# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Trevor: What Happens Now

Whatever you do, don't switch your motor on, even for a moment, to shift it. Stop; leave the car off.

Has not been run? Then petrol in a diesel tends to be a straightforward drain-and-flush job wherever the vehicle has stopped — and nothing settles that as much as these next few minutes do.

What follows is the order from this point, wherever around Trevor you happen to be.

## Motor off: minute one with petrol in a diesel

Work through these in order, before you do anything else.

- The keys out of the ignition. Switching your ignition on can be enough to prime the system, and priming pulls petrol out of your tank toward the components it harms. Keep the vehicle off completely.

- Topping up with diesel seems like it thins the problem. It does not: nothing comes out, and the tank just holds more of the same.

- Make your car easy to see before anything else — hazard lights on — if there is traffic going past anywhere close to you.

- Off the petrol pump by hand. On a forecourt, get the attendants to help you push it clear of the petrol pump. Do not crank it to shift it, however short the distance.

- Hold on to your receipt: the fuel and the rough amount are written on it, and they're what our engineers ask for first.

Still driving when you noticed? Come off the M53 at the next junction if that is where you are, under 25 miles from Trevor, and stop somewhere safe instead of pushing on to the services. Then start at stage one.

## The fork in each Trevor fuel drain: has it run yet?

One answer is what everything after this point rests on.

Engine never run at all?

- Just the tank has petrol in it for now.

- Where the vehicle sits is normally where the work is done: a drain, then a flush.

- This is as good as it gets — which is the entire point of stage one.

If your engine has been run, even briefly:

- Petrol has been drawn out of the tank, past your filter and into the lines.

- Run it further and that petrol reaches the injectors, having passed through your pump first.

- The farther it went, the larger this job — the fuel lines, the fuel filter, and now and then more besides.

Petrol does not lubricate. Diesel does, protecting your pump and injectors as it flows through, which is why the line sits where it does.

In the tank, sitting still, petrol does no harm.

Petrol being pumped is wearing the components that move the car.

## Trevor, petrol in a diesel: have these prepared before you call

A little preparation is the difference between a van that finds you and a technician that goes round.

- Your whereabouts: a postcode beginning LL20 7 works best.

- Wherever you have pulled up, the road's name is useful — whether that's Maes Telford or somewhere else — and so does the name of a car park.

- Describe a car park by what it serves — the one outside Tesco, for example — and it's far quicker to find.

- The car. Make, model, and that it is a diesel.

- Which got in matters: AdBlue is a separate job from petrol, and Trevor has a page just for that. So say.

- About how much — in litres from your receipt, or by how long the nozzle stayed in.

- If it's run, how far and how hard — as well as whether it has run at all.

- Hire or company car? Some contracts need the owner's authorisation for this work, and sorting it before we turn up is faster than afterwards.

Next, 0333 366 0103. Not urgent, the vehicle left at home with nowhere to be? Then will do too.

## Whilst you wait for a fuel drain in Trevor

Hold to these: well-meant help does the harm during the wait.

- Safety before the car. If it has stopped somewhere exposed, get yourself clear of the traffic and wait away from it. If it's safe where it sits, stay with it.

- Nobody starts it. Not a passer-by being kind, not to check it is all right, not to roll the vehicle a couple of yards.

- None of it takes that petrol back out — not two-stroke oil, not injector cleaner, not anything from your boot. So no additives.

- Emptying it yourself is not the answer: a can of siphoned petrol on a verge is a danger, and the fuel beyond that tank remains where it is anyway.

- Ignition stays off. Even for your radio or the windows.

## Step by step: the fuel drain when the van gets there

- Our price comes after three questions, not before them — what was put in, how much, and whether it's run — because those replies shape this job.

- Then that tank is emptied, so the polluted fuel comes out.

- Petrol that has moved beyond the tank travels in the fuel lines once it ran, and the lines are flushed to shift it.

- Cleared, or changed if the vehicle has a usable one: your filter is dealt with next.

- Fresh diesel goes in, and the fuel system is primed.

- Starting up. When your system is primed with new diesel, our engineers start it and make sure it runs correctly.

The vehicle has fresh diesel running through it before we go.

The car returns to normal driving straight away, and permanent damage is very uncommon if it has been spotted early.

## Back on the road in Trevor after the fuel drain

- Nothing unusual is needed after a start with fresh diesel — usual driving is all.

- The first miles are the test. A warning lamp, exhaust smoke, a rough idle or a hesitant throttle is your signal to stop and call us a second time.

- The work may matter later with a hire firm, an insurer or a fleet manager. Keep the documents.

- Next time, trust the petrol pump's label rather than the colour of its handle.
