# Upper Up: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not turned on your engine yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing else is almost always what a motor needs while the petrol is still inside the tank and your engine has not yet turned over, which is why it is the following few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel comes to the vehicle wherever it has ended up in Upper Up or the remainder of Gloucestershire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there.

Ring us before everything else starts, and you will learn what comes next.

## What to do next about petrol in a diesel

- Never start it. Fired up all the same? Then don't depend on it. Diesel in a petrol vehicle normally will not run, and so the person stops and the damage halts with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It moves off normally, for a couple of miles. Drivers get that muddled. It's not all right — that fuel system is wearing down every mile you do.

- Switching the car's ignition on frequently primes that system, and priming is what carries petrol out of that tank and into your pump and injectors. Those are the components diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it ignites. Petrol does the burning and none of the protecting. Leave the ignition off.

- Do not tip diesel on top to dilute it. A diesel fuel system will not cope with petrol by percentage in the way that advice presumes, and topping up takes out nothing — it only hands you a larger tank of the same blend. The octane makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.

- A vehicle that has never shifted is the quickest one to handle, and so remain where you are if you reasonably can. Pulled up on the verge on Neigh Bridge Close? Hazards on, and leave it there. An awkward place suits us better than a started motor.

- A van showing up rather than circling depends on two things: a postcode beginning GL7 5, and whatever is next to you with a label on it. Keep both ready before you ring.

- Three facts settle your whole visit: the fuel you poured in, the rough volume involved, and whether it has been going since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

Don't take it home. Petrol-thinned diesel has gone through your high-pressure pump in real volume on the trip in, and the trip back would roughly double that for nothing at all. Phone us — the platform is okay. There is no need to stand over your Volkswagen Passat at Kemble while the work goes on, and we would much rather speak to you tonight than discover on Monday.

## At the forecourt: draining petrol from a diesel

Pumps are where this work often kicks off, and where a big share of that finishes.

We operate on garage forecourts all the time, with the site's permission, and so if you are still at Tesco that is generally where the drain takes place.

The forecourt is the only location the mistake gets halted before the motor has run.

Fuel sucked out of the tank and through your filter, all the way to the high-pressure pump, is what happens when the engine is started and your car is moved to where it is now: the car park, the private drive or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in your filter and the fuel lines along with your tank. That is still not a disaster, and our technicians put it right where the car sits. What settles it is whether the ignition was turned in the seconds after your receipt was checked.

Wheel the car out of the way if the staff volunteer, and they generally will. The next motorist gets by the petrol pump, and that's worth doing.

Four car lengths isn't worth the risk.

## Will we reach your side of Upper Up?

These same runs take us to South Cerney, Cotswold Community, North End, Shorncote and Ashton Keynes besides Upper Up, which is a small village.

We do come. The places above are only the closest neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of places in Gloucestershire, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage.

Call us to check rather than assuming — borders above all, and wherever the satnav can struggle with.

The patch this page includes sits on the map.

The vehicle does not need to move to us. We operate throughout every bit of that — roadside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

## Stranded on the kerbside around Upper Up

Not everyone gets the opportunity to pull over somewhere sensible.

A normal call for us rather than an unusual one: realised after setting off, landed by the verge beside Waters View or at a lay-by with the hazards flashing.

Remain with the car while it is sensible to be there, but out of the vehicle when it's not.

Never start it up to get to a better spot. It'll go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags the blend deeper into your fuel system.

However tricky the place, it's no trouble for us to come to it, and that is much better for your car than pressing on.

What our technicians will ask about is if the trip there was short and chilly, because that's where petrol is least likely to burn correctly — and anything that doesn't burn can slip past the piston rings then into the engine oil. Right up to the moment somebody takes it home, a diesel Ford Focus standing in the car park by Eliot Arms carrying a tank full of petrol in it is a simple job. Nothing degrades whilst it waits, and so leave the car overnight and call us first thing.

## Petrol in a diesel, and the car has gone

Here is where your M4 matters, under 10 miles from Upper Up.

A misfilled diesel will often take you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong, while the signs when they come are typically lost power, a lumpy idle and some smoke rather than a neat stop.

The first safe junction is the one to take. Turn off there, then leave the restarting alone.

On a longer drive — anything close to the under 25 miles to the nearest city — take it the petrol has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and tell us when you call. It changes what our engineers bring.

## A little about Upper Up

Upper Up is a lakeside locality in Gloucestershire, situated near the Cotswold Water Park at an elevation of around 90 metres. Upper Up lies within a short drive of Gloucester and is close to nearby places such as South Cerney and North End. Upper Up has a population of approximately 947 residents, living in predominantly semi-detached housing. Upper Up is also relatively close to London, being around 78 miles to the west of the capital.

## The visit around Upper Up, step by step

- Our technicians check what was put in, how much, and if your engine has run. The responses alter the work, which is why we ask before pricing.

- Our engineers empty your tank of the contaminated fuel.

- Fuel lines are rinsed through and the fuel filter cleaned, leaving nothing in your system that created any of this.

- Priming follows, once clean diesel is in.

- The motor is fired up and tested to confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

That leaves it ready to pull away.

Permanent damage is very unusual when it has been caught soon, and because all of this is done where the car is, it never has to go to a garage.

Pulled off the forecourt, read the receipt, and parked the diesel Audi A6 up near South Cerney Cross a few hundred yards later? That's about as well as this goes once the engine has turned. Call us and leave the vehicle off. The short drive really assists, but it was still a start and a drive, and so diluted fuel has reached the filter and your pump — which is why we flush the fuel lines instead of only clearing that tank.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, around Upper Up?

The problem is not the same, though the first instruction is — do not fire it up — if what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

Weakened diesel, and no protection left for your fuel system that relies on it. That's petrol.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus residue.

AdBlue removal around Upper Up has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it's frequently the more serious of the two. Our technicians deal with both.

A motor you collected two days ago gets driven further before anyone notices anything, which is the hire and courtesy fault in one sentence — and how far it went is what decides the amount of petrol arriving at your injectors. Nothing slapdash about the mistake itself: a current diesel filler neck takes the smaller petrol nozzle with almost no resistance, so unfamiliar locations see most of these. Phone us from wherever you are, by All Hallows Parish Church or not, and we'll head to the BMW X1.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Upper Up

Our engineers cannot put one number on this page honestly, as this job is not one job. What moves it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can our van reach it and work there sensibly?

Tell us what your vehicle is, how much got in, and if your motor has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range.

Not pressing, with your car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

A couple of streets, then it stopped. Throttle soft, idle lumpy, and the diesel Citroen C4 is parked up close to Cotswolds Water Park. The engine isn't giving up — that sluggishness is fuel that will not build pressure. There's no light on the dash for it, and so cars like yours usually get driven a second time before somebody picks up the phone. Do not. Off, and call us.

## Petrol in diesel: frequent queries around Upper Up

## I am on a forecourt in Upper Up. Can you drain it on the spot?

Yes, and it's where a good share of this work happens.

Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Esso is somewhere we are often enough, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the call and you'll hear if working there is possible.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres aren't the measure. Proportion is, and much more than either, it counts if anything has been run.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a different situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is required is if that mix has been drawn through the system.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven it

Stop sensibly. Off. Nothing after that.

Driving shifts the problem along — out of that tank, into your pump and injectors. People fear it a good deal more than the recovery rate warrants, mind. The one truly helpful thing left to you is not restarting it.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

A drain and flush carried out correctly isn't a change and does not invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

Another reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

## Two-stroke oil in that tank, and then home?

No. It belongs to a separate fault from a different era, and petrol has weakened something no oil of that kind restores.

Petrol remains in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no reprieve from it.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Not at all. Our technicians drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there's no need to bring it to a dealership.

## Standing next to it?

The motor stays off.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere sensible, switch off, then let the car remain that way.

Cold and still, a car is in the best position available — and people fear this much more than the recovery rate warrants.
