# Vauxhall: Petrol in a Diesel Car? Here Is What Happens

Whatever you do, never switch the engine on, even briefly, to move the vehicle. Stop; leave it off.

Emptied then cleaned, right where it sits: that's usually all an unrun diesel with petrol in it takes. Whether it remains that simple rests on the minutes to come far more than on anything else.

From here on, in order, wherever you are in Vauxhall:

## Motor off: minute one with petrol in a diesel

In this order, and before everything else:

- Bleeding the system pulls petrol from your tank toward the components it harms, and turning the ignition on can be enough to do that. So your keys come out, and the ignition remains off completely.

- A bigger tank of the same mixture is all adding diesel leaves you, because it takes out nothing. So no more diesel.

- Make the vehicle easy to see before anything else — hazard lights on — if there is moving traffic anywhere near you.

- By hand, never on the engine: that's how it leaves the pump. Ask the forecourt staff to help you push, however short the miles.

- Keep your receipt: the fuel and roughly how much are written on it, and they're what our technicians ask about first.

Noticed on the move? Get off at the next exit if you are on the Aston Expressway, under a mile from Vauxhall, and pull over somewhere sensible — not at the services farther on. Step one comes after that.

## Vauxhall fuel drain: has the engine run yet, or not?

From this stage on, everything hinges on a single answer.

If it has not once been started:

- No place but your tank: that is where the petrol yet is.

- The work is a simple drain and a flush, normally done where the vehicle stands.

- Step one matters for exactly this reason: it's the best spot to be in.

If it has been started, even for a moment:

- Some petrol has left that tank already, passed through the filter, and got into the fuel lines.

- Run it farther and the petrol reaches the injectors, having gone through the fuel pump first.

- Distance is what turns it into a bigger job: the lines flushed, a filter seen to, and at times more than that.

Petrol does not lubricate. Diesel does, oiling your pump and injectors as it flows through, which is why the line sits where it does.

A tank of petrol, left still, damages nothing.

The parts that shift it are wearing the moment petrol is being pumped.

## Before you call about petrol in a diesel in Vauxhall: what our technicians need

Get ready a little, and the van finds you instead of circling.

- B7 4 plus the remainder of the postcode is the best way to start telling us where you are.

- The street or the car park. A road name helps — Inkerman Street, or wherever you have stopped.

- Car parks are located more easily by what they serve: say the one at Al Halal Supermarket, and it is straightforward.

- The vehicle. Make, model, and that it's a diesel.

- Tell us which went in — petrol or AdBlue — since AdBlue is a different job, with a page of its own for Vauxhall.

- About how much — in litres from your receipt, or by how long the nozzle was in.

- If it's run, how far and how hard — and whether it's run at all.

- Whose car it is. Some hire or company agreements want the owner to approve this work, and that's easier settled before our engineers arrive than after.

Next, 0333 366 0103. Not pressing, the car parked at home with nowhere to be? Then works as well.

## While you wait for a fuel drain around Vauxhall

Help, however well meant, is the thing that does the harm while you wait. So hold to these.

- Where your car has stopped decides where you wait. Exposed: away from it, clear of the traffic. Sensible: with it. Either way, safety ahead of the vehicle.

- Not to roll it a few yards, not to check it is all right, not as a passer-by's favour: no one starts it.

- None of it gets the petrol back out — not two-stroke oil, not injector cleaner, not something from your boot. So no additives.

- No home-made draining. Siphoning petrol into a can at the roadside is hazardous, and it leaves your fuel that has by now gone beyond the tank.

- Even the radio or your windows are not worth turning the ignition on for.

## Van arrived? The fuel drain, one stage at a time

- First, three questions: which fuel went in, the volume, and has it run? Those answers shape this job, and so the quote follows them.

- Out of your tank comes the tainted mixture: the tank is drained.

- Petrol that has moved beyond the tank sits in your lines once it ran, and your lines are purged to clear it.

- Then the filter: replaced where there's a usable one, cleared where there's not.

- The system is primed with clean diesel.

- The start. With new diesel in and the system primed, it's started and tested to be sure it runs smoothly.

Only when it's running on clean diesel do our engineers go.

It is very rare for a car caught quickly to be left with long-term damage, and normal use resumes at once.

## Back on the road around Vauxhall after your fuel drain

- Nothing special is needed after a start with fresh diesel — normal driving is all.

- Watch the first miles. A warning light, smoke, a lumpy idle or a flat spot under the throttle means pull over then call us back.

- An insurer, a fleet manager or a hire firm may ask what was done, and so keep the paperwork.

- Check the label on the petrol pump next time, not the colour of the handle.
