# Trevance: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they stand, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, all over Trevance and the remainder of Cornwall. The first thing to do is not to start your engine. While the engine has not been started and the fuel is still in that tank, a drain is almost always all it needs, and the next few minutes determine that, not how much went in.

Phone before anything else begins, and you will see what comes from there.

## What to try first about petrol in a diesel

- Feed a petrol motor diesel and it will normally not run at all, and so the motorist stops there and so does the damage. Feed a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it moves off — all right for a couple of miles. Most people have that backwards, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So don't crank it. And if started, never trust it: your fuel system is wearing while you drive.

- Switching the ignition on usually primes the system, and priming is what moves petrol out of the tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps greased on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol handles the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the car's ignition off.

- Topping up clears nothing. It hands you a larger tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system will not cope with petrol by percentage in the way that advice implies — so don't pour diesel on top to thin it. Octane is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.

- A car that has not shifted is the easiest one to handle, so wait where you are if you safely can. Stopped on the verge on A389? Hazards on, and leave it there. A tricky spot works for us better than a started motor.

- Our van showing up instead of circling turns on two things: a postcode starting PL27 7, and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it. Keep both prepared before you ring.

- What got in, about how many litres, and also if the motor has run — those three answers determine the entire visit. Dial 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

## Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

Plenty of this work begins at a pump, so a fair chunk of that ends up completed on site.

If you are still on the forecourt at Texaco, that's typically where this drain gets done — we work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the site's agreement.

The forecourt is the single place it can be halted before the engine has fired.

The few seconds between checking your receipt and reaching for the key decide how much needs cleaning. Anywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and driven to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as your tank. It is not a disaster, and we can still sort it out where the vehicle is.

Roll the vehicle out of the way if the staff volunteer, and they usually will. The next motorist gets by the petrol pump, and that is worth doing.

Cranking it just to move four car lengths is not.

The call our technicians hope for runs like this: diesel Renault Clio, a few litres of unleaded, driven a couple of miles, now shut off at Tesco. What we are actually asking is how much fuel your pump has sucked — not how long ago it was.

## Trevance and the villages beside it

Trevance is a rural hamlet, and so our team are out to the town and to the villages near it on those same runs: St Issey, Mellingey, Burgois, Trenance and Little Petherick.

If yours is not on the list it does not mean we don't come — there are separate pages for nearly all places across Cornwall, and the ones mentioned above are just the nearest neighbours.

Close to a boundary, or anywhere your phone gets wrong? Phone and ask rather than assuming.

Check the map for the ground shown on this page.

We work by the road, on forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of that, and the vehicle doesn't need to travel to us.

How far, and how hard? The second of those counts more than the first, and so have both ready. The Peugeot 308 will have felt completely usual on the way back from St Issey Church of England Primary School — they all do, and that is the trap. Diesel into a petrol motor generally will not run at all: the person stops, and so does the harm. Petrol into a diesel fires up, idles, pulls away like nothing happened, while the high-pressure fuel pump gets on with its work minus the lubrication the fuel should be giving it. No warning appears, since behind the wheel nothing seems wrong.

## Stopped by the roadside anywhere in Trevance?

Not everybody has a sensible place to pull in.

If you noticed after setting off and ended up along the verge on Gardeners Way, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights going, that is a common call for us instead of a rare one.

Stay by the vehicle while it's sensible to sit in it, yet clear of the car when it is not.

Never start it up to get to a better location. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging pulls that mix deeper into the system.

Driving on causes your car far more harm than a technician coming out to an awkward location, and that is no trouble for us.

The parts that should be getting oiled are grinding instead, and your car gives no sign of that: a diesel on a diluted tank starts and drives off perfectly well. Try the trip home from Ring O'Bells? No. Call us then leave the Nissan Qashqai where it is.

## A few miles on petrol in a diesel: what now?

This is where the M5 counts, over 50 miles from Trevance.

Some distance along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will frequently manage both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a clean stop. Power falls away, your idle turns uneven, and there may be smoke.

Take the next exit that's sensible, pull up there, and do not start the vehicle to move it.

On a longer run — anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city — take it the mixture has been through the fuel filter, your pump and the fuel injectors, and tell us when you call. It changes what our technicians bring.

Don't drive it home to buy yourself time. You already have it: nothing gets worse while the car stands, as a diesel Audi A4 parked outside Willow Croft is doing none of what it did on the way there. The pump has stopped turning.

## Where's Trevance?

Trevance is a small coastal hamlet in Cornwall, situated near the villages of St Issey and Mellingey, with Burgois also in the surrounding area. Trevance sits at an elevation of 74 metres, overlooking the coastline of the South West region. Trevance has a population of around 587 people, predominantly living in detached houses. Trevance is located approximately 18 miles from the city of Truro and 219 miles from London.

## When our technicians arrive with you around Trevance: what we do

- Our engineers find out what got in, how much, and if your engine has run. The replies change the work, which is why we ask before giving a price.

- Our engineers clear your tank of the polluted fuel.

- Lines rinsed, filter cleaned. Whatever remains later is not the thing that caused the trouble.

- Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.

- When it is started, our engineers make sure it runs correctly on new diesel.

From that point, you are ready to drive away.

All of it is done where your car is, so it never has to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been caught soon, permanent damage is very unusual.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Trevance is a different job

The fault is not the same, though the opening instruction is — don't crank it — if what was put in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Weakened diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that depends on it. That is petrol.

Corrosion and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, since AdBlue is urea in water.

Both are ours. There is a separate Trevance page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it often turns out to be the worse of the two.

Hire car or company car? Phone them before you call us — some agreements want the hire firm to authorise the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal faster than sorting it afterwards. Then ring us about the Dacia Duster by St Issey Village Hall, and don't worry that you cannot say how full that tank was. Nearly no one can, in a car they picked up two days ago, and our technicians work it out on the spot. The reason we ask is that petrol in a diesel does its harm as a ratio: the same few litres in a nearly empty tank is a far stronger blend than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger the mix, the more it rattles, smokes and goes flat.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Trevance?

One price wouldn't be honest here, as this is not one job. These are the things that change it:

- Has it been run or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- Wrong fuel in, against what that tank takes — that ratio.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.

- Where the car is, and if our van can sensibly get to and work on it.

A firm answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: your car, the amount, and whether it has run.

If it is not urgent — the car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

## Trevance drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Fuel drains on a Trevance petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it's where a big part of this work takes place.

Our engineers attend BP and the other forecourts around town regularly, with the owner's consent — tell us which one you're at when you phone and we'll tell you whether our engineers can work there.

## Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

It depends on the ratio rather than the litres, and far more on whether your engine has run.

Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct matter from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is needed is if that blend has been drawn through your fuel system.

## Already driven it with petrol in the diesel? What now?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and leave it off.

Driving moves the problem along — out of the tank, into the pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one really useful thing left to you is not restarting it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out properly isn't a modification and doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a distinct fault and it does not put back what petrol has diluted.

Your tank still has petrol in it afterwards, and the pump still has to live with it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

Not at all. Our technicians drain and flush the car wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a main dealer.

## Still with the vehicle?

Do not turn the car on again.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere sensible, switch off, then let the car stay that way.

This is recoverable from a lot more often than people assume, and a still, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — mobile fuel draining in Trevance and throughout Cornwall.
