# Warren: Put Petrol in a Diesel Car?

Do not fire up the motor. If the petrol is still in the tank and your engine has not yet turned over, a drain is nearly always all it needs — and that gets decided in the next few minutes, not by how much got in. Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrongly fuelled cars where they stand, all over Warren and the remainder of Cheshire, on the forecourt, by the roadside or on a driveway.

Call us so our technicians will explain what happens from here before you try any more.

## What to do next about petrol in a diesel

- Never crank it — and don't trust it if it starts. This is the part most people have wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. A petrol engine filled with diesel usually just won't run, so the motorist stops and the wear stops with them. A diesel given petrol typically starts, idles and pulls away perfectly well for a few miles. It's not okay. It is wearing out that fuel system as you drive.

- Turning your ignition on commonly primes your system, and priming is what moves petrol out of your tank then into your pump and injectors. Those are the parts diesel keeps lubricated on its way through, before it combusts. Petrol does the burning and none of the oiling. Leave the ignition off.

- Topping up removes nothing. It hands you a fuller tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system does not cope with petrol by percentage in the way that guidance suggests — so do not pour diesel on top to dilute it. Type is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Sit tight if it's sensible to. Hazards on, motor off, leave it. Wherever you have stopped — the verge on Church Lane, anywhere — an odd location for us trumps a started engine, and nothing is simpler for us to deal with than a car that never shifted.

- Our van turning up instead of circling turns on two things: a postcode beginning SK11 9, and whatever is closest to you with a name on it. Keep both prepared before you ring.

- Three answers shape the entire call-out: the stuff you poured in, the ballpark quantity involved, plus whether anything has been going since. Our line is 0333 366 0103.

Petrol in a diesel Volkswagen Passat, parked at Macclesfield since this morning? The wait has cost you nothing — fuel in a tank is idle. It was the run in that pushed thinned diesel through your pump. Phone before you collect it.

## Removing petrol from a diesel at a forecourt

Forecourts are where the job usually starts, and where a good chunk of that ends.

If you are still on the forecourt at Shell, that is usually where the drain takes place — we work on station forecourts all the time, with the site's permission.

Before the motor has fired — a forecourt is the one location this ends up halted.

The few seconds between checking the receipt and going for the key settle how much requires rinsing. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and driven to get there, so fuel was sucked from the tank, through your filter and into the high-pressure pump. That means the fuel lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as your tank. It's not a disaster, and we can still deal with it where the vehicle stands.

Clear of the pump, the next customer can get through — so yes, let the staff help you wheel the car. Well worth it.

Shifting it four spaces doesn't warrant firing the motor.

Petrol in your Skoda Octavia, and it takes diesel? Shopping in your boot, you outside Co-Op, somewhere around Warren? Then phone, and leave your engine out of that — not even to get out of that bay. Someone comes to you. Tank drained, fuel lines cleaned, clean diesel in, and home you go. Easy throttle over a mile uses very little, and so these are often the easy jobs.

## Coverage near Warren

These same runs carry us to Gawsworth, Moss Houses, Danes Moss, Lower Pexhill and Highlane besides Warren, which is a residential suburb.

Not on this list? It tells you nothing. The places above are simply the nearest few, and nearly all towns in Cheshire have a page of their own elsewhere on this site.

Assuming is the mistake to skip, above all on a boundary or anywhere the satnav fails. Ring us and enquire.

The patch the page covers appears on the map.

The lot is territory we cover: a kerbside, a forecourt, a private drive, a car park. You never move your car anywhere.

## Broken down on the roadside in Warren

Not everybody finds a suitable place to pull over.

If you noticed after setting off and finished up on the verge of Dark Lane, or in a lay-by somewhere with your hazards flashing, that's a common call for us and not an unusual one.

Fine where you are? Stay with it. Not fine? Climb out and away from it.

Don't fire up the engine to limp the vehicle somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will frequently oblige, and every mile it obliges for is dragging the blend further into your fuel system.

We will send the van to an inconvenient spot without any bother, and for the car that is much better than pressing on.

Simple job, this one — until somebody takes it home. A diesel Nissan Qashqai sitting by Harrington Arms with petrol in the tank loses nothing by standing there overnight, and so park the vehicle and call us once it is light. Expect a query about the trip there, though. Short and cold is precisely where petrol struggles to burn, and what won't burn can get past the piston rings then into the engine oil.

## Petrol in a diesel, but your car has gone

This is where your M6 counts, under 10 miles away from Warren.

A misfilled diesel will usually take you onto it and some distance along before anything feels wrong, while the symptoms when they arrive are normally lost power, a rough idle and some smoke rather than a neat stop.

Pull off at the next sensible junction, switch off, and do not start the car to reposition.

On a longer run — anything near the under 15 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the fuel filter, the pump and the fuel injectors, and mention it when you phone. It changes what our engineers bring.

Here is the full process. Diesel needs enough body to seal the fine clearances it goes through, and petrol takes that away. That is it. Which accounts for the usual Gawsworth Park call — a diesel Vauxhall Astra, out there without a murmur and back down on power, uneven at idle, maybe a bit of smoke. Injection systems work hydraulically as well as chemically, and so your fuel has to hold pressure and not just burn; weakened, it bleeds past those tolerances instead of building, and delivery comes poorer, later, less even than the engine was engineered around. Not a failing motor, though. Fuel that has stopped behaving like diesel. Put that right and it stops.

## Where is Warren?

Warren is a small suburban area in Cheshire, situated inland at an elevation of around 150 metres. Warren lies near the villages of Gawsworth and Moss Houses, and is close to the Danes Moss area. Warren is characterized by its predominantly detached housing stock, reflecting its residential nature. Warren is located approximately 14.5 miles from Stoke-on-Trent and 147 miles from London.

## What follows when our technicians arrive with you around Warren

- Our technicians ask first, quote after. What went in? How much? Has your engine run? Those replies shape what the work really is.

- Our engineers clear your tank of all the contaminated mixture.

- Lines flushed, filter cleaned. Whatever is left after that isn't the thing that caused the trouble.

- The system gets primed, on new diesel.

- After it's turned on, we check it runs properly on new diesel.

From there, you are ready to pull away.

Permanent damage is very uncommon when it has been spotted quickly, and since all of it is done where your car is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Warren is a distinct matter

If what was put in was AdBlue rather than petrol, the opening rule is unchanged — never crank it — yet the issue is not.

Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and strips out the protection the system relies on.

Rust and deposits are what a diesel tank ends up with instead, because AdBlue is urea dissolved in water.

Both are ours. There's a separate Warren page for AdBlue removal, with the detail on it — including the reasons it frequently turns out to be the worse of the two.

A throttle gone soft, white smoke, a lumpy idle, knocking: that is a misfuelled diesel Ford Fiesta telling you what's wrong. Never start the vehicle to find a better location — turn off where you have stopped, close to Gawsworth Village Hall or anywhere else.

## How much is a petrol-in-diesel drain around Warren?

What changes the price is listed below, since the job isn't one job and our engineers can't frankly put a single figure on this page.

- Whether your motor has been run or driven. This is the big one.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, judged against how much the tank holds.

- Whether it was petrol or AdBlue.

- Where your vehicle is, and whether a van can safely get to and work on it.

The vehicle, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight rather than as a range.

Motor at home, going nowhere, nothing urgent about it — is ideal for that.

## Petrol in diesel questions from Warren motorists

## At a petrol station around Warren, can you do a fuel drain there?

Yes, and it's where a good portion of this work gets done.

Our engineers attend another forecourt nearby and the other forecourts locally all the time, with the site's consent — tell us which one you are at when you call and we will tell you whether our engineers can work there.

## How much petrol is too much for a diesel?

Litres are not the measure. Proportion is, and a lot more than either, it matters if anything has been run.

An almost empty tank with five litres in it, against a full one with the same five: distinct situations, certainly. Either way, the work required comes down to one thing, which is if the system has had that mixture drawn through it.

## Already driven it with petrol in your diesel? What then?

Stop safely. Off. Nothing after that.

It's salvageable much more regularly than drivers fear, even though driving is what shifts the issue from that tank into your pump and injectors — and the single most valuable thing you can do now is not restart it.

## My warranty — does a fuel drain void it?

No. Carried out correctly, clearing and purging is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is untouched by it.

A dispute over a warranty is likelier to come from running a diesel on petrol — so leave it switched off.

## Can I just add two-stroke oil and drive home?

What petrol has weakened is not restored by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a different issue. So no.

Petrol remains in that tank later on, whatever else goes in, and the pump gets no respite from it.

## Does petrol in a diesel have to go to a main dealer?

Not at all. We drain and flush your car wherever it is, so there is no need to bring it to a dealership.

## Still with the car?

That engine stays off.

Already driven it? Then pull over somewhere safe, switch off, and let the vehicle remain that way.

Cold and stationary, a motor is in the best position available — and motorists fear this far more than the recovery rate warrants.

At the roadside, on the forecourt or at home — on-site fuel draining around Warren and throughout Cheshire.
