# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Wade Hall?

With that tank still carrying the petrol and the engine not yet run, almost every job takes only a drain, so leave the engine off. That outcome is determined in the minutes immediately after the fill-up, rather than by the amount that got in. All over Wade Hall and the rest of Lancashire, Petrol in Diesel drains the car and flushes it where it stands, whether at a roadside, on a private drive or at a forecourt.

Ring us and then we can show you what happens next before you do anything else.

## Your first five steps: petrol in a diesel

- As you drive, the pump and the injectors wear down. This is why you never fire it up, and why you do not believe it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel especially — the part motorists get wrong — is that it pulls away happily for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol engine usually will not run at all, which stops the driver and stops the wear with them. This one lets you drive on.

- Two tasks, diesel: it ignites, and on the way through it keeps the high-pressure pump and injectors protected. Petrol only manages the one. That is why the ignition stays off as well — turn it on and you commonly prime that system, and that is petrol exiting that tank for precisely those components.

- That guidance supposes a diesel fuel system handles petrol by percentage. It will not. Put diesel on top and nothing at all is taken out; what you have is a larger tank of the same mix. And no, the grade makes no difference — super unleaded is simply petrol.

- Remain where you are if you safely can. A vehicle that has never moved is the simplest one to sort, and we'd sooner travel to an awkward location than have it started. If you are pulled up on the verge on West Paddock, turn your hazards on then keep the vehicle there.

- Before you dial, get your location. Anything closest to you with a label on it, plus a postcode beginning PR25 1 — that is what decides whether the technician shows up or circles.

- Dial 0333 366 0103. Anticipate three queries — what went in, about how much, and whether your car has been run. Your answers decide everything that comes after.

Quarter past eight, a rushed fill on the road in, and you realise somewhere around eleven — by which time your diesel Volkswagen Golf has been parked outside Leyland for three hours. Phone then leave it just where it is. The trip in is the bit that counts most, as diesel has two tasks on its way through an engine: it ignites, and before it ignites it greases its high-pressure fuel pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. So those couple of miles were driven with your pump labouring on a fuel that had shed most of the protection it is made for — which is why the thing we ask is how many miles you drove, not how long the vehicle has been standing.

## On the forecourt: clearing petrol from the diesel

The job starts at a forecourt, generally. Frequently the work wraps up on site too.

The drain typically gets done on the spot. Still on the forecourt at Tesco? Given the site's agreement, that's a spot our engineers work, and regularly.

At the forecourt, the mistake is stopped with your engine never run, and no place else does it.

Everywhere else — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was started and driven to get there, which means fuel was drawn from that tank, through the filter and into the high-pressure fuel pump. That is not a calamity, and we can still put it right where it sits. It does mean the fuel lines and the fuel filter need rinsing as well as the tank, and that is determined by the few seconds between checking your receipt and going for the keys.

Staff will generally pitch in pushing it out from the petrol pump, which lets the next driver get past. Accept the offer.

Firing the car to roll four car lengths isn't.

The tricky part is that bay, not your fuel. Cars either side of you, a trolley shelter behind, and occasionally a height bar on the way in that settles whether a van can get to you at all — so when you ring from a car park like the one outside Spar, mention how much space there's round you and which way round your car is. Those our technicians visit frequently. Should there be no room to work beside the diesel Renault Megane, it gets rolled with the engine off, and not out of fuss over a few seconds of running: priming takes place at every start, more of that mixture departs your tank for the pump, and two shunts into a roomier space have gradually made a harder job of what was just a motor sitting still.

## Areas our vans cover in Wade Hall

Being a residential suburb, Wade Hall gets a regular visit, whilst the areas round about come with it on the same trip: Lower House and Seven Stars, Broadfield and The Straits, Leyland.

There are separate pages for nearly all locations around Lancashire, and the ones mentioned above are simply the immediate neighbours — so yours being absent from that list tells you nothing whatsoever about if we come.

Contact us and ask instead of guessing — boundaries particularly, and anywhere your phone may get wrong.

The area this page covers is on the map.

Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: every bit of that is ground we work on, and none of that needs your vehicle to travel to us.

## Wade Hall: stranded wherever you pulled up

Not everybody gets the chance to pull over anywhere safe.

If you noticed after setting off and ended up along the verge of Queensway, or at a lay-by somewhere with the hazard lights on, that is a normal call for us instead of an odd one.

Clear of the car when it is not safe to wait there, beside it when it is.

Every mile a diesel obliges you for on petrol pulls that mixture further into your fuel system — and oblige it usually will, which is why the engine doesn't get restarted to limp somewhere handier.

Our van coming to an awkward place is no bother for us, and it is far better for your car than driving on.

## Already run it? Petrol in a diesel over some miles

This is where the M6 counts, under 3 miles away from Wade Hall.

Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a misfuelled diesel will frequently do both before anything feels wrong. What you get then is rarely a clean stop. Power falls away, the idle turns uneven, and there may be smoke.

Take the first junction that's sensible, pull up there, and never restart it to reposition.

On a longer run — anything near the under 10 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the filter, the pump and the injectors, and mention it when you phone. It changes what we bring.

Fine on the way out, flat on the way back. If that is how that trip to Brickfield Wood went, that tank is where to look. Petrol dilutes diesel, and thinner fuel seeps past the tightly fitted parts that are meant to build injection pressure — so the farther the Mercedes C-Class went, the less well it held that pressure. Pull over somewhere sensible, switch off and call us.

## Wade Hall itself

Wade Hall is a suburban area located on the riverside in Lancashire, with an elevation of around 25 metres. Wade Hall sits near the city of Preston, approximately 5 miles away, and is close to other nearby places such as Lower House and Seven Stars. Wade Hall has a population of around 5416 people and predominantly consists of semi-detached housing. Wade Hall is situated in the North West region of England, about 185.6 miles from London.

## When our engineers get to you in Wade Hall: what we do

- Our technicians find out what went in, how much, and if your engine has run. The responses alter the work, which is why our technicians ask before quoting.

- The tank is emptied of everything.

- Fuel lines are flushed through and the fuel filter cleared, leaving nothing in the system that created any of this.

- New diesel goes in, and then the system gets bled.

- It's started with new diesel in it, and our technicians make sure that it is running smoothly.

At that point it's ready to set off.

Our technicians do everything wherever the vehicle has come to a stop, which means it never has to go to a garage, and when it has been noticed quickly, it's very rare for there to be long-term damage.

Calling from near Crossways Day Centre? Three things help us. The filler — which side of the car it's on. Room for our van alongside you, without the road being blocked. And whether anything has run since the fill-up. The location itself barely matters: on-street is where we work most, and we would far rather have a tight space than a motor someone has driven somewhere easier. Then it is a drain for the Peugeot 3008, a filter change where there is one worth changing, lines cleaned, fresh fuel put round the entire circuit. By now the worst of that is in the fuel lines and not your tank.

## A different matter: AdBlue in a diesel tank in Wade Hall

The fault is not the same, though the first instruction is — never crank it — if what went in was AdBlue rather than petrol.

Petrol does two things to diesel: weakens it, and strips out the lubrication the system depends on.

Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and build-up.

AdBlue removal in Wade Hall has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it's frequently the more significant of the two. We deal with both.

A motor you picked up two days ago gets driven further before anyone sees anything, which is the hire and courtesy issue in one sentence — and how far it went is what settles the quantity of petrol arriving at the injectors. Nothing sloppy about the mistake itself: a current diesel filler neck accepts the narrower petrol nozzle with almost no resistance, so strange locations see most of these. Phone us from wherever you are, close to Lowerhouse Community Centre or not, and we'll get to the BMW 5 Series.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost around Wade Hall

Truthfully, no single price fits on a page like this. This job varies. Here is what changes it:

- Whether the engine has been started or driven. This is the main one.

- The tank's capacity, set against how much of the wrong fuel went into it.

- The type of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where is it? And can a van reach it and work there sensibly?

Tell us what the car is, how much went in, and whether your engine has run. A firm answer comes back, not a range.

Car at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is fine for that.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Wade Hall drivers

## At a petrol station in Wade Hall, can you do a fuel drain there?

Much of what our engineers do takes place nowhere else. So yes.

Permission from the site is the condition. Given that, a forecourt like Morrisons is somewhere we're frequently, along with the rest of them locally — so name yours on the phone and you'll hear if working there's possible.

## Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

It hinges on the proportion rather than the litres, and much more on whether the motor has run.

What decides how much work is needed is if that mix has been drawn through the fuel system — because although five litres in a nearly empty tank is a distinct case from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?

Somewhere safe, then stop, then turn off and leave it off.

It's salvageable a lot more commonly than drivers fear, even though driving is what takes the problem from your tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

A drain then flush carried out correctly is not a change and does not void a manufacturer's warranty.

An argument over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it turned off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has thinned isn't replaced by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a separate issue. So no.

Petrol remains in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no break from it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There is no need to bring it to a main dealer, because we drain and clean the car wherever it is.

## You, and the vehicle, still together?

Never turn your engine on again.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, turn off, and no restarting the car later.

Cold and stationary, a motor is in the best place available — and motorists fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.
