# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Upper Fant?

Don't start your engine. If the petrol is still inside the tank and the engine has not run, a tank drain is nearly always all it requires — and that gets determined in the next few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrongly fuelled cars where they stand, all over Upper Fant and the remainder of Kent, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive.

A single call to us is sufficient: we will tell you what happens from here. Make it first.

## The first five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Don't crank it — and do not trust it if it starts. That is the bit people have wrong about petrol in a diesel in particular. A petrol motor filled with diesel usually just will not run, so the driver stops and the harm stops with them. A diesel fed petrol usually starts, ticks over and moves off without complaint for a couple of miles. It is not all right. It's eating into that fuel system whenever you drive.

- Two tasks, diesel: it combusts, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure fuel pump and injectors protected. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why the ignition stays off also — flick it on and you usually prime that system, and that's petrol exiting that tank for exactly those components.

- Topping up gets rid of nothing. It gives you a larger tank of the same blend, because a diesel fuel system doesn't accept petrol by percentage as that advice implies — so never pour diesel on top to weaken it. Grade is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.

- A vehicle that hasn't moved is the easiest one to sort, and so stay where you are if you safely can. Stopped on the verge on Whitmore Street? Hazards on, and keep the car there. An odd location works for us better than a started motor.

- A van turning up rather than circling hinges on two things: a postcode starting ME16 8, and whatever is next to you with a sign on it. Keep both ready before you dial.

- What went in, approximately how many litres, and if your car has started — the three replies decide the full job. Call 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

Your high-pressure pump did that morning run running on a fuel that had lost much of the protection it is built around. Diesel lubricates that pump, and your injectors with it, before any of the fuel combusts; petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. So imagine a diesel Skoda Octavia, topped up at quarter past eight, taken in to work, and left sitting outside Maidstone West till you realise around eleven. Three hours of standing have altered nothing about it. The couple of miles before that did a lot, which is why the question our engineers ask is about mileage instead of hours. Phone. Leave it just where it stands.

## Pump-side drains for petrol in a diesel

A good portion of the job is completed at the pump, since that's where it mostly starts.

The drain normally takes place on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Esso? Given the station's consent, that's somewhere our technicians work, and often.

At a forecourt, this is halted with your motor never started, and no place else does that.

Anywhere else — a car park, a private drive, a lay-by — the car was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was pulled from your tank, through your filter then into the high-pressure pump. That's not a disaster, and our technicians can still sort it out where it stands. It does mean the lines and the fuel filter need flushing as well as the tank, and that's decided by the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and going for the keys.

Out from the pump, the next customer can get through — so yes, let the attendants help you roll it. Well worth doing.

Shifting it four spaces does not justify starting the engine.

Petrol in your Peugeot 308, and it takes diesel? Shopping in your boot, you at Spar, somewhere in Upper Fant? Then phone us, and leave your engine out of that — not even to get out of that space. Somebody comes to you. Tank emptied, fuel lines cleaned, clean diesel in, and home you go. Gentle throttle over a mile uses hardly anything, so these are often the easy ones.

## Upper Fant and the villages beside it

Lower Fant, Fant, Tovil, Cherry Orchard, Maidstone — all of them on our trips that bring us out to Upper Fant as well, a residential suburb.

If yours is not on that list it doesn't mean we do not come — there are dedicated pages for nearly all towns around Kent, and the ones mentioned above are merely the closest neighbours.

Call us to check rather than guessing, particularly where you are on a border or somewhere your satnav gets wrong.

That map outlines the area this page includes.

Roadside, forecourt, driveway, car park: every bit of that is territory our technicians serve, and none of that asks your vehicle to come to us.

Twenty to nine. By St Michael's Church of England Infant School Maidstone. Late already, and the receipt in your hand says unleaded. Switch your hazards on, leave the motor alone, and call us. You may think three miles is nothing, in the Audi A4 or anything else — except that fuel is metered on demand, and a dash taken in a rush needs a great deal of it.

## Upper Fant: broken down where you parked

Some people find no suitable spot to stop whatsoever.

Set off, then realised? Finished up along the verge beside Upper Fant Road, or stuck in some lay-by with the hazards going? That is a routine call here. Not a rare one.

Out of your car if it's not sensible to be in it, beside it when it is.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol drags that blend further into the system — and oblige it usually will, which is why your engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere better.

We will send our van to an inconvenient location without any bother, and for the vehicle that is much better than driving on.

## Driven it already? Stop, and read below

Your M20 is the one that counts now, and lies under 3 miles from Upper Fant.

Lost power, an uneven idle, smoke: those are the symptoms when they come, instead of a tidy stop — and a misfuelled diesel will often get you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong at all.

Take the next junction that is sensible, pull up there, and don't restart it to reposition.

It alters what we bring, so tell us when you phone: on a longer drive — anything near the under 25 miles to the closest city — assume the mixture has been through your filter, the pump and your injectors.

Your pump is not turning, and so whatever your diesel Mercedes C-Class did on the way to Clare Park, none of that is happening now. Nothing gets worse whilst it waits. Take your time over this — but don't drive the vehicle home to buy any.

## A little about Upper Fant

Upper Fant is a suburban area in Kent, situated on the riverside at an elevation of around 30 metres. Upper Fant forms part of the wider area that includes Lower Fant and Fant, with nearby Tovil also being a neighbouring community. Upper Fant is characterized by its predominantly terraced housing stock, typical of many suburban areas in the South East of England.

## What our engineers do when our engineers arrive with you around Upper Fant

- We ask first, price after. What was put in? How much? Has the engine run? Those replies shape what the work actually is.

- Away goes the polluted fuel.

- Fuel lines are flushed through and the filter cleared, leaving nothing in the fuel system that started any of this.

- Priming follows, once fresh diesel is in.

- Our technicians fire it up and confirm it runs smoothly on clean diesel.

From that point, you are ready to set off.

Permanent damage is very unusual when it has been caught early, and because all of this is done where the vehicle is, it never has to be taken to a workshop.

## A distinct problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Upper Fant

If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening rule is the same — never crank it — but the fault is not.

Diluted diesel, and no lubrication left for the fuel system that depends on it. That's petrol.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Put that in with the diesel and you get corrosion instead, plus build-up.

Both are ours. There is a separate Upper Fant page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain in Upper Fant?

Our technicians can't put one figure on this page frankly, as this job is not one job. What moves it:

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, weighed against how much the tank can hold.

- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever got in.

- Access: the car's position, and whether working on it there's sensible for a technician.

Tell us the car, the quantity and if it has run, and you will get a firm answer rather than a range.

If it is not urgent — the car is at home and going nowhere — works too.

A couple of streets, then it stopped. Throttle limp, idle ragged, and your diesel Vauxhall Insignia is parked up near Parish Church of St Andrew, Barming Heath. Your engine is not giving up — that sluggishness is fuel that won't build pressure. There's no light on the dash for it, and so motors like yours typically get driven once more before anyone picks up the phone. Please don't. Off, and ring us.

## Upper Fant drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## I'm on a forecourt in Upper Fant. Can you drain it on the spot?

Yes — forecourts are where a good part of this happens.

Consent from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like BP is somewhere we're frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you will hear whether working there is possible.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Proportion settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether your motor has run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank is not five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been pulled right through, or has it not?

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

Driving shifts the trouble along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. Drivers fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one genuinely helpful thing left to you is not restarting it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, emptying and flushing is no change at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

A disagreement over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old remedy for a different fault and it does not put back what petrol has diluted.

Afterwards? Still petrol in your tank, and a pump that has to cope with the stuff.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

## Still with the car?

The motor remains off.

Turn it off somewhere safe then keep it off, if you have already driven it.

A stationary, cold motor is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from a lot more regularly than people assume.

Clearing wrongly fuelled cars, Upper Fant and the rest of Kent, wherever they are. Kerbside. Forecourt. Home.
