# Velindre: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not fired up the engine yet, don't. A fuel drain and nothing more is nearly always what a car requires while the fuel is still sitting in the tank and the engine has not been started, which is why it is the coming few minutes that count, not how much went in. Petrol in Diesel comes to your car wherever it has ended up in Velindre or the rest of Neath Port Talbot, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and cleans it there.

Our team will show you what the next move will be. Call us — that comes ahead of everything else.

## Your next five minutes: petrol in a diesel

- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will generally not run at all, and so the driver stops there and so does the wear. Feed a diesel petrol and the engine starts, it ticks over, it drives off — all right for a few miles. Motorists have that backwards, which is the thing they get wrong about petrol in a diesel especially. So do not crank it. And having started, never rely on it: the fuel system is grinding whenever you drive.

- Two things, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure pump and injectors greased. Petrol only handles the one. Which is why the ignition stays off as well — switch it on and you often prime that system, and that is petrol exiting your tank for precisely those parts.

- Do not thin it. Diesel poured on top clears nothing, and so all you have is more of what was already there, because percentage is not how a diesel fuel system copes with petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The type makes no difference.

- Stay still if it's safe to. Hazards on, ignition off, leave the car. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Ford Road, anywhere — an awkward spot for us trumps a started diesel, and nothing is simpler for us to deal with than a car that never moved.

- Get your position ready before you dial. A postcode starting SA13 1 and whatever is nearest to you with a label on it is the difference between a van turning up and a van circling.

- Three facts decide the entire call-out: the stuff you poured in, the ballpark amount involved, plus if anything has been running since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

Never run it home. The journey in has already put a real quantity of petrol-thinned diesel through your high-pressure pump of that Volkswagen Golf, and the journey back would more or less double it for no gain at all. Phone us from the platform if that's simpler. Our engineers don't need you standing over the car at Port Talbot Parkway whilst we get it done, and our team would very much rather talk to you tonight than discover on Monday.

## Pump-side draining for petrol in a diesel

Most of the work starts at the pump, meaning a large share of that gets done at one.

Our technicians work on station forecourts routinely, with the station's consent, and so if you're still at Tesco that is normally where this drain gets done.

At a forecourt, the mistake gets stopped with your motor never fired, and nowhere else does that.

Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from the tank, through the filter then into your high-pressure pump. That is not a disaster, and our engineers can still deal with it where it sits. It does mean your lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as the tank, and that is settled by the few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for the key.

The attendants will usually help you push it clear of the petrol pump so the next driver can get through. That is worth doing.

Moving the car four bays does not merit starting the motor.

## Will our engineers serve your side of Velindre?

Corlannau, Lletyharri, Port Talbot, Caerhendy, Pen-y-cae — all of those on the rounds that carry us over to Velindre too, a residential suburb.

Not on this list? It tells you nothing. The places above are just the nearest few, and the majority of places around Neath Port Talbot have a page of their own somewhere on our site.

Call us to enquire instead of presuming — boundaries especially, and wherever the satnav may misread.

See our map for the area covered on this page.

The lot is ground our technicians work: a kerbside, a forecourt, a drive, a car park. You don't bring the vehicle anywhere.

## Roadside call-outs in Velindre

Some people get no safe spot to pull in at all.

If you worked it out after setting off and ended up by the verge on Avan Street, or in a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights flashing, that's a common call for us instead of a rare one.

Clear of the vehicle when it isn't safe to wait there, by it when it is.

Don't restart it to get to a better location. It will go — a diesel on petrol usually obliges — and each mile of obliging drags that mixture deeper into the system.

Pressing on causes the car far more harm than our van heading out to a difficult place, and that's no bother for us.

What we will ask about is if the trip there was brief and chilly, since that's where petrol is least likely to burn fully — and whatever won't burn can slip past the rings and into the oil. Right up to the moment someone drives it home, a diesel Mercedes C-Class sitting in the car park by Forge Tavern carrying a tank of petrol in it is a simple job. Nothing worsens whilst it stands, and so park the car there overnight and call us in the morning.

## Run it already? Stop, then read this

under a mile out of Velindre, your M4 is what matters now.

A misfuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, while the symptoms when they arrive are usually a loss of power, a lumpy idle and smoke rather than a tidy stop.

Pull off at the next safe junction, switch off, and don't restart the vehicle to reposition.

It affects what we bring, so say so when you ring: on a longer run — anything near the under 10 miles to the nearest city — take it the contamination has been through the filter, the pump and your injectors.

Happy on the way out, gutless on the way back. If that's how that run to Aberavon Park went, that tank is the place to look. Petrol weakens diesel, and runnier fuel slips past the close-fitting parts that are supposed to build injection pressure — so the farther the Peugeot 3008 travelled, the less well it held that pressure. Stop somewhere safe, switch off and call us.

## Where is Velindre?

Velindre is a suburban area in Neath Port Talbot, situated near the coast and approximately 7 miles from Swansea. Velindre has a relatively low elevation of 17 metres and is characterized by predominantly terraced housing. Velindre is close to nearby places such as Corlannau and Port Talbot, and is part of the wider Swansea Bay area.

## Our call-out in Velindre, step by step

- Three things get established before any quote — the fuel that was put in, the amount, and whether anything has been run since. Each answer alters the work.

- The tank is emptied of everything.

- Lines purged, filter cleaned. Whatever is left later on is not the thing that started the trouble.

- Fresh diesel goes in, and then the fuel system gets primed.

- We fire it up and confirm it runs correctly on fresh diesel.

Then it's ready to pull away.

Everything is done where the car is, so it never has to go to a workshop, and when it has been noticed early, permanent damage is very unusual.

Three things help when you call from close to Neath Port Talbot Library and Information Services: which side the filler is on, whether our van can park beside without blocking the road, and if the engine has run since you filled up. On-street is the most common spot our engineers work, so the location itself is hardly ever the problem — we would far rather deal with a narrow parking bay than with a motor that has been driven to somewhere more handy. We will drain the Audi A3, change the fuel filter where there is a usable one, flush the fuel lines and put fresh fuel through the full circuit, because by this point the worst of it is waiting in the fuel lines instead of in that tank.

## AdBlue in your diesel tank instead, in Velindre?

If what got in was AdBlue instead of petrol, the first instruction is the same — don't crank it — but this fault is not.

Petrol dilutes your diesel and takes away the lubrication the system relies on.

AdBlue is urea dissolved in water, and in a diesel tank it leads to rust and build-up instead.

AdBlue removal around Velindre has a page of its own with the detail on it, including why it's often the more significant of the two. Our technicians deal with both.

Authorisation first, where there's a hire firm or a company behind your car — some agreements insist on it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, phone us about the diesel BMW 5 Series near St. Agnes' Church. You will not know how full the tank was. Hardly anybody does, two days into a motor, and it gets worked out on the spot all the same. We ask as the damage petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a few litres in a nearly empty tank make a much stronger blend than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is designed to resist igniting under pressure, which is exactly what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more your engine knocks and smokes and flattens off.

## What a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain costs in Velindre

One figure wouldn't be fair here, because this is not one job. These are the things that shift it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer counts more than anything else on this list.

- How much of the wrong fuel was put in, against how much your tank can hold.

- The sort of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a technician reach it and work there sensibly?

A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the amount, and whether it has run.

Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is fine for that.

## Velindre drivers ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Can you do a fuel drain at a petrol station in Velindre?

Much of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes.

Tell us which one you are at when you phone and we'll tell you if our engineers can work there. With the station's consent our technicians attend another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts nearby routinely.

## A few litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

Whether the motor has run counts far more, though the ratio counts too, instead of the litres.

Five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is whether that blend has been drawn through the fuel system.

## I drove the vehicle after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Switch off somewhere sensible, and keep it that way after you stop.

Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of the tank and into your pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable far more commonly than motorists fear.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

It is not a modification, and so a drain then flush carried out properly doesn't cancel a manufacturer's warranty.

An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

Two-stroke oil solves a distinct fault, and an old one at that. Nothing it does puts back what petrol diluted. No.

The tank still has petrol in it later, and the pump still has to put up with it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

You do not need one. The car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to bring it to a main dealer.

## Is your car still with you?

The engine remains off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere sensible, stop, switch off, and no restarting the car later on.

Cold, parked, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Motorists fear this far more than they need to.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — call-out fuel draining around Velindre and across Neath Port Talbot.
