# How Worried Should You Be? Petrol in a Diesel Car in Trembraze

Less than you probably are, if it hasn't been started.

Until your ignition primes your pump, your starter cranks, or the vehicle is driven, petrol in a diesel tank just waits there and does nothing. Which means the honest reply to the first Trembraze question — "have I ruined it?" — normally no.

Petrol in Diesel is who to ring, with your motor kept off, and so it remains that way.

Further down, this page sets out what petrol actually does inside a diesel, how far it may have gone, and how to stop it happening to you a second time.

## What petrol in a diesel does to your engine

Passing through a motor, diesel does two things at once.

It lubricates first, and only then does it burn.

Extremely fine gaps go into the fuel injectors and your high-pressure pump, and only your diesel flowing through keeps their surfaces from grinding together.

The second task petrol does not do at all, and the first it does badly.

The clattering comes from petrol being designed not to ignite when compressed, which is exactly the opposite of what a diesel needs. On top of that it is runnier than diesel, it strips out the protection the fuel system depends on, and any pump working on that blend is wearing itself.

Combined, those leave the shape of the issue plain.

The damage is done by circulation, not by contact.

Petrol in a tank is a fuel issue.

A pump that has been working on that petrol is the beginning of a mechanical one, and whatever a worn pump sheds moves on with your fuel to your injectors further on.

## Petrol in a diesel around Trembraze: how serious is it? Four situations

The best case there can be: filled up, not once started.

That petrol is inside your tank and just the tank, and the job is a drain and a flush where the vehicle sits. This is the one situation that can only really occur at a forecourt, because anywhere else the vehicle has been driven to get there.

Started for a moment, or just your ignition on.

Once primed, your system has drawn petrol out of that tank as far as the filter and your lines.

Drain, flush, deal with your filter: still usually simple.

The pump now spent a few miles on weakened fuel — that is what driving it meant.

The work is your tank, your lines, your filter and clean fuel through the whole system, and how hard the vehicle was driven counts as much as how far.

Driving the children to St Martin's CofE Primary School is one sort of trip.

Driving as far as Plymouth, under 25 miles away, makes a very different task — as does any mileage on the M5, under 50 miles from Trembraze, with the engine running hard the whole time.

It complained, and only then stopped: smoke, clattering, a throttle gone soft, an idle gone ragged.

That is your engine telling you its fuel has stopped behaving like diesel.

Stop wherever you are — the verge on Pendragon Cls, a lay-by, a side street — then leave the car there.

What comes first is still the fuel drain and flush, and that sorts it out, with lasting damage very uncommon when a car is pulled over soon.

## Petrol in a diesel stories Trembraze people hear

False: topping up to full with diesel makes it fine. It does not.

Nothing is removed by topping up — you're left with a fuller tank, still the same mix.

A diesel fuel system doesn't tolerate petrol by percentage in the way that advice assumes.

Myth: "A newer diesel can cope with a bit of petrol." If anything, the opposite.

At higher pressure, through more precise components: that is how a modern diesel moves its fuel, so the lubrication matters more, not less.

"It starts, it drives, so there is no harm" — the myth that trips up most motorists than any other.

Diesel in a petrol motor generally leaves a motor that will not run: the motorist stops, and so does the harm.

A diesel fed petrol usually starts, idles and drives away as though nothing has happened, while the pump wears.

Being able to run isn't the same as being fine.

"A drop of two-stroke oil and drive it home" — a myth, borrowed from a fix from years ago, for a distinct problem.

What petrol has weakened remains diluted, and that petrol remains inside that tank anyway.

Myth: "Drain your tank yourself and you're sorted." After your engine has run, some of the petrol is no longer in that tank: it's in your filter and your lines, and it goes straight back through the pump on your next start.

And, a can of petrol drained by the roadside is truly dangerous.

## Petrol in a diesel: how does it happen?

On purpose? Never. Through carelessness? Rarely, if ever.

The forecourt makes it simple: the petrol nozzle is the narrower of the two, and it slips into a diesel filler with almost no resistance, while a diesel nozzle generally won't go into a petrol vehicle at all. So the slip runs one way.

Habit and the vehicle getting out of step is when it happens.

A new car, a hire car or a courtesy car.

A household with one petrol and one diesel on the drive.

The pumps in a different order on a familiar forecourt.

Rushing for a train outside Liskeard and filling up en route.

Exactly the moment it takes place: after years of driving petrol, someone fills a diesel Renault Megane for the first time.

Add a back seat full of children, a phone call or rain, and habit takes over.

## Next time you fill up in Trembraze: avoiding petrol in a diesel

- A green handle for unleaded and black for diesel is usual in the UK — but not on every forecourt. Trust the label on the pump, not the colour.

- The first fill in a strange car is the time to check the filler flap — inside it, or on the cap, many cars state which fuel they take.

- A coloured fob or a sticker on your diesel's key achieves more than any amount of meaning to remember, in a house with one of each.

- "Diesel", out loud, before you pick up the nozzle — each time a new or hired car needs its first tank. It seems daft. It works.

- Thinking about something else is when this becomes an easy mistake to make, so tuck the phone away then keep your mind on the petrol pump.

- Some diesels have a filler built to refuse a petrol nozzle, and devices you can add exist for vehicles without one. Such an inhibitor helps up to a point — as a safety net, not a reason to stop checking the petrol pump.

- Stop as soon as you realise. Less petrol inside that tank makes a weaker blend. It doesn't change what to do next, which is still not to crank it.

## Put petrol in a diesel around Trembraze already?

Then, there is just a short order of things.

Don't switch your ignition on, and don't fire it up.

If you are still at the forecourt — BP or anywhere else — ask the staff to help you roll it clear of the pump.

Phone 0333 366 0103 next, with three facts — your fuel, the approximate amount, and if it has run.

AdBlue, not petrol? Then tell us. Corrosion and deposits, not lost protection, make it a separate problem — Trembraze has a page just for it.

## What makes one Trembraze petrol in a diesel task cost more than the next

A fair single price doesn't exist here: four scenarios, four separate jobs.

Which of them you're in is mostly what shifts the cost.

The ratio counts next, meaning how much of that tank is petrol, and then the location of your car and whether reaching it is safe for our van.

What was put in, how much, and whether it has run — three questions we ask before costing, not after, for precisely that reason.

A range becomes a straight figure once the answers are in.
