# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Upper Hale

Don't start your engine. While the fuel is still in your tank and your engine has not been started, a tank drain is almost always all it requires — and that gets decided in the following few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans wrong-fuelled cars where they sit, all over Upper Hale and the rest of Surrey, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway.

One call our way is plenty: our engineers shall tell you what follows next. Try that first.

## Your next five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Do not start the vehicle. Started regardless? Then don't trust it. Diesel in a petrol car usually won't run, so the person stops and the damage stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It idles. It pulls away fine, for a few miles. Drivers get that muddled. It's not all right — your fuel system is grinding every mile you do.

- Diesel burns, and before it ignites it lubricates — your high-pressure fuel pump, its injectors. Petrol handles only the burning. So leave the car's ignition be as well: switching it on is commonly enough to prime that system, and priming pulls petrol from the tank into just those parts.

- Topping up takes out nothing. It gives you a bigger tank of the same mix, because a diesel fuel system will not cope with petrol by percentage in the way that guidance presumes — so do not add diesel on top to dilute it. Grade is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.

- A motor that has never moved is the easiest one to sort out, so wait where you are if you safely can. Pulled up on the verge on Fernhill Lane? Hazards on, and leave the car there. A difficult spot works for us better than a started engine.

- Our van turning up rather than circling turns on two things: a postcode beginning GU9 0, and whatever is next to you with a name on it. Have both ready before you call.

- Three facts determine the whole job: the fuel you tipped in, the rough amount of it, and whether it has been turning since. Our number is 0333 366 0103.

How far you drove is what our technicians query, not how long your vehicle has been standing — and here's why. Diesel performs two jobs on its way through a motor: it burns, and before burning it protects that injection pump and the injectors. Petrol handles the first only. So a hurried fill on the drive in, the realisation coming close to eleven, and a diesel Renault Clio left at Farnham since quarter past eight shows those couple of miles were done with the pump labouring on a fluid drained of a lot of its protection. Phone then keep the car right where it sits.

## Can petrol be drained from your diesel on the forecourt?

Forecourts are where the job usually begins, and where a large portion of it finishes.

If you're still on the forecourt at Valero, that's typically where this drain gets done — we operate on petrol station forecourts regularly, with the site's permission.

At the forecourt, this is stopped with the engine never fired, and nowhere else does it.

The few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for the keys decide how much needs flushing. Everywhere other than the forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — your car was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from that tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That means your lines and your filter require rinsing as well as your tank. It's not a disaster, and we can still put it right where the vehicle stands.

Roll it out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they generally will. The next customer gets by the petrol pump, and that's worth doing.

Four car lengths isn't worth the risk.

## Upper Hale plus the towns beside it

Hog Hatch, Heath End, Hale, Weybourne, Farnham — all of these on our trips that carry us across to Upper Hale as well, a village.

If yours is not on that list it does not mean we never come — there are pages for most locations around Surrey, and the ones mentioned above are simply the immediate neighbours.

Near the border, or somewhere your phone gets wrong? Ring us to ask instead of presuming.

See our map for the area shown here.

Kerbside, forecourt, private drive, car park: the lot is territory our engineers work on, and none of it needs the vehicle to come to us.

Twenty to nine outside Hale Nursery & Primary Academy, already late, and the till receipt in your hand reads unleaded. Hazards on, engine off, call us. Three miles in the BMW 3 Series seems like nothing, but a diesel pump supplies fuel on demand — while a hurried morning run demands plenty.

## Upper Hale: stuck where you parked

A chance to pull over anywhere suitable doesn't fall to everyone.

Set off, then twigged? Finished up on the verge beside Queens Road, or sat in some lay-by with the hazard lights on? That's a normal call here. Not an odd one.

Safe there? Stay beside it. Not fine? Move out and away from it.

Do not start up your motor to nurse the car somewhere handier — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the mix further into the fuel system.

Our van coming to a difficult place is no bother for us, and it's a lot better for the car than carrying on.

## Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

Here is where the local M3 comes in — under 5 miles away from Upper Hale.

Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will frequently manage both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a tidy stop. Power ebbs away, your idle goes rough, and there may be smoke.

The first sensible exit is the one to take. Switch off there, then leave the restarting alone.

Long drive? Anything close to the under 50 miles to the nearest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the contamination. Say that on the call, because it changes what goes in our van.

## About Upper Hale

Upper Hale is a village situated on the River Wey in Surrey, with a mix of rural and suburban characteristics. Upper Hale has a population of around 2839 people and is predominantly composed of detached housing. ## What happens when we arrive with you around Upper Hale

- The responses change the work, which is why our technicians ask before giving a price: what was put in, how much of that, and whether the motor has run.

- Our technicians drain your tank of all the tainted fuel.

- Our engineers rinse the fuel lines and clear your filter, so what's remaining in the fuel system isn't what started the issue.

- Our engineers put clean diesel in and bleed the fuel system.

- It is started with fresh diesel in it, and we check that it's running smoothly.

Then it's ready to pull away.

Our technicians do all of it wherever your car has come to a stop, which means it never has to go to a garage, and if it has been caught soon, it is very rare for there to be lasting damage.

Three things help when you ring from near St Mark's Church: which side the filler is on, whether a technician can stand next to without blocking the road, and if the motor has run since you filled up. On-street is the most common location our technicians work, and so the spot itself is seldom the issue — we would far rather deal with a cramped parking space than with a motor that has been driven to somewhere more handy. We'll drain your Audi A4, change the fuel filter where there is a serviceable one, flush your lines and put clean fuel through the whole system, since by this point the worst of that is resting in the lines instead of in that tank.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank around Upper Hale is a different problem

Never start it: that opening step applies whether what went in was AdBlue or petrol. What differs is this problem itself.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and removes the lubrication the system depends on.

Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to rust and build-up.

Our engineers handle both, and AdBlue removal in Upper Hale has its own page with the detail — including why it is often the more serious of the two.

Hire car or company car? Ring them before you ring us — some agreements want the hire firm to authorise the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal faster than sorting it later on. Then ring us about the Mercedes E-Class by Hale Institute & Hale Village Hall, and do not worry that you cannot say how full your tank was. Nearly nobody can, in a car they picked up two days ago, and our technicians work it out there. The reason we ask is that petrol in a diesel does its damage as a proportion: the same few litres in a nearly empty tank is a far stronger mix than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger that mixture, the more it rattles, smokes and goes flat.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain will cost around Upper Hale

One price would not be honest here, as this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:

- Has it been started or driven? Nothing else matters for as much.

- Wrong fuel in, against what the tank takes — that ratio.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever was put in.

- Access: the vehicle's position, and whether working on it there's sensible for a technician.

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and whether your engine has run. A straight answer comes back, not a range.

If it isn't time-critical — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

The fuel filter, the lines, your pump and its rail: that's where the mixture is once a diesel has run, and it does not come back out with that tank contents. So that tank is not where most of the trouble sits by this point, and a diesel Ford Fiesta that got by Great war 1914-1918 WW2 1939-1945 needs your circuit cleared rather than emptied.

## Things our engineers get about petrol in diesel around Upper Hale

## Fuel drains on a Upper Hale petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it's where a good share of this work takes place.

Our engineers attend Shell and the other forecourts around town regularly, with the station's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you call and we will tell you whether we can work there.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres aren't the measure. Ratio is, and much more than either, it matters whether anything has been run.

Five litres into a nearly dry tank isn't five into a full one, no. But both land on the same question in the end: has that blend been pulled right through, or has it not?

## I put petrol in my diesel and drove the vehicle. What next?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

Driving takes the problem along — out of the tank, into your pump and injectors. Motorists fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly useful thing left to you is not restarting the car.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain then flush done to a correct standard, which is no modification at all.

Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a distinct fault from a separate era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind puts back.

Your pump still has to live with it, as the tank still has petrol in it later.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a franchised dealer.

## You, and your vehicle, still together?

Keep the engine turned off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle later.

Cold and stationary, a vehicle is in the best position available — and people fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — mobile fuel draining in Upper Hale and throughout Surrey.
