# Put Petrol in a Diesel Car in Waverledge?

Do not fire up the motor. While the fuel is still in that tank and the motor has not run, a fuel drain is nearly always all it requires — and that is settled in the next few minutes, not by how much went in. Petrol in Diesel drains and cleans misfuelled vehicles where they stand, across Waverledge and the remainder of Lancashire, on the forecourt, at the roadside or on a drive.

We can explain what the next step will be. Ring us — that happens ahead of all else.

## The first five steps: petrol in a diesel

- Give a petrol motor diesel and it will normally not run at all, so the driver stops there and so does the wear. Give a diesel petrol and the car starts, it idles, it drives off — all right for a few miles. Most people have that reversed, which is the part they get wrong about petrol in a diesel specifically. So don't fire it up. And having started, don't rely on it: the fuel system is grinding as you drive.

- Two jobs, diesel: it burns, and on the way through it keeps that high-pressure pump and injectors protected. Petrol only manages the one. Which is why your ignition stays off too — turn it on and you frequently prime the system, and that is petrol leaving the tank for just those parts.

- Topping up gets rid of nothing. It gives you a fuller tank of the same blend, because a diesel fuel system won't cope with petrol by percentage in the way that advice suggests — so don't put diesel on top to dilute it. Grade is immaterial too: super unleaded is petrol.

- Wait where you are if you sensibly can. A car that has not shifted is the quickest one to handle, and we'd much rather drive to a difficult place than have it started. If you're pulled up on the verge on Dryden Grove, switch your hazards on then keep the vehicle there.

- A van arriving instead of circling depends on two things: a postcode that starts BB6 7, and whatever is closest to you with a name on it. Get both prepared before you ring.

- Phone 0333 366 0103. Say what was put in, roughly how many litres, and if the car has run. These three facts settle the full call-out.

## Can petrol be taken out of a diesel on a forecourt?

The work starts at a pump, usually. Often enough it ends there as well.

The drain usually gets done right there. Still on the forecourt at Morrisons? Given the site's permission, that's a place our technicians work, and routinely.

Before the engine has run — the forecourt is the single setting it gets stopped.

The few seconds between reading the till receipt and going for your key determine how much needs rinsing. Everywhere other than a forecourt — a car park, a driveway, a lay-by — the vehicle was switched on and moved to get there, so fuel was sucked from your tank, through the filter and into your high-pressure pump. That means your lines and the filter need flushing as well as the tank. It is not a catastrophe, and our engineers can still sort it out where the car is.

Away from the pump, the next motorist can get through — so yes, let the staff help you move it. Worth doing.

Starting it just for four vehicle lengths? Don't.

Diesel Renault Megane. Some litres of unleaded. Done a couple of miles. Shut off now, outside Morrisons. That is the phone call we want, since the point underneath it's about quantity through the pump instead of hours on the clock.

## Service around Waverledge

Tottleworth, Great Harwood, Edge End, Hindle Fold, Lower Fold — each of those on our trips that carry us across to Waverledge as well, a residential suburb.

There are dedicated pages for the majority of locations across Lancashire, and the ones listed above are just the nearest neighbours — so yours being missing from the list means nothing about whether we come.

Close to a boundary, or anywhere a satnav gets wrong? Phone and ask rather than presuming.

The map shows the ground the page spans.

We work at the roadside, on forecourts, on driveways and in car parks over all of it, and your car does not need to move to us.

Hazards on. Engine off. Ring us. It is twenty to nine outside Great Harwood Primary School, you're late, and the receipt shows unleaded — and though three miles in the Skoda Octavia sounds like nothing, fuel is supplied to demand, and a hurried dash needs plenty of it.

## Kerbside stops around Waverledge

Some drivers have no sensible place to pull over whatsoever.

Hazards going in a lay-by somewhere, or stopped on the verge beside Springfield Road as you noticed after setting off — our engineers take that call regularly enough that it's the normal kind.

Sit by the motor when it's wise to sit there, but clear of the car if it isn't.

Don't start up the engine to nurse it somewhere safer — a diesel running on petrol will often oblige, and every mile it obliges for is pulling the blend further into the fuel system.

A van driving to a difficult place is no trouble for us, and it's much better for the car than pressing on.

Your BMW 3 Series remains where it is in the car park outside Lomax Arms for the whole job, which normally goes like this. First our engineers ask what got in, approximately how much, and whether your engine has run since, given that most of the work depends on those answers. The tank is emptied of the contaminated blend, the lines are rinsed, and the filter comes off if it's a replaceable one. With clean diesel in and the fuel system bled, your car is started and tested, and once it is running correctly you drive away.

## Already driven it? Petrol in a diesel after a couple of miles

under 3 miles out of Waverledge, the local M65 is what matters now.

It will frequently take you onto it, and some way along, before you spot a thing. Then it is smoke, an uneven idle and power falling away — not a clean stop. Misfilled diesels seldom give you one of those.

Pull off at the next sensible exit, turn off, and don't restart it to move it.

On a longer drive — anything approaching the under 15 miles to the closest city — assume the petrol has been through the filter, your pump and your injectors, and tell us when you ring. It changes what we bring.

## Waverledge itself

Waverledge is a suburban area in Lancashire, situated on the riverside with a mix of terraced housing and other residential properties. Waverledge sits at an elevation of 122 metres, approximately 11.8 miles from Preston and 183.9 miles from London. Waverledge is close to nearby places such as Tottleworth, Great Harwood, and Edge End, and has a population of around 4927 residents.

## What happens when our technicians get to you around Waverledge

- The responses alter the work, which is why our engineers ask before quoting: what was put in, how much of that, and whether your motor has run.

- Out flows the tainted mixture.

- Lines purged, filter cleared. Whatever is left afterwards isn't the thing that created the trouble.

- New diesel goes in, and then your system gets bled.

- Our engineers start the car and confirm it runs correctly on new diesel.

Your car is then ready for you to drive away.

Our engineers do all of it wherever the car has come to a stop, which means it never has to go to a garage, and if it has been noticed quickly, it is very rare for there to be lasting damage.

## A separate problem: AdBlue in a diesel tank around Waverledge

The problem isn't the same, though the opening instruction is — never crank it — if what went in was AdBlue instead of petrol.

Petrol does two things to diesel: dilutes it, and takes away the lubrication your fuel system depends on.

AdBlue? Urea dissolved in water. Pour that in with your diesel and you get rust instead, plus deposits.

AdBlue removal around Waverledge has a page of its own with the full story on it, including why it is usually the more significant of the two. Our engineers cover both.

Authorisation first, where there is a hire firm or a company behind your car — some contracts require it, and settling that beforehand saves a great deal of time later. After that, ring us about your diesel Ford Focus close to Towngate Pentecostal. You will not know how full your tank was. Scarcely anybody does, two days into a car, and it gets worked out on site anyway. Our technicians ask as the harm petrol does in a diesel is proportional: a couple of litres in a nearly empty tank make a much stronger mixture than the same few in a full one, and since petrol is engineered to resist igniting under pressure, which is precisely what a diesel relies on, the stronger it gets the more the motor rattles and smokes and flattens off.

## Paying for a petrol-in-diesel fuel drain in Waverledge

What changes the figure is laid out below, since the job isn't one job and we cannot truthfully put a single price on this page.

- This is the key one: whether your engine has been run, or driven.

- How much of the wrong fuel got in, measured against how much the tank can hold.

- The sort of fluid in the tank, unleaded or AdBlue.

- Where the vehicle is, and whether our van can safely reach and work on it.

A clear answer rather than a range is what you get for telling us three things: the car, the amount, and if it has run.

For the vehicle at home that is going nowhere and is not time-critical, works too.

A person sure of themselves will tell you to drain it and put fresh diesel in. Half right, that. Try it on a diesel Mercedes A-Class near Town_Hall and the engine will start — which is exactly why it sounds like sense. Here is the trouble: there's petrol left in your filter and the feed lines, and the first thing your engine does is draw it back through your pump again. Emptying a tank achieves nothing about fuel that already left your tank. Ring us. The circuit gets flushed, your filter comes off where there is one worth removing, and that's what separates a fixed vehicle from one that only starts.

## Waverledge motorists ask us these about petrol in diesel

## Fuel drains on a Waverledge petrol station forecourt

Yes, and it is where a fair part of this work gets done.

We work at Ridings Auto Services and the other forecourts locally all the time, with the site's agreement — tell us which one you're at when you ring and we'll tell you if our technicians can work there.

## A couple of litres of petrol in a diesel — too much?

It rests on the ratio instead of the litres, and far more on whether your motor has run.

What settles how much work is required is whether that blend has been pulled through your fuel system — since although five litres in an almost empty tank is a separate case from five in a full one, either way that is the question.

## I drove it after putting petrol in my diesel. Now what?

Stop somewhere safe, switch off, and leave the vehicle off.

Not restarting it is the single most useful thing available to you now. Driving does move the trouble out of your tank then into the pump and injectors, yes, and it remains recoverable a lot more often than motorists expect.

## Fuel drains and manufacturer warranties

No. Carried out properly, emptying and purging is no alteration at all, and the warranty from your manufacturer is unaffected by it.

Another good reason to leave it turned off: running a diesel on petrol is the thing likelier to cause an argument with one.

## Could I put some two-stroke in and just drive?

No. It belongs to a different issue from a different era, and petrol has diluted something no oil of that kind replaces.

That tank still has petrol in it later on, and the pump still has to put up with it.

## Do I need a main dealer for petrol in a diesel?

Wherever the car is, our technicians drain and clean it there, so a drive to the main dealer does not come into it.

## Is your car still with you?

Keep the engine turned off.

If you have already driven the car, stop somewhere sensible, switch it off then leave it off.

Cold, still, going nowhere: that's the best position to be in. People fear this far more than they need to.
