# The Next Steps, in Order: Petrol in a Diesel Car in Van

Pause, and leave the engine off — not on, and not for a second to move it.

The coming few minutes determine it more than anything else: petrol in a diesel still unrun usually comes down to clearing then purging, on the spot.

From here on, in order, for anywhere in Van:

## Minute one: petrol in a diesel, engine off

Before anything else, the following — in this order.

- Keys out of your ignition. Switching your ignition on can be all it takes to prime the fuel system, and priming draws petrol out of your tank towards the components it harms. Keep it off completely.

- A bigger tank of the same mix is all topping up gives you, since it removes nothing. So no extra diesel.

- Near passing traffic? Then the hazards come on before anything else, so your car is easy to see.

- By hand, not under your engine: that's how it comes off the pump. Get the forecourt attendants to help you push, whatever the distance.

- Keep the till receipt. It says which fuel was put in plus about how much, which is the first thing we will ask.

On the M4, under 3 miles from Van, the next junction is the spot to leave it; elsewhere, the first safe place to stop. Don't push on to the services. Then go back to step one.

## The fork in every Van fuel drain: has it run yet?

Everything after this point depends on one answer.

Motor never run at all?

- Only your tank has petrol in it so far.

- Usually it is drained and purged just where the vehicle stands.

- Being here is as good as it gets — which is the entire point of step one.

If your motor has run, even briefly:

- Petrol has been pulled from that tank, past the filter then into the lines.

- A bigger run carries it all the way to your high-pressure pump and your injectors.

- Flushing your lines, your filter seen to, occasionally more: this job grows as the distance does.

Why the line falls there: diesel protects the high-pressure fuel pump and the fuel injectors as it flows through them, and petrol does not.

A tank of petrol, left still, damages nothing.

Pump the petrol, though, and it wears the very parts doing the moving.

## Calling about petrol in a diesel from Van: what to have prepared

Whether the technician circles or finds you depends on a little planning.

- Your whereabouts: a postcode beginning CF83 3 works best.

- The road or the car park. A road name is a help — Cwrt Ty Mawr, or wherever you have pulled up.

- Describe a car park by what it serves — the one outside Morrisons, for instance — and it is much quicker to find.

- The vehicle. Make, model, and that it is a diesel.

- Petrol or AdBlue? Tell us which. They are different jobs, and AdBlue has its own Van page.

- The amount: your receipt's litres, or otherwise how long you had the nozzle in.

- If it has run, how far and how heavily — and if it's run at all.

- The owner may have to authorise the work under some hire or company contracts — which is why it is faster to settle whose car it is before our technicians arrive.

Next, 0333 366 0103. Not time-critical, the vehicle parked at home with nowhere to be? Then works too.

## Van fuel drain on its way? While you wait

Hold to these: well-intended help does the harm during the wait.

- Wait with the vehicle if it is safe where it is — but if it has stopped somewhere exposed, you come first: away from the traffic, waiting apart from it.

- A kind passer-by doesn't start it. Nor does anyone wanting to check it still does the trick, or moving it a couple of yards.

- None of it takes that petrol back out — not two-stroke oil, not injector cleaner, not something from your boot. So no additives.

- Siphoning petrol into a can at the kerbside is hazardous — and it still leaves whatever fuel has already gone beyond your tank. Do not drain the vehicle yourself.

- The ignition stays off. Even for the radio or the windows.

## Step by step: your fuel drain when the van gets there

- Three queries. What got in, how much, and if it has run. The replies set the job, which is why our quote comes after them but not before.

- Draining it is how the mixture gets taken from the tank.

- Petrol that has moved beyond your tank sits in the fuel lines if it ran, and the fuel lines are rinsed to shift it.

- Where the vehicle has a serviceable filter, it is replaced; if not, cleared.

- The system is primed with fresh diesel.

- Our technicians start the engine only after clean diesel has gone in and bled your system, then make sure that it is running smoothly.

The car has new diesel running through it before we leave.

Your car returns to normal use right away, and permanent damage is very unusual when it has been caught quickly.

## Back on the road around Van after your fuel drain

- Once it has been started on clean fuel, there is nothing special to do: drive normally.

- Pull over and ring us back if anything looks wrong early on — a light on the dash, smoke from your exhaust, an idle that is lumpy, or a throttle with a dead spot.

- The work may come up later with a hire company, an insurer or a fleet manager. Hold on to your documents.

- Next time, trust the petrol pump's label instead of the colour of its handle.
