# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Walpole? Don't Start It

If you have not fired up your engine yet, don't. A drain and nothing else is nearly always what a motor needs while the fuel is still sitting in that tank and the motor has not turned over, which is why it is the next few minutes that matter, not how much was put in. Petrol in Diesel goes to your car wherever it has stopped in Walpole or the rest of Somerset, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a private drive, and drains and cleans it there.

Phone before all else starts, so you will hear what follows after that.

## What now? Petrol in a diesel, in turn

- Do not crank it — and never believe it if it does start. That is the bit most people get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol motor filled with diesel normally just cannot run, and so the motorist stops and the damage ends with them. A diesel given petrol typically starts, idles and drives away just fine for a couple of miles. It isn't all right. It is eating into the fuel system while you drive.

- Leave the car's ignition be as well. Diesel has two jobs: it burns, and before it combusts it protects your injection pump and those injectors. Petrol does the first but not the second. Switching the ignition on is frequently sufficient to prime your system, which moves that petrol out of the tank and into precisely those components.

- Do not water down it. Diesel poured on top removes nothing, so all you get is more of what was already there, since percentage isn't how a diesel fuel system tolerates petrol. Super unleaded? Simply petrol. The grade makes no difference.

- Wait where you are if you reasonably can. A vehicle that has never moved is the simplest one to deal with, and we would sooner come to an odd location than have it started. If you are parked on the verge on Bristol Road, put those hazards on then keep it there.

- Know where you are before ringing. A postcode that starts TA6 4, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise our van circles instead of showing up.

- Ring 0333 366 0103. Say what got in, about how many litres, and also if the car has run. Those three answers settle the full job.

Don't run it home. The drive in has already put a real load of petrol-thinned diesel through the high-pressure pump of that Volkswagen Golf, and the journey back would more or less double it for no gain at all. Call us from the platform if that is handier. Our engineers don't need you standing over the car at Bridgwater while our engineers get on, and we would much rather speak to you tonight than find out on Monday.

## Can petrol be pumped out of a diesel at the forecourt?

Most of the work begins at the pump, meaning a fair chunk of it ends up finished on site.

If you are still on the forecourt at BP, that is normally where the drain happens — our technicians work on station forecourts all the time, with the station's consent.

The forecourt is the one spot it can be spotted before the motor has fired.

Fuel drawn out of the tank and through your filter, all the way to the high-pressure fuel pump, is what occurs when your engine is switched on and your car is driven to where it is now: the car park, the driveway or the lay-by, anywhere other than the forecourt. So the flush takes in your filter and the lines together with that tank. That is still not a disaster, and we put it right where the vehicle is. What determines it is whether the ignition was reached for in the seconds after the till receipt was checked.

The attendants will generally help you wheel the car clear of the pump so the next motorist can get by. That is worth doing.

Moving it four lengths doesn't warrant starting it.

## Walpole plus the areas near it

These same rounds bring us to Down End, Dunball, Pawlett, Puriton and Pawlett Hill besides Walpole, which is a rural hamlet.

There are pages for most towns in Somerset, and the ones listed above are simply the immediate neighbours — so yours being absent from this list says nothing whatsoever about if our engineers come.

Contact us and check rather than presuming, especially if you are on the boundary or somewhere your satnav struggles with.

The map shows the patch this page covers.

Your car never needs to travel to us. We work throughout all of it — kerbside, forecourts, driveways, car parks.

Every restart primes your lines and pulls more petrol through your filter then into your pump. So a wrongly fuelled diesel Skoda Octavia on the zig-zags by Puriton Primary School is a hassle, whereas the same car started three more times to be helpful is a fuel system rather than a tank. Someone will urge you to shift the vehicle out of that gateway and fix it later. Don't. Leave it, let them moan, then give us a call.

## Stranded by the kerbside anywhere around Walpole?

A chance to pull over somewhere safe does not fall to everyone.

Hazards flashing at a lay-by somewhere, or pulled onto the verge of Pear Tree Lane as you noticed after setting off — our technicians take that call regularly enough that it is the ordinary kind.

Remain with the motor when it's safe to be in it, yet clear of the car if it isn't.

Never start up your motor to limp the car somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling that mix further into the fuel system.

Pressing on does your car far more harm than a technician coming out to a difficult place, and that is no problem for us.

Here is what a job in the car park by The Admirals Table generally looks like. Our engineers reach the vehicle, ask what got in, roughly how much, and whether the engine has run since — these three replies settle most of the work. Then the contaminated mix comes out of that tank, the fuel lines get rinsed, and the fuel filter comes off where your Nissan Qashqai has a replaceable one. Clean diesel goes in and the system is bled. Then our engineers fire it up, check it runs properly, and you set off.

## A couple of miles on petrol in a diesel: what next?

Here is where your M5 comes in — under a mile away from Walpole.

A misfuelled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything seems wrong, and the symptoms when they arrive are usually lost power, a rough idle and some smoke rather than a tidy stop.

Don't start it to reposition. Get off at the first sensible exit then turn off.

Long drive? Anything approaching the under 25 miles to the nearest city and you should presume the lot — filter, pump, injectors, all of that arrived at by the contamination. Say that on the call, since it alters what goes in our van.

## Where's Walpole?

Walpole is a small coastal hamlet in Somerset, situated near the mouth of the River Parrett and close to the villages of Down End and Pawlett. Walpole lies at a low elevation of around 8 metres, with detached housing being the predominant type of accommodation in the area. Walpole is located near the city of Wells, which is approximately 15 miles away, and is part of the wider South West region of England.

## What happens when our technicians reach you around Walpole

- Our engineers find out what got in, how much, and whether the engine has run. The responses shape the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting.

- That tank is cleared of everything.

- Our technicians flush the fuel lines and clean your filter, and so what's left in the fuel system isn't what caused the issue.

- Priming follows, once new diesel is in.

- Our technicians turn it on and make sure it runs properly on new diesel.

From there, you are ready to drive away.

There's no need to go to a garage at any point, as the work is all done where your car is, and when it's spotted soon, long-term damage is very rare.

Why so direct about leaving the keys alone? Since your pump is upstream of the fuel injectors, and a worn-out one sends whatever it gives off downstream with your fuel. Ring us. Leave the Dacia Duster close to Caput Montis.

## AdBlue in the diesel tank instead, around Walpole?

The problem is not the same, though the opening rule is — don't crank it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Thinned diesel, and no lubrication left for the system that depends on it. That is petrol.

Urea in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings rust and residue.

Frequently the more significant of the two, AdBlue — and the details sits on its own Walpole page. Both are ours to deal with.

## What a petrol-in-diesel drain will cost around Walpole

Our engineers can't put one price on this page truthfully, because the job isn't one job. What changes it:

- Whether the engine has been started or driven. This is the key one.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, against how much your tank can hold.

- AdBlue or unleaded, whichever was put in.

- Where the car is, and if a technician can safely reach and work on it.

Tell us what the car is, how much went in, and if your engine has run. A clear answer comes back, not a range.

Not pressing, with the car at home and going nowhere? Then is fine.

A few streets, then it stopped. Throttle limp, idle ragged, and the diesel Mercedes E-Class is parked up by Saint John the Baptist. The motor is not giving up — that sluggishness is fuel that will not build pressure. There's no light on the dash for it, so motors like yours generally get driven again before anyone picks up the phone. Please don't. Off, then ring us.

## Petrol in diesel: everyday queries around Walpole

## I'm on a forecourt around Walpole. Can you drain the car here?

Yes, and it's where a good part of this work happens.

Routinely, provided the site agrees: Shell, plus every other forecourt nearby. Say on the phone where precisely you have stopped. Whether our technicians can work in that spot is something our technicians answer there and then.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

It rests on the proportion rather than the litres, and a lot more on whether your motor has run.

Five litres in a nearly empty tank is a different case from five in a full one — but either way, the thing that determines how much work is needed is whether that mix has been sucked through the fuel system.

## I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Switch off somewhere sensible, then keep it that way after you stop.

Driving is what shifts the trouble from the tank into the pump and injectors — but it is salvageable much more often than drivers assume, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart the car.

## Is a fuel drain going to void my warranty?

It is not a change, and so a drain and flush carried out correctly doesn't invalidate a manufacturer's warranty.

Running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a disagreement with one, which is another reason to leave the car turned off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has weakened isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old remedy for a separate issue. So no.

Petrol remains in that tank afterwards, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no break from it.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever the vehicle is, our engineers drain and clean it there, so a trip to the main dealer doesn't come into it.

## Waiting next to it?

Leave the car shut off.

Driven it already? Then somewhere safe, stop, switch off, and no restarting the vehicle after that.

This is recoverable from far more often than motorists assume, and a stationary, cold motor is the best position to be in.

Across Somerset and around Walpole: mobile fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the kerbside.
