# The Next Steps, in Order: Petrol in a Diesel Car in Two Waters

Whatever you do, don't switch your motor on, even briefly, to shift the vehicle. Stop; leave it off.

Drained and purged, just where it sits: that's generally all an unrun diesel with petrol in it takes. Whether it remains that simple rests on the minutes to come far more than on everything else.

Below is the order from this point, wherever in Two Waters you are.

## Petrol in a diesel, engine off — the first minute

In this order, and before anything else:

- Bleeding the system draws petrol from the tank towards the components it harms, and turning your ignition on can be all it takes to do that. So the keys come out, and the ignition stays off completely.

- A bigger tank of the same mix is all adding diesel gives you, because it takes out nothing. So no more diesel.

- Hazard lights on. If you're anywhere close to moving traffic, make the car simple to see before you do anything else.

- The staff will usually help you roll it away from the pump. Let them, then roll it by hand — not under the engine, even for a couple of yards.

- Keep the receipt. It shows which fuel got in plus about how much, which is the first thing we'll ask.

If you were still on the move when you noticed, pull over somewhere sensible instead of pushing on for the services — on the M1, under 3 miles from Two Waters, that means the next junction. Stage one comes next.

## The fork in every Two Waters fuel drain: has it run yet?

Everything after this point depends on one answer.

If it has never been started:

- The petrol is still in your tank and nowhere else.

- Usually it is drained and cleaned right where your car stands.

- No position is better, and it is why the first stage matters so much.

Run at all, even for a second:

- Some petrol has left the tank by now, passed through the filter, and got into the fuel lines.

- Run it farther and that petrol gets to the fuel injectors, having gone through the fuel pump first.

- The job grows with the miles — lines purged, filter dealt with, occasionally more.

Why the line falls there: diesel protects the high-pressure pump as well as your injectors as it flows through them, and petrol does not.

Petrol resting in a tank harms nothing.

Once it's pumped, petrol begins grinding whatever moves it.

## What to have prepared when you call about petrol in a diesel from Two Waters

Get ready a little, and the van finds you instead of circling.

- Your location: a postcode beginning HP3 9 works best.

- Name the road — Manor Avenue or wherever you have stopped — or the car park.

- What a car park serves is the quickest way to find it, and so mention the landmark — like the one at The Food Warehouse.

- That it's a diesel, along with the make and model of your vehicle.

- Petrol or AdBlue? Tell us which. They are separate jobs, and AdBlue has a separate Two Waters page.

- How long the nozzle was in, or the litres on the receipt — either tells us how much.

- If it has run, how far plus how heavily — as well as whether it has run at all.

- Settle who owns the car before our engineers get there: some hire and company agreements want the owner to approve the work, and that is faster first.

Next, 0333 366 0103. Not urgent, the car left at home with nowhere to be? Then will do as well.

## The wait for a Two Waters fuel drain, and what to do in it

The wait is where kindly meant help does the harm. Hold to these.

- Where the car has stopped decides where you wait. Somewhere exposed: away from it, clear of the traffic. Sensible: with it. Either way, safety ahead of the vehicle.

- Not to roll it a few yards, not to check it is all right, not for a passer-by's kindness: nobody starts it.

- Additives remain in your boot. Injector cleaner and two-stroke oil take none of the petrol out a second time.

- Siphoning petrol into a can at the roadside is risky — and it still leaves whatever fuel has already gone beyond that tank. Do not drain it yourself.

- Keep the ignition off — the windows and the radio included.

## The fuel drain, step by step, after our van arrives

- Three questions. What went in, how much, and whether it's run. Those answers set this job, which is why the price comes after them and not before.

- That tank is emptied. The contaminated mix comes from that tank.

- Flushing the fuel lines follows, because a vehicle that ran has petrol past the tank, in the lines themselves.

- Where the vehicle has a workable filter, it is replaced; otherwise, cleared.

- Bleeding your system follows after fresh diesel is in.

- First start on clean diesel. When priming is complete, the motor is started and we confirm that it runs properly.

Until it runs on new diesel, we stay with it.

When it has been spotted soon, lasting damage is very uncommon, and your car goes back to normal use right away.

## Two Waters, after the fuel drain: back on the road

- Drive normally. There is nothing special to do after it has been started on fresh fuel.

- Keep an eye on the first miles. A warning light, smoke, a lumpy idle or a flat spot under the throttle tells you to pull over then call us back.

- Keep your paperwork. A hire company, a fleet manager or an insurer may ask what was done.

- Next time, read the petrol pump. The label, not the colour of the handle.
