# Walker: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

If you have not started the motor yet, do not. A fuel drain and nothing else is nearly always what a vehicle needs while the petrol is still inside the tank and the motor has not yet run, which is why it's the following few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel travels to your car wherever it has come to rest in Walker or the rest of Tyne and Wear, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a driveway, and drains and flushes it there.

Call us before everything else begins, and you'll see what comes from there.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try first

- As you drive, your pump and the injectors wear down. This is why you never crank it, and why you don't depend on it once it has started. The trick about petrol in a diesel in particular — the bit people get wrong — is that it pulls away normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor typically will not run at all, which stops the person and stops the damage with them. This one lets you drive on.

- Leave the ignition off also. Diesel has two tasks: it combusts, and before it burns it greases the high-pressure pump and its injectors. Petrol manages the first and not the second. Flicking your ignition on is usually enough to prime that system, which moves this petrol out of your tank and into exactly those components.

- Do not add diesel on top to weaken it. A diesel fuel system doesn't accept petrol by percentage the way that advice presumes, and topping up takes out nothing — it merely gives you a bigger tank of the same mix. The type makes no difference either: super unleaded is simply petrol.

- Remain where you are if you reasonably can. A motor that hasn't moved is the simplest one to handle, and our team would sooner get to an awkward spot than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Spinney Terrace, switch your hazards on and leave the vehicle there.

- A van arriving instead of circling depends on two things: a postcode starting NE6 4, and whatever is next to you with a name on it. Have both ready before you dial.

- Ring 0333 366 0103. Tell us what was put in, roughly how much, plus if the engine has started. These three facts shape your whole call-out.

## Removing petrol from the diesel on a forecourt

The job starts at the pump, usually. Quite often it ends there as well.

We work on petrol station forecourts routinely, with the site's agreement, and so if you're still at Asda that is generally where the drain happens.

Nowhere but the forecourt can the mistake be spotted with your engine still unrun.

Our engineers can still deal with it where it stands, even away from the forecourt. In a car park, on a driveway or in a lay-by, the car has been fired up and driven there, and that sucked fuel through your filter then into the high-pressure fuel pump, all the way from that tank. None of that is a disaster, but the flush then has to reach past the tank to your lines and the filter, and the few seconds between seeing the till receipt and reaching for the keys are what decide that.

Away from the pump, the next customer can get by — so yes, let the attendants help you move the vehicle. Well worth doing.

Four car lengths is not worth a start.

Simple, these ones, and the reason is the mileage: a mile at gentle throttle uses very little diesel. Petrol into a diesel Nissan Qashqai somewhere around Walker, a boot full of shopping, and you sat outside Heron Foods — phone us. Leaving that space isn't worth another start. That tank gets emptied where it sits, the fuel lines purged, new diesel in, and you head home.

## Coverage around Walker

Those same runs bring us to Low Walker, St Anthonys, Walkergate, Walkerville and Byker besides Walker, which is a residential suburb.

Our engineers do come. Those names above are merely the nearest neighbours, and a page exists for the majority of locations in Tyne and Wear, so an absence from the list isn't an absence from our coverage.

On the boundary, or somewhere a satnav misreads? Contact us to enquire instead of guessing.

That map shows the area this page includes.

Roadside, forecourt, drive, car park: all of that is territory our technicians work on, and none of that needs the vehicle to come to us.

Shift the vehicle out of the gateway and sort it out later — that is what someone will say, and it is wrong. Parked on the zig-zags by St Alban's Catholic Primary School, Walker, a misfuelled diesel Vauxhall Astra is a nuisance and nothing worse. Restarted three more times for good manners, it is no longer a tank problem but a fuel system one, as priming occurs with every start and more petrol goes through the filter towards the pump. Let everyone moan. Call us.

## Kerbside call-outs in Walker

The opportunity to pull in anywhere safe doesn't come to everybody.

Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of Middle Street since you worked it out after setting off — we take that call often enough that it's the ordinary kind.

Out of your car when it's not safe to sit in it, beside it when it is.

Don't fire it up to get to a better spot. It will go — a diesel on petrol normally obliges — and each mile of obliging drags that mix deeper into your fuel system.

We'll bring the van to an awkward place without any fuss, and for the car that's a lot better than driving on.

## So you've driven it? Petrol in a diesel over a couple of miles

Here is where the local A167(M) comes in — under 3 miles away from Walker.

Some way along, and onto it in the first place: a wrongly fuelled diesel will usually do both before anything seems wrong. What you get then is seldom a neat stop. Power ebbs away, your idle turns uneven, and there may be smoke.

Take the next exit that's sensible, stop there, and never start the car to move it.

Assume the worst of it on a long run. Anything near the under 3 miles to the nearest city, and the petrol has been through the filter, through the pump, through the fuel injectors. Tell us when you call. What our technicians bring differs.

## A little about Walker

Walker is a suburban area located inland in Tyne and Wear, England, with an elevation of 34 metres above sea level. Walker sits approximately 2.2 miles from Newcastle upon Tyne, in the north east of England. Walker is characterised by its semi-detached housing and is situated near other local areas such as Low Walker and Walkergate. Walker has a population of around 8830 residents.

## What happens when our engineers reach you around Walker

- We ask first, quote after. What got in? How much? Has the engine run? Those answers shape what the work actually is.

- Out flows the tainted mixture.

- Our engineers clean the lines and clean your filter, so what is left in the fuel system is not what caused the issue.

- Your system gets primed, on new diesel.

- Your engine is started and tested to be sure it runs correctly on new diesel.

The car is then ready for you to drive away.

There is no need to go to a garage at any stage, as the work is all done where the vehicle is, and when it is caught quickly, permanent damage is very uncommon.

Off the forecourt, receipt read, a couple of hundred yards, left near Walker Library. For a diesel Kia Sportage whose motor has turned, that's about the best version there is. Call us, and let it stand with the ignition alone. Short helps, truly — but a start is a start and a drive is a drive, and the fuel filter has had diluted fuel through it, and so has your pump. Which is why the lines get flushed and not just that tank cleared.

## Walker AdBlue removal is a separate matter

If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening instruction is the same — don't crank it — but the fault isn't.

Petrol does two things to diesel: thins it, and strips out the lubrication the fuel system depends on.

Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that causes rust and residue.

Our technicians deal with both, and AdBlue removal in Walker has its own page with the detail — including why it's often the more significant of the two.

Hire car or company car? Call them before you ring us — some contracts want the hire firm to authorise the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal faster than sorting it afterwards. Then ring us about the Audi Q5 close to YMCA, and do not worry that you can't say how full the tank was. Nearly no one can, in a motor they collected two days ago, and our technicians work it out on the spot. The reason our technicians ask is that petrol in a diesel does its harm as a share: the same few litres in a nearly empty tank is a far stronger mix than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it withstands igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger that mixture, the more it knocks, smokes and goes flat.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel drain in Walker

Our engineers cannot put one number on this page frankly, as the job isn't one job. What shifts it:

- Whether your engine has been started or driven. This is the key one.

- Wrong fuel in, against what your tank takes — that ratio.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever got in.

- Where is it? And can our van reach it and work there sensibly?

A straight answer instead of a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the amount, and if it has run.

If it's not urgent — your car is at home and going nowhere — is fine too.

What takes place next is the problem. The engine straight away sucks the petrol left waiting in the filter and the feed lines back round through your pump a second time, because draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it and put new diesel in, somebody sure of themselves will tell you — and that tip is half right, because do it to a diesel Volvo XC60 parked up, Gospel Hall say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound plausible. Call us instead. Our technicians flush the system and take your filter off where the vehicle has a working one, and that is the difference between the car being repaired and your car simply starting.

## Walker motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## At a petrol station around Walker, can you do a fuel drain there?

Much of what we do takes place nowhere else. So yes.

Regularly, provided the site consents: Shell, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where exactly you have stopped. Whether our engineers can work in that location is something we answer there and then.

## Is there a safe quantity of petrol in a diesel?

Litres aren't the yardstick. Ratio is, and far more than either, it counts whether anything has been run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: separate scenarios, definitely. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is whether the fuel system has had that blend drawn through it.

## Petrol in my diesel, and I have driven the car

Somewhere sensible, then stop, then turn off and leave it off.

Not restarting it is the single most valuable thing available to you now. Driving does move the problem out of that tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains salvageable much more often than drivers expect.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

No. Carried out correctly, draining and rinsing is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

Another reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing more likely to cause an argument with one.

## Two-stroke oil in your tank, and then home?

No. Two-stroke oil is an old workaround for a distinct issue and it does not put back what petrol has diluted.

After that? Still petrol in that tank, and a pump that has to live with the stuff.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

You don't need one. Your car is drained and flushed wherever it is, with no need to take it to a main dealer.

## Still with the vehicle?

Turned off is how the car stays.

If you have already driven the vehicle, pull in somewhere sensible, turn it off and leave it off.

A still, cold car is the best place to be in, and this is recoverable from much more regularly than drivers assume.

Throughout Tyne and Wear and in Walker: call-out fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
