# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Uplands? Don't Start It

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes misfuelled vehicles where they stand, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, all over Uplands and the remainder of Bristol. The very first thing to do is not to start the motor. While the engine has not yet run and the fuel is still inside your tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it requires, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much was put in.

Phone before anything else begins, so you will know what happens after that.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

- Don't fire it up. Turned on anyway? Then do not trust it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle normally can't run, and so the driver stops and the harm stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off normally, for several miles. Most people get that backwards. It isn't all right — that fuel system is wearing down every mile you do.

- Leave the car's ignition off also. Diesel does two tasks: it combusts, and before it burns it protects the injection pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first but not the second. Flicking your ignition on is frequently enough to prime that system, which pulls the petrol out of your tank and into precisely those components.

- Do not weaken it. Diesel added on top takes out nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The type makes no difference.

- Wait where you are if you reasonably can. A motor that has never shifted is the easiest one to sort, and our team would sooner travel to a difficult location than have it started. If you're stopped on the verge on Poplar Road, put the hazards on then keep the car there.

- Before you phone, work out your position. Anything closest to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode starting BS13 8 — that is what settles whether the technician arrives or circles.

- Call 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three questions — what was put in, about how many litres, and whether the car has been started. Your answers determine everything that happens next.

## Can petrol be taken from a diesel on the forecourt?

A big part of the job gets completed at the pump, since that is where it usually begins.

The drain typically happens there and then. Still on the forecourt at Sainsbury Fuel? Given the station's consent, that is somewhere our engineers work, and regularly.

No place other than a forecourt can the mistake be stopped with the engine still cold.

Everywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — your car was switched on and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from your tank, through the fuel filter then into the high-pressure pump. That's not a calamity, and our engineers can still sort it out where it sits. It does mean your lines and the filter need flushing as well as your tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for your key.

Away from the pump, the next driver can get through — so yes, let the staff help you move the vehicle. Worth it.

Cranking it for four car lengths? Not a chance.

Tell us this much and our engineers can work with it: a diesel Renault Megane, some litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, shut off outside Lidl now. Time gone by isn't the thing our technicians need. Fuel drawn by the pump is.

## Can our technicians cover your corner of Uplands?

Being a residential suburb, Uplands sees a routine call, and the villages round about go along on the same trip: Highridge and Bishopsworth, Bedminster Down and Ashton Vale, Headley Park.

There are dedicated pages for the majority of locations in Bristol, and the ones mentioned above are merely the nearest neighbours — so yours being left off this list says nothing at all about if we come.

Close to the boundary, or anywhere a satnav misreads? Ring us and ask rather than presuming.

The map shows the area this page spans.

We operate roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks throughout all of that, and the vehicle does not need to come to us.

Twenty to nine. Outside St Peter's Church of England Primary School (VC). Late already, and the receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Put the hazards on, leave your motor alone, and ring us. You could think three miles is nothing, in your Peugeot 308 or anything else — except that fuel is delivered on demand, and a drive taken in a hurry asks for a great deal of that.

## Stranded by the roadside around Uplands

Some people have no sensible place to pull in at all.

Set off, then twigged? Landed along the verge of King's Head Lane, or stuck in some lay-by with your hazards flashing? That's a normal call here. Not an unusual one.

Safe there? Stay by it. Not fine? Climb out and away from it.

Don't restart your engine to nurse the vehicle somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling that mixture further into the system.

We will bring our van to a difficult place without any bother, and for the car that is a lot better than pressing on.

Leave it there overnight. Phone us in the morning. Nothing about a diesel Audi A4 parked in the parking area by The Tythings worsens whilst it waits, tank of petrol or not, and the job remains a straightforward one right up till the moment it gets driven home. The query our engineers bring is about that trip there: a cold engine over a short run is where petrol combusts least well, and whatever fails to burn can get past the rings into the sump.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

under 5 miles out of Uplands, the M32 is what matters here.

Lost power, an uneven idle, some smoke: those are the signs when they arrive, rather than a tidy stop — and a misfilled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong at all.

The next sensible exit is the one to take. Turn off there, and leave the restarting alone.

On a longer run — anything close to the under 3 miles to the nearest city — assume the petrol has been through your filter, the pump and the injectors, and say so when you ring. It alters what we bring.

None of it is the engine failing. That's the part worth hearing, and it's why the ordinary Kings Head Lane Park call ends better than it sounds: a diesel Ford Focus drives out there without a murmur, comes back with the power gone, the idle uneven and perhaps a little smoke, and the cause is the fuel no longer behaving like diesel. Diesel has to be thick enough to seal the tightly fitted components it runs through; petrol weakens it; and a diesel injection system is hydraulic as much as chemical, needing your fuel to hold pressure and not only to burn. So pressure that should build and stay built leaks past gaps, delivery arrives poorer and later and less even than built, and all of that stops once your fuel is put right.

## Where's Uplands?

Uplands is a suburban area located on the riverside in Bristol, with an elevation of around 64 metres above sea level. Uplands sits approximately 2.5 miles from Bristol city centre and is surrounded by nearby places such as Highridge, Bishopsworth, and Bedminster Down. Uplands is characterised by its predominantly semi-detached housing stock and is home to around 4330 residents. Uplands forms part of the larger Bristol urban area, which is about 107.7 miles west of London.

## What our technicians do when our engineers arrive with you in Uplands

- Three things get checked before any price — your fuel that went in, the quantity, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer changes the work.

- Away flows the polluted mixture.

- What is left in your system should not be what caused the issue, so your fuel lines get flushed and the fuel filter cleared.

- Our technicians pour new diesel in and prime the fuel system.

- It is run with clean diesel in it, and we confirm that it is running smoothly.

From that point, you're ready to drive away.

There's no need to go to a garage at any point, because the work is all done where the car is, and when it's caught early, lasting damage is very unusual.

Hardly ever the issue, the place. On-street is the most common place we work, and a tight parking space is far preferable to a vehicle that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you ring from near Bishopsworth Library, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether our van can pull up next to without blocking the road, and if anything has run since you filled up. Then the Vauxhall Astra gets emptied, the filter changed where a usable one exists, your lines rinsed and fresh fuel put through the entire circuit — as by now the worst of that is in the lines, not your tank.

## A different job: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Uplands

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening rule is unchanged — your motor remains off — while the problem under it is a separate one altogether.

Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and takes away the lubrication the system depends on.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it causes rust and build-up in its place.

Usually the more serious of the two, AdBlue — and the detail lives on its own Uplands page. Both are ours to handle.

## Uplands costs for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain

What changes the price is listed below, because the job is not one job and we cannot honestly put a single figure on this page.

- This is the big one: whether your motor has been run, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, set against how much your tank takes.

- Whether it's petrol or AdBlue.

- Where the car is, and whether our van can sensibly get to and work on it.

The car, the quantity, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back firm instead of as a range.

If it is not urgent — the vehicle is at home and going nowhere — works too.

## Uplands drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Fuel drains on a Uplands petrol station forecourt

Much of what our technicians do gets done nowhere else. So yes.

Our technicians visit Esso and the other forecourts nearby all the time, with the owner's consent — tell us which one you are at when you phone and we will tell you if we can work there.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether your engine has run matters a lot more, though the proportion matters too, instead of the litres.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, certainly. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if the fuel system has had that mix pulled through it.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Stop somewhere safe, switch off, then keep the vehicle off.

Driving is what takes the issue from that tank into the pump and injectors — but it is recoverable much more commonly than drivers assume, and the single most valuable thing you can do now isn't restart the car.

## Will a fuel drain void my warranty?

A drain then flush carried out properly isn't an alteration and does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

## Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

What petrol has thinned isn't restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a distinct fault. So no.

After that? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

No. We drain and clean the car wherever it is, so there is no need to take it to a franchised dealer.

## Is your vehicle still with you?

The motor remains off.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, switch off, and let the car remain that way.

This is recoverable from far more regularly than people assume, and a still, cold vehicle is the best position to be in.

Across Bristol and in Uplands: on-site fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
