# Petrol in a Diesel Car in Usk

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled vehicles where they sit, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a private drive, all over Usk and the rest of Monmouthshire. The first thing to do is not to fire up the engine. While the motor has not yet turned over and the fuel is still in that tank, a fuel drain is almost always all it needs, and the next few minutes decide that, not how much got in.

We will tell you what your next step is. Ring us — it happens before all else.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try now

- Whenever you drive, the pump and the fuel injectors suffer. This is why you don't start the vehicle, and why you never depend on it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel specifically — the bit people get wrong — is that it pulls away fine for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine typically won't run at all, which stops the motorist and stops the damage with them. This one lets you drive on.

- Two things, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps your high-pressure pump and injectors lubricated. Petrol only does the one. Which is why the car's ignition is left off too — flick it on and you usually prime your system, and that's petrol exiting your tank for just those parts.

- Do not dilute it. Diesel added on top gets rid of nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system accepts petrol. Super unleaded? Still petrol. The octane makes no difference.

- We'd much rather get to an awkward location than have it started — so if you safely can, stay still. Nothing is easier to deal with than a car that hasn't moved. On the verge on Old Market Street, that means hazards on and leave the vehicle.

- Before you dial, have your location. Anything next to you with a sign on it, plus a postcode starting NP15 1 — that is what decides whether the technician turns up or circles.

- What got in, roughly how many litres, plus if your car has started — these three answers decide your whole call-out. Ring 0333 366 0103 then tell us.

The drive back would close to double it, for no gain at all. One commute has already forced a real volume of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure fuel pump of that Volkswagen Passat. So leave the vehicle where it sits. Call us from the platform if that is handier — nobody needs you hovering over the vehicle at Pontypool and New Inn while our engineers get it done, and tonight beats finding out on Monday.

## Can petrol be pumped out of your diesel on the forecourt?

A large portion of this work ends up completed at a pump, as that's where it mostly begins.

If you're still on the forecourt at BP, that is generally where this drain gets done — we work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the site's consent.

The forecourt is the single place the mistake is stopped before the engine has started.

Fuel sucked out of your tank and through the fuel filter, right to the high-pressure pump, is what occurs when the engine is switched on and the car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, everywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in the filter and the fuel lines together with that tank. That is still not a catastrophe, and our technicians sort it out where the car stands. What settles it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after your receipt was read.

Roll it out of the way if the attendants suggest it, and they usually will. The next driver gets through the petrol pump, and that is worth doing.

Four vehicle lengths is not worth a restart.

Any start primes that fuel system and pulls more of that mix out of the tank and on to the pump — which is why a motor shuffled twice into a roomier spot has gradually become a bigger job than one left exactly where it stopped. So when we cannot work beside the diesel Skoda Octavia, our engineers roll it without running it. None of that is pedantry about a couple of seconds of running. Car parks like the one at Co-op Food we visit often, and the fuel is rarely the complicated part: the bay is. Motors either side, a trolley shelter behind, at times a height limit at the entrance determining whether a technician reaches you at all. Tell us how hemmed in you are, and which way the vehicle points.

## Service in Usk

Llanbadoc, Llangeview, Coleg Gwent, Rhadyr, Llanllowell — every one of them on our journeys that take us out to Usk too, a riverside town.

If yours isn't on this list that does not mean we do not come — there are pages for nearly all locations across Monmouthshire, and the ones listed above are simply the immediate neighbours.

Contact us to enquire instead of guessing, especially when you are on a border or somewhere the satnav struggles with.

The map outlines the ground this page covers.

Kerbside, forecourt, drive, car park: every bit of it is territory our engineers work on, and none of that asks the car to travel to us.

How far, and how hard? The second of those counts more than the first, so have both ready. The Nissan Qashqai will have seemed completely usual on the way back from the local primary school — they all do, and that's the snag. Diesel into a petrol motor generally won't run at all: the motorist stops, and so does the harm. Petrol into a diesel fires up, ticks over, drives off like nothing happened, while the high-pressure pump gets on with its work minus the lubrication your fuel should be giving it. No warning comes, because behind the wheel nothing looks wrong.

## Usk: stranded wherever you parked

Not everyone has the opportunity to pull in anywhere suitable.

Set off, then twigged? Finished up by the verge of Maryport Street, or sat in some lay-by with your hazards on? That is a routine call here. Not a rare one.

Fine where you are? Sit beside it. Not safe? Climb out and clear of it.

It will frequently oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that is the trouble: start it up to get to somewhere safer and that blend goes further into the fuel system with every mile covered.

However awkward the location, it is no problem for us to come to it, and that is a lot better for your car than pressing on.

Here's what a job in the car park by The New Court Inn normally looks like. Our technicians get to the vehicle, ask what was put in, about how much, and whether the motor has run since — those three answers settle much of the work. Then the tainted mixture comes out of the tank, the fuel lines get flushed, and the fuel filter comes off where your Peugeot 3008 has a replaceable one. Fresh diesel goes in and your system is bled. Then our engineers start the engine, check it runs properly, and you set off.

## So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a few miles

The local M4 is the road which matters here, and runs under 10 miles from Usk.

Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfilled diesel will often do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is seldom a tidy stop. Power ebbs away, the idle goes lumpy, and there may be smoke.

Take the first junction that's safe, stop there, and don't restart it to reposition.

Long run? Anything close to the under 10 miles to the closest city and you should suppose the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of it got to by the contamination. Say that on the call, as it changes what goes in our van.

## A bit about Usk

Usk is a small town situated on the River Usk in Monmouthshire, Wales, with a population of around 2968 people. Usk has a mix of housing types, but semi-detached homes are the most common, and the town is located near several smaller communities, including Llanbadoc and Llangeview. Usk benefits from its proximity to Newport, which is about 8.8 miles away, and its scenic riverside setting at an elevation of 18 metres. Usk is also close to educational institutions like Coleg Gwent.

## Once we arrive with you in Usk: what we do

- We establish what was put in, how much, and whether your motor has run. The replies shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before pricing.

- That tank gets drained of it.

- Lines rinsed, filter cleared. Whatever is left later on isn't the thing that started the problem.

- The fuel system gets primed, on fresh diesel.

- We turn it on and check it runs smoothly on fresh diesel.

That leaves it ready to drive away.

All of it is done where your car is, so it never needs to be taken to a workshop, and when it has been noticed early, lasting damage is very unusual.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank by mistake, around Usk?

The issue is not the same, though the first step is — never crank it — if what got in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the lubrication your fuel system depends on.

Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes corrosion and build-up.

Both are ours. There's a separate Usk page for AdBlue removal, with the full story on it — including the reasons it usually turns out to be the worse of the two.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Usk

Honestly, no single figure belongs on a page like this. The job differs. Here is what varies it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel got into it.

- Which went in: petrol or AdBlue.

- Whether a technician can sensibly get to the vehicle and work on it, which hinges on where the car is.

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back clear and not as a range.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is ideal for that.

What happens next is the issue. Your engine immediately pulls the petrol still waiting in the fuel filter and the feed lines back round through your pump a second time, as draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it and put new diesel in, someone certain will tell you — and that tip is half right, because do it to a diesel Volvo XC60 parked up, The Priory Church of St Mary say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound plausible. Call us instead. Our technicians flush your system and take the fuel filter off where the car has a working one, and that is the difference between the car being repaired and the car merely starting.

## Usk drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## At a petrol station in Usk, can you do a fuel drain there?

A good portion of this work gets done there, so yes.

Tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you whether our technicians can work there. With the station's permission we attend Gulf and the other forecourts locally all the time.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Proportion settles it rather than litres — and more than either, whether the engine has run.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that settles how much work is required is if that mix has been drawn through the fuel system.

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? Now what?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does shift the issue out of the tank and into the pump and injectors, yes, and it stays fixable much more often than people fear.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It isn't an alteration, and so a drain and flush carried out properly does not cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

Two-stroke oil solves a different issue, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol thinned. No.

Your pump still has to cope with it, as the tank still has petrol in it after that.

## A main dealer for petrol in a diesel — essential?

You don't need one. The vehicle is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

## You, and your car, still together?

Do not turn your engine on again.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, turn off, and no restarting it after that.

This is recoverable from far more commonly than drivers expect, and a parked, cold motor is the best place to be in.

At the kerbside, on the forecourt or at home — call-out fuel draining around Usk and across Monmouthshire.
