# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Watford?

Petrol in Diesel drains and flushes wrong-fuelled vehicles where they are, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive, throughout Watford and the rest of Hertfordshire. The very first thing to do is not to start the motor. While the motor has not turned over and the fuel is still in your tank, a fuel drain is nearly always all it takes, and the following few minutes decide that, not how much was put in.

Phone before all else starts, and you'll learn what follows next.

## Petrol in a diesel: what to try now

- As you drive, your pump and the injectors wear down. That is why you never crank it, and why you never believe it once it has started. The catch about petrol in a diesel especially — the part drivers get wrong — is that it drives off normally for the first mile or two. Diesel in a petrol motor generally cannot run at all, which stops the driver and stops the damage with them. This one lets you carry on.

- Diesel ignites, and before it burns it greases — your injection pump, the injectors. Petrol does only the burning. So leave the ignition off as well: switching it on is usually enough to prime the system, and priming draws petrol from your tank into just those components.

- Topping up takes out nothing. It gives you a fuller tank of the same mixture, because a diesel fuel system does not cope with petrol by percentage the way that guidance assumes — so do not pour diesel on top to weaken it. Octane is beside the point too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Wait where you are if you reasonably can. A vehicle that hasn't shifted is the quickest one to sort out, and we would sooner drive to a difficult place than have it started. If you're parked on the verge on New Street, switch your hazards on and leave the vehicle there.

- Check where you are before ringing. A postcode starting WD17 2, and the name of whatever is closest to you. Otherwise the technician circles instead of turning up.

- Ring 0333 366 0103. Expect three queries — what was put in, approximately how much, plus if the motor has been run. Your replies decide all that follows.

The high-pressure pump spent that morning commute running on a fuel that had lost a lot of the protection it is built around. Diesel protects that pump, and the fuel injectors with it, before any of your fuel burns; petrol does the burning and none of the protecting. So picture a diesel Volkswagen Golf, topped up at quarter past eight, taken in to work, and parked standing outside Watford High Street until you realise somewhere around eleven. Three hours of sitting have changed nothing about it. The few miles before that did plenty, which is why the question we put to you is about distance instead of hours. Ring us. Leave it just where it is.

## Clearing petrol from a diesel on a forecourt

The job kicks off at a forecourt, mostly. Frequently the job ends on site as well.

If you are still at the forecourt at Tesco, that is typically where the drain happens — our technicians work on garage forecourts all the time, with the site's consent.

Before your engine has fired — a garage is the single location this gets stopped.

The few seconds between seeing your receipt and going for your key settle how much needs cleaning. Anywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a drive, a lay-by — the vehicle was fired up and moved to get there, so fuel was pulled from that tank, through the filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means the lines and the fuel filter need cleaning as well as the tank. It's not a calamity, and our technicians can still put it right where the vehicle stands.

Attendants will usually chip in pushing it away from the pump, which lets the next motorist get by. Welcome the offer.

Rolling the car four spaces does not merit firing the engine.

Tell us this much and our engineers can work with it: a diesel Renault Clio, a couple of litres of unleaded in it, two miles or so, switched off at M&S Simply Food now. Time gone by isn't the thing we need. Fuel drawn by your pump is.

## Places we cover near Watford

Watford is a riverside town, and so we go out to it and to the villages by it on the usual rounds: West Watford, The Rookery, Oxhey, Holywell and Watford Heath.

There are dedicated pages for most locations across Hertfordshire, and the ones named above are just the nearest neighbours — so yours being left off this list tells you nothing whatsoever about if our engineers come.

Near the boundary, or anywhere a satnav can't find? Contact us and ask instead of presuming.

Check this map for the area covered on this page.

Our technicians work roadside, at forecourts, on driveways and at car parks over all of that, and the car does not need to travel to us.

## Stopped on the roadside anywhere around Watford?

The chance to stop somewhere safe doesn't come to everybody.

Hazards on in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge of Church Street because you worked it out after setting off — we take that call regularly enough that it's the normal kind.

Clear of the vehicle if it isn't safe to sit in it, beside it when it is.

It will often oblige. A diesel running on petrol limps along very willingly, and that's the trouble: restart the vehicle to reach somewhere better and the mixture goes further into the fuel system with every mile covered.

However inconvenient the place, it's no problem for us to get to it, and that is much better for the car than driving on.

## Petrol in a diesel, and the car has travelled

Here is where the M1 comes in, under 3 miles out of Watford.

A loss of power, a rough idle, smoke: those are the signs when they appear, rather than a neat stop — and a wrongly fuelled diesel will frequently get you onto it and some way along before anything feels wrong at all.

Take the first exit that is safe, pull up there, and don't restart it to move it.

It changes what our technicians bring, so say so when you call: on a longer drive — anything close to the under 10 miles to the nearest city — take it the contamination has been through your filter, your pump and your injectors.

## A little about Watford

Watford is a town in Hertfordshire, situated on the banks of the River Colne, with a relatively low elevation of 76 metres. Watford lies approximately 15 miles northwest of central London, making it a significant commuter hub. Watford has a diverse range of residential areas, including West Watford and The Rookery, with a high proportion of flat dwellings. Watford is also close to the nearby city of St Albans, which is about 7 miles away.

## What follows when we reach you around Watford

- The responses change the work, which is why we ask before quoting: what went in, how much of it, and if the engine has run.

- Your tank gets emptied of everything.

- Our engineers clean the lines and clean your filter, so what's left in the fuel system isn't what created the issue.

- We put clean diesel in and bleed your system.

- After it's turned on, our engineers confirm it runs properly on new diesel.

That has the car ready to set off.

Long-term damage is very rare when it has been noticed quickly, and as all of this is done where the car is, it never needs to be taken to a workshop.

Phoning from near St Mary's? Three things help us. The filler — which side of your car it is on. Room for our van beside you, without the road being blocked. And if anything has run since the fill-up. The location itself barely matters: on-street is where we work most, and we'd much rather have a cramped bay than a car a person has driven somewhere simpler. Then it is a drain for the Vauxhall Astra, a filter change where there is one worth changing, lines flushed, clean fuel put round the entire circuit. By now the worst of it is in the lines and not the tank.

## AdBlue in a diesel tank in Watford is a distinct problem

AdBlue instead of petrol? Then the opening step is unchanged — the motor stays off — while the fault underneath it is a different one altogether.

Petrol weakens your diesel and strips the lubrication the fuel system relies on.

Urea dissolved in water, AdBlue, and in a diesel tank that brings corrosion and build-up.

We handle both, and AdBlue removal in Watford has its own page with the full story — including why it is often the more serious of the two.

Hire car or company car? Phone them before you call us — some agreements want the hire firm to sign off the work, and sorting that out first is a great deal quicker than sorting it after that. Then ring us about the Mercedes A-Class near Marks & Spencer, and do not worry that you cannot say how full that tank was. Nearly no one can, in a motor they collected two days ago, and our technicians work it out on the spot. The reason our technicians ask is that petrol in a diesel does its harm as a proportion: the same few litres in a nearly empty tank is a far stronger mixture than in a full one. Petrol is rated on how well it resists igniting under pressure, which is the opposite of what a diesel needs — so the stronger the blend, the more it knocks, smokes and goes flat.

## Budgeting for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain around Watford

We can't put one figure on this page frankly, as this job is not one job. What moves it:

- Started? Driven? Either answer matters more than anything else on this list.

- Wrong fuel in, against what your tank holds — that ratio.

- AdBlue or petrol, whichever went in.

- Where is it? And can a van get to it and work there sensibly?

The car, the amount, whether it has run — give us those and the answer comes back straight and not as a range.

Vehicle at home, going nowhere, nothing time-critical about it — is ideal for that.

What takes place next is the trouble. Your engine at once draws the petrol still resting in the filter and the feed lines back round through your pump a second time, since draining a tank does nothing about fuel that has already left it. Drain it then put new diesel in, somebody certain will tell you — and that advice is half right, as do it to a diesel Peugeot 208 parked up, Cineworld say, and the thing starts, which is what makes it sound plausible. Ring us instead. Our engineers flush the circuit and take your filter off where the vehicle has a working one, and that's the difference between the car being put right and your car merely starting.

## Petrol in diesel queries from Watford motorists

## I'm on a forecourt in Watford. Can you drain the car here?

A good share of this work takes place there, so yes.

Tell us which one you are at when you ring and we'll tell you if our engineers can work there. With the site's agreement our technicians visit BP and the other forecourts nearby routinely.

## How much petrol in a diesel is too much?

Whether the engine has run matters far more, though the ratio counts too, instead of the litres.

What decides how much work is required is whether that mixture has been sucked through the fuel system — since though five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate matter from five in a full one, either way that's the question.

## I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. What now?

Pull over somewhere sensible, switch off, and leave it off.

Driving is what takes the trouble from that tank into your pump and injectors — but it is recoverable much more regularly than motorists expect, and the single most helpful thing you can do now isn't restart it.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out correctly, draining and purging is no modification at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

Another good reason to leave it switched off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause a dispute with one.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

What petrol has weakened isn't put back by two-stroke oil, which is an old fix for a different fault. So no.

Petrol remains in that tank after that, whatever else goes in, and your pump gets no break from it.

## Main dealers and petrol in a diesel

There is no need to bring it to a franchised dealer, as our engineers drain and flush the vehicle wherever it is.

## Waiting next to it?

Never switch your engine on again.

If you have already driven it, pull in somewhere sensible, switch it off and keep it off.

Cold, still, going nowhere: that is the best place to be in. Motorists fear this far more than they need to.

Throughout Hertfordshire and in Watford: mobile fuel draining, at home or on the forecourt or at the roadside.
