# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Twmpath? Don't Start It

If you have not fired up the engine yet, don't. A drain and nothing else is nearly always what a vehicle requires while the fuel is still inside your tank and the engine has not yet been started, which is why it is the coming few minutes that count, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel goes to your car wherever it has come to rest in Twmpath or the rest of Shropshire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, and drains and flushes it there.

Our technicians can tell you what the next move will be. Phone — it happens ahead of everything else.

## What to try now about petrol in a diesel

- Do not start the vehicle — and don't trust it if it does start. Here is the thing most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol engine given diesel generally just can't run, so the driver stops and the damage stops with them. A diesel fed petrol usually starts, idles and pulls away without complaint for a few miles. It's not fine. It's wearing out the fuel system whenever you drive.

- Diesel burns, and before it ignites it greases — that high-pressure pump, the injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave your ignition alone too: turning it on is commonly sufficient to prime your system, and priming pulls petrol from the tank into precisely those components.

- Topping up clears nothing. It hands you a bigger tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system doesn't tolerate petrol by percentage as that advice suggests — so do not add diesel on top to dilute it. Type is irrelevant too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Remain where you are if you safely can. A vehicle that hasn't moved is the simplest one to sort out, and we'd sooner come to a tricky spot than have it started. If you're stopped on the verge on North Drive, put those hazards on then leave it there.

- Our van turning up instead of circling rests on two things: a postcode starting SY10 7, and whatever is nearest to you with a sign on it. Keep both ready before you call.

- Three facts determine your whole job: the fuel you poured in, the rough amount of it, and whether it has been going since. The line is 0333 366 0103.

Quarter past eight, a fast refuel on the road in, and you realise somewhere around eleven — by that point your diesel Renault Megane has been left outside Gobowen for three hours. Phone then keep the car just where it sits. The journey in is the bit that counts here, because diesel does two tasks on its way through the engine: it ignites, and before it ignites it protects that high-pressure pump and those injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. So those few miles were covered with the pump running on a fuel that had lost a great deal of the protection it is designed around — which is why the question we ask is how many miles you went, not how long your vehicle has been stood.

## Can petrol be drained out of a diesel at a forecourt?

The job begins at a forecourt, generally. Quite often the work wraps up there too.

If you are still on the forecourt at BP, that's generally where this drain happens — we work on garage forecourts routinely, with the site's permission.

Nowhere other than a garage can it be halted with the motor still unrun.

Our technicians can still sort it out where it is, even away from the pumps. In a car park, on a drive or in a lay-by, your car has been fired up and moved there, and that pulled fuel through the fuel filter then into your high-pressure pump, right from the tank. None of that is a calamity, though the flush then has to reach past the tank to your lines and the fuel filter, and the few seconds between checking your receipt and going for the keys are what decide that.

Out from the pump, the next customer can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you move the vehicle. Worth doing.

Four vehicle lengths is not worth a restart.

## Can our technicians cover your end of Twmpath?

Those same journeys get us to Pentre-clawdd, Park Hall, Gobowen, Iron Mills and Daywall as well as Twmpath, which is a residential suburb.

Not on the list? That tells you nothing. The places above are just the nearest few, and the majority of locations across Shropshire have a page of their own somewhere on this site.

Near a border, or somewhere your satnav gets wrong? Ring us to enquire rather than presuming.

That map shows the ground the page includes.

Our technicians work by the road, at forecourts, on driveways and in car parks throughout all of that, and your car doesn't need to move to us.

How far, and how hard? The second of those matters more than the first, so have both ready. The BMW 3 Series will have felt completely usual on the way back from Gobowen Primary School — they all do, and that is the snag. Diesel into a petrol vehicle generally will not run at all: the driver stops, and so does the wear. Petrol into a diesel starts, ticks over, moves off like nothing happened, whilst the high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the lubrication your fuel should be giving it. No warning arrives, as behind the wheel nothing appears wrong.

## Broken down at the kerbside in Twmpath

Not everyone finds a safe spot to pull over.

Set off, then noticed? Ended up along the verge of Meadowbrook Court, or stuck in some lay-by with your hazards going? That is a common call here. Not a rare one.

Out of the vehicle while it isn't safe to be inside, by it if it is.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls the blend further into your fuel system — and oblige it frequently will, which is why the motor does not get restarted to limp somewhere safer.

Our van heading to an inconvenient location is no problem for us, and it's a lot better for the vehicle than driving on.

## Some miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

This is where the M53 comes into it — under 25 miles from Twmpath.

Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will frequently do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a clean stop. Power drains away, your idle gets uneven, and there may be smoke.

Do not start it to move it. Get off at the first safe exit and switch off.

On a longer drive — anything near the under 15 miles to the nearest city — assume the petrol has been through your filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and say so when you call. It alters what we bring.

A diesel injection system works hydraulically as well as chemically: the fuel has to hold pressure, not just burn. Dilute that fuel and pressure which should build and stay built bleeds past tolerances instead, leaving the motor a poorer, later, less even delivery than it was engineered around. Petrol thins diesel, and diesel has to be viscous enough to seal the precision components it runs through — that is the whole mechanism. It accounts for the normal Granville Park (Oswestry Rugby Club) call too: a diesel Mercedes C-Class that went out without fuss and came back down on power, lumpy at idle, perhaps smoking a little. None of which is the engine failing, and that's the part worth hearing. Your fuel has stopped behaving like diesel. Put your fuel right and it stops.

## About Twmpath

Twmpath is a small suburban area in Shropshire, situated inland at an elevation of around 115 metres. Twmpath lies near the Welsh border, approximately 11 miles from Wrexham and 155 miles from London. Twmpath is characterised by its predominantly detached housing stock, with nearby places including Pentre-clawdd, Park Hall, and Gobowen. Twmpath has a population of around 510 residents.

## What follows when our engineers arrive with you in Twmpath

- The answers change the work, which is why our engineers ask before giving a price: what got in, how much of that, and whether the engine has run.

- The polluted mixture comes out of that tank.

- Fuel lines are purged through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in your system that created any of this.

- The fuel system gets bled, on clean diesel.

- Our technicians start it and check it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

That leaves it ready to set off.

We do all of it wherever the car has ended up, which means it never needs to go to a garage, and if it has been noticed quickly, it's very rare for there to be long-term damage.

About as well as this goes, once the engine has turned: away from the pumps, receipt read, and your diesel Dacia Duster left near Park Hall Farm barely two streets on. Phone us, then leave it off. A short hop does really help. It was still a start and still a drive, though, and so the filter and the pump have had weakened fuel through them — hence flushing the lines instead of only clearing the tank.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, around Twmpath?

The fault is not the same, though the first rule is — never crank it — if what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

The protection a fuel system relies on is stripped away by petrol, which weakens the diesel.

AdBlue is urea in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to corrosion and build-up instead.

Usually the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details lives on its own Twmpath page. Both are ours to deal with.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Twmpath?

We cannot put one figure on this page honestly, as this job is not one job. What moves it:

- Whether your motor has been started or driven. This is the main one.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there safely?

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm instead of as a range.

If it's not urgent — the car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

Someone sure of themselves will tell you to drain it then put new diesel in. Only half right, that. Try it on a diesel Citroen C3 close to Park Hall Stadium and the engine will start — which is exactly why it sounds like sense. Here is the trouble: there is petrol left in the fuel filter and the feed lines, and the first thing your engine does is pull it back through the pump a second time. Draining a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left that tank. Phone us. Your circuit gets purged, the filter comes off where there's one worth removing, and that is what separates a repaired car from one that just starts.

## Questions our technicians get about petrol in diesel in Twmpath

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station around Twmpath?

Yes, and it is where a good share of this work gets done.

We work at Shell and the other forecourts around town regularly, with the station's agreement — tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there.

## Is there a safe amount of petrol in a diesel?

It depends on the ratio rather than the litres, and much more on whether the engine has run.

Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a separate situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is whether that mixture has been sucked through the system.

## I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What next?

Turn off somewhere safe, and keep it that way after you stop.

Driving is what takes the problem from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it's salvageable much more often than motorists expect, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out properly, emptying and cleaning is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one, which is another good reason to leave it turned off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a distinct problem from a different era, and petrol has thinned something no oil of that kind restores.

Petrol remains in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no break from it.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever your car is, our engineers drain and flush it there, so a visit to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## Waiting next to it?

Leave the car turned off.

Switch it off somewhere sensible and keep it off, if you have already driven it.

A still, cold car is the best position to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more frequently than drivers fear.

Mobile fuel draining in Twmpath and throughout Shropshire — at the roadside, on the forecourt or at home.
