.

- The amount: the receipt's litres, or otherwise how long you had the nozzle in.

- The miles it did, and how heavily, if it ran at all.

- Whose vehicle it is. Some hire or company contracts want the owner to approve this work, and that is quicker settled before we get there than after.

Ring 0333 366 0103 once you've got that together — or, if the car is at home, going nowhere, use .

## Townsend fuel drain on its way? While you wait

Stick to these: well-meant help does the damage during the wait.

- Where the car has stopped decides where you wait. Exposed: away from it, clear of the traffic. Sensible: with it. Either way, safety before the car.

- Nobody starts it. Not a passer-by being kind, not to check it is all right, not to roll the vehicle a few yards.

- No additives. Two-stroke oil, injector cleaner, anything from the boot — none of it takes that petrol back out.

- Siphoning petrol into a can by the kerbside is risky — and it still leaves whatever fuel has already gone beyond your tank. Don't try a home-made drain.

- Leave the ignition off — the windows and the radio too.

## The fuel drain, step by step, once our van arrives

- Three queries. What went in, how much, and whether it has run. The answers shape the job, which is why the quote comes after them and not before.

- Emptying it is how that blend gets taken from that tank.

- Petrol that has moved beyond your tank travels in the lines if it ran, and your lines are flushed to shift it.

- The filter is seen to. Cleared, or swapped where your car has a workable one.

- Clean diesel goes in, and the fuel system is primed.

- Our technicians start the car only after fresh diesel has gone in and primed the system, then check that it's running properly.

The vehicle has clean diesel running through it before our technicians head off.

Your car returns to normal use at once, and permanent damage is very unusual if it has been caught early.

## After the fuel drain: back on the road around Townsend

- Started on new diesel, it needs nothing special of you. Just drive normally.

- The first miles are the test. A warning lamp, exhaust smoke, a rough idle or a flat throttle is your signal to stop and ring us a second time.

- Keep the documents. A hire company, a fleet manager or an insurer may ask what was done.

- Next time, trust the petrol pump's label rather than the colour of its handle.
