# Upton: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not turned on the engine as yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing else is nearly always what a vehicle requires while the petrol is still inside the tank and the motor has not run, which is why it is the coming few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel goes to your car wherever it has come to rest in Upton or the rest of Devon, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there.

Call us before all else begins, so you will hear what comes after that.

## Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Do not crank it. Started regardless? Then never trust it. Diesel in a petrol car generally won't run, and so the person stops and the damage stops with them. Petrol in a diesel? It starts. It ticks over. It drives off normally, for a few miles. Drivers get that reversed. It isn't fine — your fuel system is grinding every mile you do.

- Diesel burns, and before it ignites it lubricates — the injection pump, the injectors. Petrol manages only the burning. So leave your ignition be too: switching it on is commonly sufficient to prime your system, and priming moves petrol from the tank into precisely those parts.

- Don't tip diesel on top to water down it. A diesel fuel system will not handle petrol by percentage in the way that guidance assumes, and topping up removes nothing — it only hands you a larger tank of the same mixture. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is just petrol.

- A car that has never shifted is the simplest one to sort, and so remain where you are if you safely can. Stopped on the verge on Thurlow Hill? Hazards on, then leave the vehicle there. A tricky place suits us better than a started motor.

- Keep your position prepared before you ring. A postcode starting TQ1 3 and whatever is nearest to you with a name on it is the difference between a van arriving and the van circling.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Prepare for three things — what got in, about how much, plus if the car has been turned over. Your replies shape everything that comes after.

## On a forecourt: removing petrol from your diesel

A big chunk of the work gets finished at a forecourt, since that is where it usually begins.

Still at Harvest Energy? Then that's usually where it happens. Garage forecourts are routine for us, with the permission of the owner.

A filling station is the only place this is spotted before your engine has fired.

Anywhere else — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and moved to get there, which means fuel was drawn from your tank, through the fuel filter then into your high-pressure pump. That's not a calamity, and we can still put it right where it is. It does mean the fuel lines and the filter need rinsing as well as your tank, and that's settled by the few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for your key.

The staff will usually help you roll the car out from the pump so the next customer can get past. That's worth doing.

Firing it to move four vehicle lengths is not.

## Service near Upton

Upton is a residential suburb, and our technicians head out to it and to the villages around it on the usual trips: Plainmoor, Torquay, Torre, Ellacombe and St Marychurch.

There are dedicated pages for the majority of towns in Devon, and the ones listed above are merely the immediate neighbours — so yours being left off that list tells you nothing whatsoever about whether our engineers come.

Close to a border, or somewhere your satnav misreads? Phone and ask rather than guessing.

See the map for the patch included here.

Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: all of it is ground our technicians cover, and none of that requires your car to come to us.

## Stranded on the kerbside near Upton

Not everybody gets a suitable place to stop.

Hazards on at a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge on Forest Road since you realised after setting off — our technicians take that call regularly enough that it's the usual kind.

Clear of the car while it's not safe to be there, beside it if it is.

It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along quite willingly, and that's the trouble: restart the vehicle to reach somewhere safer and the blend goes further into the system with every mile travelled.

Pressing on causes the vehicle far more harm than our van heading out to a difficult location, and that is no problem for us.

It will fire up. It will pull away just fine. That's the trouble, because a diesel on a weakened tank runs typically whilst grinding the parts its fuel should be lubricating. So no, never risk the drive home from The Jolly Judge — leave the Peugeot 308 and phone.

## Some miles on petrol in a diesel: now what?

Here is where the local M5 comes into it — under 15 miles away from Upton.

A loss of power, a rough idle, some smoke: those are the symptoms when they arrive, rather than a tidy stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything seems wrong at all.

Take the first junction that's sensible, stop there, and don't start the car to move it.

It affects what our engineers bring, and so tell us when you call: on a longer trip — anything close to the under 25 miles to the closest city — assume the contamination has been through the filter, the pump and your injectors.

The pump isn't turning, and so whatever your diesel Audi A4 did on the way to Stantaway Hill, none of it is happening now. Nothing gets worse whilst it sits. Take your time over this — but do not drive the vehicle home to buy any.

## All about Upton

Upton is a suburban area in Devon, situated on the coast near Torquay and Torre, with a mix of terraced housing and other residential properties. Upton sits at an elevation of around 40 metres, looking out over the sea, and is located approximately 17 miles from Exeter. Upton forms part of the larger Torquay area, which includes nearby Plainmoor and other neighbourhoods.

## What happens when we arrive with you in Upton

- We check what went in, how much, and if the motor has run. The responses shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting.

- Away comes the tainted mixture.

- Lines cleaned, filter cleaned. Whatever is left later is not the thing that caused the trouble.

- Fresh diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.

- Your engine is fired up and checked to make sure it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

The car is then ready for you to drive away.

There is no need to go to a garage at any point, as the work is all done where your car is, and when it is noticed quickly, lasting damage is very uncommon.

Rarely the issue, the spot. On-street is the usual spot our technicians work, and a narrow parking space is far preferable to a car that has been driven somewhere more convenient. What does help, when you call from close to The Boulder Bunker, is three things: the side the filler is on, whether a technician can pull up next to without blocking the road, and if anything has run since you filled up. Then your Ford Focus gets cleared, the filter changed where a serviceable one exists, the fuel lines cleaned and fresh fuel put through the entire circuit — because by now the worst of it is in the lines, not your tank.

## A separate matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Upton

AdBlue rather than petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — the engine stays off — whereas the issue underneath it is a distinct one altogether.

The protection a fuel system relies on gets stripped away by petrol, which weakens your diesel.

Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that leads to corrosion and build-up.

Our technicians cover both, and AdBlue removal in Upton has its own page with the details — including why it's usually the more significant of the two.

Hire car? Company car? Call them before us. Some agreements want the firm to sign off the work, and that's much quicker dealt with up front than after that. Then ring us about the BMW 5 Series, the diesel one, close to Upton Vale Baptist Church. Don't worry that you can't say how full your tank was — nearly nobody can two days into a car, and it's something our engineers establish on the spot. The reason for asking: damage from petrol in a diesel is a matter of share. A few litres in an almost empty tank make a far stronger mixture than in a full one, and petrol is built to resist the very thing a diesel needs of that, which is igniting when compressed. Stronger mixture, more knocking, more smoke, flatter throttle.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain around Upton

One number would not be honest here, because this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:

- Whether the motor has been started or driven. This is the key one.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, compared with how much the tank can hold.

- Whether it was unleaded or AdBlue.

- Whether a van can sensibly reach your car and work on it, which rests on where your car is.

A straight answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: your vehicle, the amount, and if it has run.

For your car at home that is going nowhere and isn't urgent, works too.

By this point that tank isn't where most of the problem is. Once a diesel has run, the mixture is in your filter, the lines, your pump and its rail — and it does not come back out with your tank contents. A diesel Vauxhall Astra that made it by Torquay Central Library needs the circuit cleared, not drained.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Upton motorists

## Fuel drains on a Upton petrol station forecourt

A large part of this work gets done there, so yes.

Regularly, provided the site agrees: Esso, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that location is something we answer straight away.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Whether your motor has run matters a lot more, though the ratio matters too, instead of the litres.

Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct situation from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is required is whether that blend has been pulled through the fuel system.

## I drove the car after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Stop somewhere sensible, turn off, and leave it off.

It's salvageable a lot more often than people assume, even though driving is what takes the problem from the tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most useful thing you can do now is not restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A manufacturer's warranty withstands a drain and flush done to a good standard, which is no alteration at all.

Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause a dispute with one.

## Adding two-stroke oil, then driving home

What petrol has thinned isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a separate fault. So no.

Petrol stays in that tank later, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no reprieve from it.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

No. We drain and clean the vehicle wherever it is, so there's no need to take it to a dealership.

## Still with your car?

Switched off is the way it stays.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, turn off, then let the car stay that way.

This is recoverable from far more regularly than people assume, and a parked, cold car is the best position to be in.

Call-out fuel draining in Upton and throughout Devon — at the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home.
